Description Blackketter Dean 2007-11-02 20:24:08 UTC
I suggest that the firmware update screen should show the current and potential firmware versions, possibly in the text popup below. Thoughts?

fantastic idea. especially for some who build custom and don't have the capacity for remembering just which version is where. it is also a nice way to be sure that the whole process is making sense.

I would also find this useful, but I'm not sure our average user will? Also we'll only know what version is being installed after the jive.bin file is being downloaded, it won't always be possible to report this up front.

I'd like to punt on this now.

How about this? As you scroll through the choices the popup text changes:

To update the software on this
remote to version <versionno>
choose <prompt>. Updating may
take a few minutes.

If the version isn't known (it should be) then omit "to version <versionno>". In the current software the popup text doesn't match the menu text.

The version is not known before updating. The update is a url from one of:

1. file url to mmc/sd card
2. a url to the firmware on SC
3. a url to the firmware on SN

To know the version then the jive firmware zip file would need to be downloaded in advance from each location to generate the help text. This would be too slow and unpractical. This information is not given to the user when upgrading on Squeezebox, so I really don't think it's required. Only a nice to have for developer types.

Heh, I gotta stop filing the same bug over and over, but every time I hear somebody complain that they keep getting new firmware but it doesn't seem to install, I re-file.

We need to create a mechanism that tells Jive the version before the new version is downloaded.

So, here are updated strings...

When the version on the device is the same as the one offered, the text should say:

"The software for this remote is up to date. If you'd like to reinstall version xxxx, choose Begin Update."

When it's not up to date, it should use the string:

"Updated software is available for this remote. It may take a few minutes to update to version xxxx."

If there's a firmware image on the SD card, the item for the SD card should read:

"Install xxxx from SD card"

Reset priority

Fixed in jive 7.0.1 r2111-r2114. A bonus feature is that you can have multiple jive_7.X_rXYZ.bin images on an SD card and choose which you would like to install, this may be useful for QA.
