Comment 1 Dan Evans 2008-09-03 13:25:56 UTC
Here is the original bug summary...

We have a series of recent reports that are all alike: The server attempts to
start but fails and the system emits an audible *beep*.

None of these customer have the same security suites installed. One has
Norton, another has Windows Live Onecare, another McAfee.

It's unclear what the source of these crashes are. Logfiles are attached.

Ticket examples:

 * 080804-002239 (opened 8/4)
 * 080823-001496 (opened 8/25)

Everyone having this problem looks like MYSQL is the common error.

Please try the following:

Stop SC
Browse to c:\programdata\squeezecenter\cache
Delete the mysql folder
Delete the mysql.startup file
copy the mysql-error-log.txt to another location (desktop)
Start SC
Watch c:\programdata\squeezecenter\cache <folder> for the mysql-error-log.txt
file to be recreated. We'll need this file and the one copied to the destop

If the error happens again, attach the error-log.txt file(s) to this bug report
---------------
Doing the above will cause SC to re-scan your music folder, if you have a large
collection then this could take quite awhile. To speed up SC Start, remove or
change your music library (c:\users\<name>\music) temporarily.
Comment 11 James Richardson 2008-09-03 15:42:39 UTC
It may also be good to know which Web Browser everyone is using.

I testing with IE 7.0.6001.18000, Vista Ultimate x32 Build 6001: SP1

Upgraded fine from 7.1.0 to 7.2.0
Comment 12 Michael Herger 2008-09-04 00:19:50 UTC
Also there seems to be a permissions issue:

[08-08-25 14:25:20.6826] Slim::Utils::Prefs::__ANON__ (269) Error: can't create new preferences directory at Profiles\All Users\Application Data\SqueezeCenter\prefs
[08-08-25 14:25:20.6898] Slim::Utils::Prefs::init (284) Error: unable to write to preferences directory Profiles\All Users\Application Data\SqueezeCenter\prefs

SC can't write to its folder. That's very likely why MySQL is failing too. Did the users do a Windows update before SC started the trouble? Would re-installing from scratch work? Can the user create a sub-folder in the above path?
Comment 13 Dan Evans 2008-09-04 10:39:50 UTC
Michael, wait... on Vista the path to these resources is different. What's listed in these errors is the XP path. The Vista path is:

C:\ProgramData\SqueezeCenter\Cache
C:\ProgramData\SqueezeCenter\prefs

Is SqueezeCenter attempting erroneously to write the XP path, which will not exist?

Comment 14 Michael Herger 2008-09-04 14:08:26 UTC
This _might_ be a problem. But Vista uses some kind of folder virtualization, where what you see is not always what you have. These two paths might be one and the same folder (or not - I can't say). Eg. German uses localized paths in Explorer etc., but on the disk it's the same c:\ProgramData\ path as in English. We would have to verify the various cases.
Comment 15 leo 2008-09-09 09:10:45 UTC
no beep just stops when startup option changed to: start squeezecenter automatically when computer starts
Comment 16 Dan Evans 2008-09-12 18:17:54 UTC
New example of this crash, but unclear if it's the same or not. (support ticket# 080506-001979.)

We've gathered a log from him, attached. Michael reviewed and suspected a port conflict. I have had him run "netstat -a" from command prompt and there are no other apps using our ports.

He's tried running as an app, and as a service. Both fail. However, he recently wrote and said if he runs the server manually it works.

note from customer in ticket# 080506-001979...

"I have created a new user with super administrator rights and after running SC with no problems, I logged off and ran my usual user (which has administrator rights). I was able to start and run SC without any problems. I tried to restart my computer and ran my usual user and still no problems - except that I am not able to scan my library (I cannot scan it with super administrator rights either). I have also tried to run scanner.exe, but still without any results."

...

Later, he wrote...

"I can run SC if I use the super administrator account, but if I use my normal account (administrator rights) I get the error message you find below."

I have attached his log of that error.

Please everybody answer the following questions:

- What exact Windows version are you using (incl. service pack)?
- Did you do a Windows update before the SC trouble started?
- Did SC ever work?
- Can you create a sub-folder in the path reported in the logs? (usually c:\programdata\squeezecenter or similar)
- Would re-installing SC from scratch fix the issue?

ServerCrashLog

HAZZAAA...I was finally able to reproduce this error ONE time on my XP-Home
system...turns out SQL may be the root cause...see attached log files.
The beeping was from the motherboard speaker (not the audio sub-system) in my
case.

My system continued to beep until the scanner was done with my files. Since I
only had 9 files in my library, it only beeped for about 4 min, then stopped
and SC booted properly.

What steps should be taken next?

Additional, interesting information from one of these customers. I learned he has Windows OneCare running and requested he configure it to allow our ports. He wrote back:

"Did everything but no change ... Something has changed in the responses (it predates the changes to live one care) when I start SC a box comes up and says "cannot write to:" with no address specified. When I OK the box, the beep comes and I am back to square 1."

This dialog box is new!
Comment 27 Dan Evans 2008-09-30 15:06:52 UTC
Michael--

From one customer:

* What exact Windows version are you using (incl. service pack)? Vista Ultimate version 6 - sp 1
* Did you do a Windows update before the SC trouble started? Cannot remember
* Did SC ever work? yes
* Can you create a sub-folder in the path reported in the logs? (usually C:\Programdata\SqueezeCenter ) yes
Comment 28 Chris Owens 2008-10-06 09:36:07 UTC
We don't have enough info yet to fix this for 7.2.1

Comment 29 Chris Owens 2008-10-06 17:17:44 UTC
So we're running as the user these days, right? Can the user write to that directory?
Comment 30 Dan Evans 2008-10-06 17:25:30 UTC
Yes, according to one customer. (see comment #27)
Comment 31 Michael Herger 2008-10-07 02:41:06 UTC
> So we're running as the user these days, right? Can the user write to that
> directory?

The installer takes care of the permissions. That's why I've been asking whether a new install would fix it, or whether a Windows update (which sometimes fiddles with permissions) had been run (see my comment #12)
Comment 32 Michael Herger 2008-10-17 00:11:03 UTC
Dan - while this is considered a major bug and targeted for 7.3, I don't see the bug. We have some symptoms, but no clear idea what's wrong. Do you have any new news from these customers?
Comment 33 Dan Evans 2008-10-22 10:46:06 UTC
Michael-- Other than it still does not work for them, no I have no new news. I've encouraged those customers to write here. Only 2 are continuing to respond at this stage.

With the pile of logs we've gathered, what evidence do we have? Even if it doesn't indicate the cause, what do the logs suggest, if anything?

What more can we do, and what more will we need from customers to diagnose?

Thanks for all your efforts to crack this one!
Comment 34 Michael Herger 2008-10-28 00:11:24 UTC
I'm sorry James, there's still not a lot I can see. There's 080506-001979 which has an issue with MySQL failing. But other than that I don't see any pattern.
Comment 35 Bill Yeast 2008-10-28 09:07:12 UTC
Hi,
I'm the guy that had the MySQL errors in the dump I sent and the Squeezebox
v3 owner that can't use it to play our MP3 library until this is fixed!

I downloaded 7.2.1 today and tried it - same results (beep and it is always starting never running). I navigated to "C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server\squeezecenter.exe" and ran it as Administrator and it popped open a DOS window with this text:

Hope it helps!

So where are you guys - I'm in Mill Valley and would bring my XPS to
you if you are down Mtn View way or thereabouts. Yes, gas is
expensive and time is always too short, but I'm sure you'd somehow
take care of me if it would help you get this "thing" fixed.

Let me know

Hello Guys,

We have discussed this issue in our Support meeting today, and Dan wanted me to provide some information.

I had a customer running Vista Home sp1 that had this same exact issue (beep from the motherboard when trying to start SC)

I had the customer send me his log, and it stopped with

"[08-10-02 22:09:49.2902] main::init (300) SqueezeCenter OS Specific init...
[08-10-02 22:09:49.2908] main::init (343) SqueezeCenter settings effective user and group if requested...
[08-10-02 22:09:49.2911] main::init (353) SqueezeCenter binary search path init...
[08-10-02 22:09:49.2919] main::init (356) SqueezeCenter strings init...
[08-10-02 22:09:49.3096] Slim::Utils::Strings::loadStrings (111) Retrieving string data from string cache: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SqueezeCenter\Cache\strings.bin
[08-10-02 22:09:49.3169] main::init (359) SqueezeCenter MySQL init... "

After looking at this log I tried 2 things:
I ran netstat, and found that SqueezeCenter was sending requests to MySqL (port 9092), but 9092 was not listening

I then added and exception to the firewall (built in) to allow transmissions over this port (did not help)

I then had him turn off User Access Control, and it worked. When he turned it back on, it stopped working again.

I hope this information is useful.

Thanks,

LaRon

I had him turn off User Access Control, and it Started

I have another customer suffering from this issue. Tried the suggestion of turning off the UAC but that did not work in this case.

(from customer "leomal")

I now run the whole shebang from a laptop that networks to the music drive on the desktop, because despite all attempts, slimserver cannot seem to work on the desktop that used to run it just fine.

Vista ultimate all bells and whistles on, and up to date, one care on and up to date.

Malware checked, manual clean of set up etc.. No dice

Funnily enough my laptop also runs vista (home premium I think) one care etc and it seems to have not a problem.

Notes from research on one customer's system:

Several old versions of SC had been previously installed.

McAfee antivirus was installed, although disabling it and the windows firewall did not fix the problem.

The root cause appears to be that mysqld isn't running; SC run from the commandline comes back and says it can't connect to mysql

Mysql does not appear in the task manager.

Netstat shows a connection initiated to localhost:9092 but in a status of SYN_SENT not ESTABLISHED, indicating probably that SC tried to connect to mysql but mysql never ACKed.

Note the following may not be important, but I am including it for completeness:

Trying to run C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread\mysqld.exe resulted in an error that it could not find C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server\Bin\share\english\errmsg.sys

I noticed there was an errmsg.sys in \SqueezeCenter\server\MySQL\ as well as some other files. I copied all the files in that directory into \squeezecenter\server\bin\share\english and was rewarded with an error about not being able to find \squeezecenter\server\bin\data. I created that directory. After that, trying to run mysqld.exe appeared to run, but instantly returned to the command prompt and no mysqld was listed in the task manager.

Further updates to come.

those last two issues are also visible on a working system, so must NOT be important.

Yet another event log, this time in .txt format

A friend of mine who is a mysql person notes:

Where are you keeping your mysql data files? Look in there and see if you have a "mysql/" directory. Inside it, you should see three files: host.MYD, host.MYI and host.frm.

It sounds like your "mysql" database (a system DB that mysql uses for stuff) is corrupt. Or perhaps not there at all, but it doesn't say the DB is missing, just a table within it.

Where are you keeping your mysql data files? Look in there and see if you have a "mysql/" directory. Inside it, you should see three files: host.MYD, host.MYI and host.frm. If those files are there, it's
likely that it's a permissions issue. If they are not there, they should be and the easiest way to fix that is probably to move everything out of the way and restart mysql so it recreates that stuff.

Then you can copy your databases back in to that data directory, assuming they are all myisam tables. If you have innodb you gotta copy those files too.

My customer reported that SC started to work on his Vista machine after he had fixed some problems with SP1.

He has been struggling with SP1 for a while, but this morning he was able to install SP1 on his Vista machine properly, and SC worked after that without any problem.
Comment 44 Osama Zaidan 2008-12-15 12:33:22 UTC
My customer reported the problem had occurred again even with XP-SP1 installed.
He had tried 7.3 but the problem continues.
Here is his latest log file

Osama - did you accidentally change this bug's summary? I doubt "mp3 tunes" does describe the issue here any better...

read working directory from Windows

There seems to be an issue on Vista where SC would not be able to write to its data folder. Could you please all do the following quick test:

- download getappdatafolder.exe attached to this bug
- run the executable from within a command window
- email me the result (michael@slimdevices.com)

you should see two to three lines: Windows version, and two application folders, once read from the registry, once using the Windows API.

Thanks everyone!

QA - could you please run this test on w2k, xp, vista and 2008 server (without the GUI - if already available somewhere)?
Comment 47 Michael Herger 2008-12-18 10:22:28 UTC
Forget the above test :-).

Please give the latest build a try. It already features a fix for what I wanted to prove with the above testfile:

Got the following PM (leomal?):

It works! Great job thank you!
It loaded without problems. It started like it used to, no beeps no errors.
The backup PC has been retired.
Comment 49 James Richardson 2008-12-19 09:20:05 UTC
This appears to be addressed in
SqueezeCenter 7.3.1 r24367
Everyone having this issue, please test and verify with this version (or later) of SC.
Comment 50 Bill Yeast 2008-12-19 09:29:11 UTC
I am DELIGHTED to report that SqueezeCenter-7.3.1-24372 fixed the problem for me and both Vista Ultimate SP1 PC's that were previously never able to get beyond starting SqueezeCenter.

WISHLIST: A better touch screen interface - will gladly participate in any such development or beta testing of a good touch screen GUI candidate for SqueezeCenter!

Happy Holidays,
Bill (byeast@pacbell.net)
