Description Blackketter Dean 2007-08-27 12:36:19 UTC
Any button event that provides audio feedback through the device shoudln't have a sound effect played on the device.

back, home, add, go should have sound effects on button presses.

Although I understand where you are coming from I disagree on this. Why I think this is a bad idea:

1) The audio feedback (e.g. playing music) may be delayed (for example a radio station) or the track may have a quite intro.
2) I think it would be confusing, as users would have to learn when they should expect feedback on the remote and when they don't.
3) So far the feedback is that some of the sound effects are delay leading to multiple key presses, etc. Not playing sounds effects sometimes won't help.

If people don't want sound effects they can turn them off.

How about we add another choice to the sounds menu called "Playback" that handles FWD/REW/PLAY/VOLUME and test it both ways?
Comment 3 Chris Owens 2007-09-04 12:11:20 UTC
I am inclined to agree with Richard. I know Dean is a very spartan user, but lots of users like all the bells and whistles. They'd like us to ring their doorbell and flash their room lights with every button press if we could!
Comment 4 Richard Titmuss 2007-09-05 06:04:29 UTC
This means adding more options. Do you not think the sound effects menu is already too complicated, being able to disable individual sounds. Should we not simplify this anyway?
Comment 5 Blackketter Dean 2007-09-14 15:31:27 UTC
Here's what I propose to simplify while still giving the user some control:

Sound Effects

None [ ]
Navigation [ ]
Scroll [ ]
Playback [ ]
Charging [ ]
Volume >

None would turn off all sounds, navigation would toggle GO, BACK, BUMP, HOME; Scroll would be the scroll clicking, Playback would be Play/Add/Fwd/Pause/Rew/Vol+-, Charging would be the docking sound.

Volume would take you to another screen where you can adjust the sound effect volume.

New menu needs implementing.

New menu implemented in r848.

Dean can you suggest some help text for the sound effects volume screen, it looks a little bland without.

Playback sound effects need implementing (related to bug 5357).
Comment 9 Blackketter Dean 2007-11-11 07:53:39 UTC
How's this:

"Use the wheel to adjust the volume of the sound effects."

Note: There's a cosmetic bug with this screen now where the volume bar is not aligned properly relative to the volume icons.

Help string added in r874. Slider layout issues are covered by bug 5314.

Changing target to 7.1 for the playback sounds to be added.
Comment 11 Richard Titmuss 2007-11-15 07:55:36 UTC
Playback sounds added in r912. This is all fixed now.
