Description Dan Sully 2006-05-02 15:23:17 UTC
This bug is meant to be a placeholder to collect URLs that are MMS only.

A MMS only URL generally has one or more of the following symptoms:

* Plays fine in Windows Media Player, but not on a SB2/SB3

* Plays ok in SoftSqueeze on a Windows machine, but not on a SB2/SB3

* If the user disables built-in WMA decoding (SlimServer 6.2.2 or higher), on Windows, the stream plays ok.

----

* You can generally verify a stream is MMS only in a number of ways:

* telnet <IP or hostname> 80 - will give a connection refused.

* telnet <IP or hostname> 80 - connects. Type in:
   GET /path HTTP/1.0

Returns a 404 or some other type of error.

Example:

* Given: mms://210.118.193.140/wzrc

$ telnet 210.118.193.140 80

Trying 210.118.193.140...
Connected to 210.118.193.140.
Escape character is '^]'.
GET /wzrc HTTP/1.0

Connection closed by foreign host.

Indicates the server on the remote end doesn't know what to do.

Here is the list of URLs so far:

mms://210.118.193.140/wzrc
mms://69.43.137.40/jazztrax060319h1.wma
mms://ms2.capitalinteractive.co.uk/beat_stream

Here is another mms that isn't working

SB2 version 6.3 nightly build june 09,2006 firmware version 54

mms://69.43.137.40/jazztrax060423h1.wma

this works in windows media player
Comment 8 Marvin Brown 2006-06-11 10:54:18 UTC
mms://wm-live.abacast.com/jazztrax

Works with the windows media windows media(built-in)
file type is checked

mms://69.43.137.40/jazztrax060416h1.wma
does not work if with the windows media windows media(built-in) file type is checked

mms://69.43.137.40/jazztrax060416h1.wma
works if the windows media flac wmadec/flac filetype is checked.

The problem I have with the above is that it is a royal pain attempting to remember what works with what when I want to listen to either source.

I can't have both files types checked simultanously, if I do then neither one works.

Dear Support Team,

I have problem using SB2 opening mms URL, an example is like the following:

Comment 12 Marvin Brown 2006-06-21 13:09:42 UTC
Can a developer answer the following question;

Has the issue that relates to comments 7 and 8 been addressed/fixed in any nightly release yet?
If not, is there an eta on when someone will be looking into it.

This is not new functionality, it used to work in 6.1.

Thank you
Comment 13 Dan Sully 2006-06-21 13:11:48 UTC
Marvin - you can leave the built-in decoding unchecked.
Comment 14 Marvin Brown 2006-06-21 18:45:30 UTC
I downloaded the lastes nightly.
Did what you said do and both streams are working again!! :-)
Comment 15 Ross Levine 2006-07-21 16:04:16 UTC
(TMID 6689) Trying to get this stream to play from Squeezebox:

http://www1.881903.com/apps/crmain/livebroadcast/cr2_oversea.asx

Can only be played back via SlimServer installed on a PC, with (built-in) Windows Media file type UNCHECKED.

We have a customer very interested in getting this station to work from Squeeze Network, which it currently does not.
Comment 17 Alexander Vollkopf 2006-08-12 06:21:20 UTC
Hello, i just would like to ask if there are some news or a timeline regarding this bug.
I've got still problems with the link from comment #5. I've contacted the radiostation, but they have a provider for their stream and see no chance to change something.

Regards,

Alexander Vollkopf

Comment 21 KDF 2006-11-22 11:50:22 UTC
more detail on that log, from another thread:

"The log of the error was done with WMA built-in disabled so I think
checking for 404 and then trying transcoding won't work.

Also adding ":1755" at the end of the address to force SS to use port
1755 and not 80 which was OK as a workaround in 6.2, doesn't work in
6.5 with SS unable to understand the HTTP response."
Comment 22 Andy Grundman 2006-12-06 14:01:29 UTC
Related to the recent discussion, I've fixed bug 4522 where all MMS URLs were failing even with wmadec transcoding enabled.

however on the latest 6.5.1 snapshots, the stream it references mms://wjtlmedia.rnltech.com/wjtllive64 WILL play if directly entered into slimserver.

I was the one who got in contact with Anoop complaining about these streams not working:
http://www.decibel.nl/live/wma128.asx
http://www.xtra.fm/live/brava.asx
http://www.megastadfm.nl/live.htm
http://wildfm.nl/wildfm.asx

I want these stations being played from the Squeezebox3 while using the squeezenetwork.
I read there were solution while using the SlimServer, but still nothing on how to play these streams via Squeezenetwork?
Can a Slim Devices engineer comment on this please?
What is the actual status? Is there a solution yet?
Comment 29 Chris Owens 2007-03-05 13:14:40 UTC
It's not really clear from looking at the bug, so I'll briefly summarize. Slimserver (and Squeeze Network) doesn't support mms:// streaming. It's something we'd have to license from Microsoft, and work out the logistical and legal issues about putting it in to an open source project like Slimserver. This is the reason this bug has been open collecting information for so long: so that we can see if the money and effort is worth it for our customers.

The reason some of these URLs work is because Slimserver (and Squeeze Network) make a guess when they recieve an mms:// URL. They ALSO try the same URL with http://, and many of these servers also happen to have http:// streaming turned on, which we DO support.

Comment 41 GerritK 2009-06-04 03:10:50 UTC
All streams from http://live.irib.ir/live_en.htm seem to be affected (mms only streams)
Comment 42 Dariusz 2009-07-21 06:47:45 UTC
I am far disappointed. I recently bought Squeezebox Boom which I chose mostly for it's support of many standards. Was sure that it would be able to play nearly all internet radio streams, at least including wma, mp3 and ogg.
In the specification there is no information that it does not play mms type streaming.
If I knew it, I would not buy it - especially that Philips Streamium NP2900/12 is a fine alternative.
I see that the bug is rather a legal issue and probably will never be solved.

If you still need other not working examples of not working mms streams, there is the site: http://101.ru/?an=index_eng
All wma links are not working (few hundred).
I do not understand why Squeezebox Boom is not compliant with mms streaming, one of the most important streaming standards. It's very frustrating, great thanks for Logitech.

MicroSoft deprecated MMS in favor of RTSP in 2003 and dropped support for it in Windows Media Services in 2008. We should look into supporting RTSP but we are unlikely to support MMS. Note that we do support MS-WMSP (AKA MMSH) which is a modified HTTP over TCP which is what Windows Media Player 'rolls over' to if RTSP fails (Windows Media Player 11) or if MMS fails (earlier Windows Media Player versions).

Deprecated by microsoft or not, lots of station still uses mms only. Not having it seriously crippels the SqueezeBox. Especialy with some alternatives supporting mms.

Some links for the national danish radio (DR) don't work either.
For instance, there is a link to the latest news:
http://www.dr.dk/nyheder/htm/service/asx/uge/SenesteFM.asx

This link returns a .asx xml document containing this link to the actual stream (which varies over the day as it contains the date and time of the latest news):
mms://WMS.dr.dk/storage/auto/Nyheder/Radioavisen/Uge/06012010_ravis_onsdag_17_00.wma

I really hope you can do something about this, since this particular link is quite important to me.

the following URLs don't work in SBB:

http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s88600&partnerId=16

http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s14815&partnerId=16

After disables built-in WMA decoding , on
Windows, the stream plays ok but if I play by using mysqueezebox.com , it is still the same problem I can't play on my SBB.

Pls advise how to fix it. Thank you
