Description Ben Gladstone 2005-02-24 00:12:21 UTC
The 'Browse Albums' page shows a line for each song in an album - so if an album
has 10 songs you get 10 copies of the album name. This happens only for albums
which are a collection of songs by different artists; the 'part of a
compilation' tag is not checked.
Comment 1 KDF 2005-02-24 00:55:07 UTC
I assume from the mention of the 'part of a compilation' option that you are
using itunes. it seems to me that this is actually proper behaviour given the
retentive nature required to alleviate the 'greatest hits problem'. does
cheking that option collect the artists into a single album properly?
Comment 2 Ben Gladstone 2005-02-24 01:28:51 UTC
yes, i'm using itunes. i checked the compilation tag for all songs in one of
these albums, waited for the rescan, but the album still shows up multiple times
Comment 3 Bart 2005-02-24 01:35:31 UTC
I see the same behaviour - I am not using itunes.
My directory structure is set up with one directory for each artist, so tracks
from albums with multiple artists will end up in multiple directories. I then
get multiple copies of the album name in "Browse Albums" (and artwork
in "Browse Artwork")
Would it not be possible to assume that albums of the same name are the same
album (possibly excluding a few obvious ones like "Best
of...", "Live", "Greatest Hits", etc.?)
Comment 4 KDF 2005-02-24 02:29:03 UTC
oh dan....I'm betting this will interest you.
Comment 5 Vidur Apparao 2005-02-24 09:07:35 UTC
Ben, is your directory structure similar to Bart's? Are the tracks of your
multi-artist albums in different directories?
Comment 6 Ben Gladstone 2005-02-24 10:07:58 UTC
no, the example i'm looking at has 13 songs all in the directory
G:\tunes\Compilations\100% Dynamite!_ Ska, Soul, Rocksteady, &\

some of the lines for this album in the album list show
"1 album with 1 song by 1 artist."
but don't have a song listed. other lines in the album list have 2 songs under
them. there are 13 lines for this album in the album list. line 1 has 1 song,
line 5 has 4, line 7 has 2, line 11 has 4, line 13 has 2; the other lines have
no songs

there is a pattern: the songs are distributed in reverse alphabetical order -
line 1 has song by Willie ... line 13 by Cedric and Brentford

does that offer any clues?

Ben, a couple of questions:
1) Are the names of the duplicate albums all identical in terms of casing and
spacing?
2) Is this the only album for which this happens? More specifically, does it
happen for multi-artist albums without punctuation marks in the album name?

another duplicate albums fix attempt

Tried the earlier suggestion of maintaining a whitelist of album titles for
which we also need a contributor match. We also search on the sortable title
(with canonical casing) rather than the title itself.
Comment 9 Ben Gladstone 2005-02-24 23:53:58 UTC
1) Are the names of the duplicate albums all identical in terms of casing and
spacing?
-- yes

2) Is this the only album for which this happens?
-- no, it seems to happen for each album that has multiple artists

More specifically, does it
happen for multi-artist albums without punctuation marks in the album name?
-- yes, eg "Angels in the Architecture"

Ben / Bart, can you try the latest nightly, and let me know if it fixes the
problems? Vidur's patch was checked in - there's a server preference that goes
along with it for specifiying "Greatest Hits" albums.
Comment 11 Ben Gladstone 2005-02-28 02:52:43 UTC
that works for me now, thanks

There are 536 bugs in the database with targets of '---' that were fixed prior to new year 2006. I am setting them to targets of 6.2.1 to keep them from showing up in my queries.
