Bugzilla – Bug 4353
Unexpected browse results for various artists / compilations
Last modified: 2008-12-18 11:12:53 UTC
SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 10169 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252 I want 'List all compilation Albums under each artist' to operate so have that selected under SS behaviour. If I then select 'List all Albums by all albums for that Artists' and then search: Artists/Various Artists and select 'Sort by Album' the result is exactly what I want/would expect. If however I sort by 'Artist, Album' it returns every artist and album in my collection. Now if I still have 'List all compilation Albums under each artist' but select 'List by Band' and then search: Artists/Various Artists and select 'Sort by Album' the result is every artist in my collection. If however I sort by 'Artist, Album' it returns exactly what I want/would expect. Now this is where it gets weird for me - if under either of the above circumstances I now select the 'Various Artists' link displayed to the left of the 'Sort' box. I get returned exactly what I want / expect with either sort by Album (I get a return of all my compilation albums) or sort by 'Artist, Album' (I get a return of all the artist in those compilation albums).
So, I used the web GUI, in Server Settings -> Behavior, and set 'List compilation albums under each artist' and 'List albums by all artists for that album' However, when you say you are searching, do you mean you are using the Slimserver web GUI or the player GUI? If you are using the web GUI are you using "search" or "advanced search"?

Chris, I am using the web GUI. When I refer to searching I am actually just using the 'Browse' by category function on the homepage of the web GUI rather than using either search facility. Therefore, I browse 'Artists' and select 'Various Artists' within that listing. I hope that makes sense. Cheers
Hm I'm totally not seeing this bug. What kind of music do you have in your collection? MP3? Flac? iTunes? What software do you use for ripping and tagging? Thanks for any info!

Thanks for any info! Hi Chris, sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this one. I'm not sure i'm going to be able to add much that might help you. I have a large collection dating back over quite some time so the collection has been ripped using a variety software although recently I did a big clean up operation of all the Tag data using Mp3tag. The collection comprises both mp3 files and WMA (including an increasing number of WMA lossless). I have noticed that WMA tags are not handled well, could be this causing problems? For example: "I created an mp3 file and a wma file each was tagged with only the basic 'Artist', 'Track' & 'Album' info. I then moved them to my monitored music folder and rescanned with SS. The two new files were correctly identified by SS and could be searched for by either 'Artist', 'Track' or 'Album'. I then added 'various artists' using the 'Album Artist' tag to each file and did a clear - rescan. The result was that SS seemed to ignore the 'album artist' tag for the mp3 file and it could still be found using either 'Artist', 'Album' or 'Track. However, the WMA file had dissappeared from the Artist listing - it couldn't be located by either the original artist details or within various artists details. It could be found via the 'album' tag where it is now is shown as 1 album with 1 song by 2 artists - also the artist could be found using the search music function." I'm not sure if this kind of behaviour could be responsible for the overall unexpected behaviiour but I notice others are also experiencing this problem (see last post here): http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28229&page=4 Sorry I can't help more. I'd like to check out if this problem has been resolved in later nightly builds but I haven't been experiencing positive results with the nightlies and would prefer to wait for the official version of 6.5.1 before upgrading again. Cheers
I haven't forgotten about you, David. Is it possible I could get you to upload one of the affected WMA files and attach it to this bug? That would help me make sure I'm actually recreating the bug correctly.
Ping David
