Description Richard Titmuss 2008-04-25 04:17:40 UTC
Hi Richard,

So I have been looking at this and my comments are as follows:

1. How will we deal with scaling the drop down box when text is longer than the example?
-mainly how will the selection boxes and below text shift?
2. Will it confuse for the user to have the same colored selection box and drop down together?
3. Does it make sense to introduce another color to support using the drop down?

My suggestion for this release would be to go with the original proposal you suggested [see ui_error_3.png]. Long term, I would suggest moving to something like attached, ui_error_popup.png.

We might want to separate out some screens to have a standard [non-wallpaper] background in future releases. Some examples of this would be here as well as connecting to a network and some settings. It would give us a lot more control over the layout, color, etc.

Not everyone is used to this technology and may need to read the problem and options a few time to work out what to do next (thinking about my dad here!). What's the problem with layout in my first proposal, once it's dressed up a little?

This is used when something goes wrong, and I'd like to extend this to be used during setup too (for example when your wireless password is wrong). In the general case there may be up to three menu choices below the error text. Previously we put the error text in the help bubble at the bottom of the screen, but people did not always look at it. Dean's suggestion was that the error text should be in the title drop down, as used in Now Playing. What do you think?

Ben to prototype error screen in TestApplet. Richard and Ben to iterate on agreed format, and then Ben to add to code where needed.
Comment 8 Ben Klaas 2008-07-01 09:16:19 UTC
not enough time to do this for 7.1
Comment 9 Richard Titmuss 2008-07-24 04:23:33 UTC
punting to 7.3.
Comment 10 Ben Klaas 2008-11-02 12:39:31 UTC
this isn't going to be fixed by 7.3. retarget for 7.3.1
Comment 11 James Richardson 2008-12-19 08:01:35 UTC
Changing target to next release
Comment 12 Ben Klaas 2009-01-05 10:13:11 UTC
with only these exceptions, my bug list is being retargetted for 8.0

for 7.3.2 (very soon):

for 7.3.3 (later, but before 8.0):

https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7502 Add setup mode to set Static IPs (even if DHCP is present)

https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6334 add applet for network diagnostics (currently assigned to Tom)

Comment 13 Blackketter Dean 2009-07-22 08:39:09 UTC
Moving to the product SqueezePlay because this bug appears to apply to any player based on that application code. Feel free to move it back if it's specific to the single original product.
Comment 14 Ben Klaas 2009-07-22 11:29:44 UTC
Is there a plan for this? This bug is extremely old, and I'm inclined to just close it and address error states elsewhere. I'm highly doubtful that whatever we specified in April 2008 still would stand today...
Comment 15 Weldon Matt 2009-07-22 16:27:08 UTC
Agreed with Ben, this is too outdated to spend time on now.
