Description Stefan Kinell 2007-11-13 12:28:19 UTC
I have a some compilation-ablums in my music collections. E.g. "Abba-the tribute" and "good morning vietnam soundtrack". these albums typicaly have the same album name but different aritsts. In iTunes they show up under "compilations" (or what else english word is used, I'm using Swedish language but I thought you did not know what I meant if I wrote "samlingar" :-D )

In the settings tab My Music of Squeezcenter I have checked the following:

Group compilation albums together
List albums by all artists for that album

it must be a bug that they still show up under one line each, right?

I found a similar bug at https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=847 (I think) But that was projected to be fixed in 6.2.1. I'm running SqueezeCenter-version: 7.0 - 14312 - Debian - SV - iso-8859-1

files must be tagged as 'compilation' in the metadata, plus all songs must reside in the same folder to be considered as "on the same album'
Comment 2 Stefan Kinell 2007-11-14 02:02:11 UTC
The files are taged as compilation in the metadata, but resides under different folders. So that is the reason for them showing up as different albums.

But as an end user, I would still consider this a bug. iTunes has sorted my songs this way and Squeezcenter is supposed to be compatible with my iTunes song library. So I would suggest changed specification on that funcionality in order to cope with songs residing in different folders.

Unfortunately, having songs in albums groups in the same folder is a slimserver/squeezecenter requirement. The logic for sorting and grouping is deliberately different from that of iTunes. Those requireing a direct match to iTunes features and limitations should use iTunes.

Hi KDF,
I can not make it out if you are SlimDevices official or not but I guess not from the email-address you have. If you are, I would say it was a bit strange answer...

1. Where does it say it is a "slimserver/squeezecenter requirement" to have them in the same folder?

2. On http://www.slimdevices.com/marketing/Squeezebox-v3-Datasheet.pdf it says:
"Works with iTunes". of course it does not say to what extent it works, but why blame iTunes and say they have done it wrong and it has deliberately been made in a different way on the squeezebox? I do not mean to say that iTunes is perfect, but thinking of how many that use iTunes to organize their music, one would guess that it would be wise to rather try to make things work togeather with that product than deliberately not make it to work.

Now please understand my comments the "right way", the only reason for me submitting bugs like this is 1. to make sure that the product I bought four days ago works as good as I want to, and 2. If I see this as an issue, I bet there are lot's of others having the same issues and are dissapointed by that.

1. It is in answers to forum questions and other bug reports. I'm sorry that you feel it is strange, but it is true. It is also information that is offered to the relatively few users who run into this case due to a different organisation style.

2. iTunes does not work with Linux. That is obvious. Several years ago, a third party individual provided a patch to support basic use with a linux-based slimserver. This is the nature of open source. You get the benefit of many options, but not all offer 100% coverage for all cases. Please feel free to open a discussion in the forum if you wish.

Please try the suggestions given previously and let us know if that solved the grouping problem for you. thanks.
In future, I suggest posting to the forum first, or contacting support (at) slimdevices (dot) com for help. Bugzilla should be used as a later course of action, not the first.

try having a look at this for some info:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?BeginnersGuideToiTunes

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?VariousArtistsLogic

I may be incorrect after all for the album tracks in the same folder for all cases, but I am surprised that iTunes ripped them to different folders if it was selected as a compilation to start with (some testing on this issue is mentioned in bug 5725). Make sure you do a full rescan any time to play with these settings.

Regardless, it seems this issue is fully covered by the already open reports innvolving compilations:
bug 4353
bug 4754
bug 5764
bug 4361

As such, this should be resolved as a dupe of one of them to that limited resources can be focussed where they are needed. Please look through the above reports, and search for "compilation" to find others. Feel free to add your comments to any that fit your case.

I'll leave this to cris to mark accordingly. thanks.
