Description Dan Evans 2008-08-25 12:56:51 UTC
We have a series of recent reports that are all alike: The server attempts to start but fails and the system emits an audible *beep*.

None of these customer have the same security suites installed. One has Norton, another has Windows Live Onecare, another McAfee.

It's unclear what the source of these crashes are. Logfiles are attached.

Ticket examples:

 * 080804-002239 (opened 8/4)
 * 080823-001496 (opened 8/25)
 * 080823-000084 (opened 8/25)

NB: Please don't zip up attachments to the bugs, best to just save them as txt files so they can be reviewed in the browser.

Thanks!

Comment 8 Michael Herger 2008-08-27 00:58:35 UTC
Two issues I've seen so far:

- user can't write to the prefs folder

- MySQL not able to start (some info from the Windows event viewer might be helpful)

Inability to write to the prefs folder might indicate that this user does not have the permission to write to our folder at all. This in turn could be the reason why MySQL is failing: it can't write out its data files.

Are these users running SC in user or service mode?
Can you ask them to try to create a file/folder in the prefs folder (as indicated in the log file)?
Did they recently install some Windows update, and it did work before (Windows tends to reset permissions to system defaults during updates)?
And would a re-install fix the issue?

Last but not least: is there a way I can access those tickets? Maybe some of the above questions would be answered in there already.

I was able to assist a customer past this issue today.

Right Now ticket # 080425-000768

Customer has been having issues with SqueezeCenter starting on his Vista machine. I was able to get him up and running on SC 7.1 prod build today.

Here were my steps:

1. Uninstall SC

2. Delete SqueezeCenter folders from Program Files and Program Data

3. Run Windows Disk Clean Up Utility. Removed all temp files.

4. Reintstalled SC 7.1 prod build.

I did experience one issue after SC installed. After SC finished installing, It got to a running state. When the setup wizard tried to come up, it came up with a "Page cannot be displayed" error, and had a comment about the server being busy. The customer said the address in the browser was, http://127.0.0.1:9000. I had him enter, http://localhost:9000, and that worked.

I checked the properties for the Web UI shortcut in C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter, and the URL listed there was, http://localhost:9000.

One additional comment. The customer did not mention anything about hearing a beep(s).
Comment 16 Dan Evans 2008-08-28 14:45:26 UTC
I was hoping maybe we had a solution here, but had another customer try this is it did not fix the trouble... (customer): "tried twice but no luck, still beeps at the end [and fails]"
Comment 17 pete goonis 2008-08-28 15:15:04 UTC
vista ultimate 32,had norton 360 but uninstalled it, now using avast and windows firewall. SS 6.5 ran fine bought a new Duet installed SC 7.1 and I get this bug 9284 (w/audible beep). I've tried everything more than once with no luck.
Comment 18 Michael Herger 2008-08-28 23:55:16 UTC
Dan - I've closed down this bug report. Please don't upload ticket dumps. They contain a lot of data which do not belong here (phone numbers, mail addresses, client names etc.), but eg. not the logs, which are much more important.

Please note that bugzilla can be searched by google and spam harvester. We don't want to expose our clients to them.
Comment 19 Dan Evans 2008-08-29 09:08:54 UTC
Michael-- the customer info was my mistake. i forgot the ticket dumps have all that. However, they can easily be redacted if we need them. Were they useful information?
Comment 20 Dan Evans 2008-09-02 14:07:09 UTC
Would it be best to start a new bug for this issue? One that could be public again and go from there?

Michael, what additional information do you need to tackle this?

James, what additional info would you like gathered?
Comment 21 James Richardson 2008-09-02 15:11:09 UTC
Yes, open a new bug report, referencing all the Ticket Numbers.

Please get the following information from customers, when possible
----------
OS version information:
Home / Pro / Server / Enterprise
x86 / x64 / ia64
Service Pack 0 / 1

Browser Version information:
IE 6 / 7 / 8
or Other

AntiVirus & Firewall information:
McAfee 6.x
Windows Firewall
ETC.

OS User Type
Standard / Administrator

SC Install Directory
Standard / Modified (get exact file path)

SqueezeBox Hardware
Which equipment they have, including Firmware Versions

What version of SC did they have previously installed

Did the customer run the install with Standard or Administrator privilege?

After installing everything, and experiencing the issue, have the customer send you (or attach to the bug) the any log files they have.

HAZZAAA...I was finally able to reproduce this error ONE time on my XP-Home system...turns out SQL may be the root cause...see attached log files.
The beeping was from the motherboard speaker (not the audio sub-system) in my case.

My system continued to beep until the scanner was done with my files. Since I only had 9 files in my library, it only beeped for about 4 min, then stopped and SC booted properly.

What steps should be taken next?
