Bugzilla – Bug 3808
"Connecting to wirless network..." message no longer times out
Last modified: 2008-12-18 11:38:58 UTC
This started happening in FW 59, not sure if later versions (are there any yet?) are effected. Also, i am not sure if i have entered the right Component for this bug. Anyway, when my server is shut down the SB3 constantly displays the message "Connecting to wireless network...". It used to time out and go blank. It looks a bit silly now, so i have to turn it off at the wall. I dont like to have my server running 24/7.
Hi Dominic, I have just tested this and in the latest firmware (v59). I am seeing this message timing out and the screen going blank. You said that you turn off your server, does this include the access point or are you using ad-hoc networking? Is it possible that the squeezebox is picking up an ir signal from somewhere that keeps the message displayed? Thanks, Richard
It's ad-hoc, so when the PC (acting as the access point) is down the message remains. i have seen other people of the forum say they get this too (not with adhoc i believe).
I bought a Linksys wireless access point yesterday. It works great, but when i power down the server and access point (i have powersaving system that turns of my speakers, monitor and access point ect when i turn my server off) i still get "Connecting to wireless network..." message permanantly on the squeezebox.
Ross, could you have a look at trying to reproduce this? Perhaps you'll have better luck at it than me.
cc'ing Richard so he will see Ross's results.
Dominic, I'm not really sure what SHOULD happen when the Squeezebox is trying to connect to an access point that has since been powered off. I would think that the Squeezebox should time out and the screen should go blank. To address your original issue, I've done a series of tests to try to reproduce this and I was not able to see the behavior you described. With firmware version 59 on the Squeezebox, connecting to XP ad-hoc network, it works fine if all parameters are accurate. If I shut down the XP machine, the Squeezebox screen goes blank as it should, if I tap the power button on the SB remote it attempts to wake up SlimServer, and tries to connect, and after 10 seconds the screen goes blank. Chris / Richard, do you guys want any additional information from Dominic? If no, perhaps we can have him try a factory reset?
I have done a factory reset a couple of times. I don't understand why you can't replicate this. I does it with adhoc and with an access point. As soon as the access point is powered off, or the PC is powered down in adhoc, it just stay on the screen. I just retested it 5 mins ago, still the same. BTW, the 'connecting to slimserver' does still timeout when the access point is on but slimserver, or the pc runing slimsever, is shut down. Could it be a faulty unit?
Yes, I agree this is strange. What happens when you use the remote while the message is on the screen. Does the message then timeout? Does pressing left return to the Squeezebox Setup menu?
If i press the power nothing happens and pressing left takes me back to the network setup menu. In other word, the unit has ot looked up - as soon the the server and access point are powred up the unit connects just fine. Have you seen the thread on the forums where 1 or 2 other people have reported this?
See thread http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26632 The display does blank, but then comes on after a short while (approx one minute). I can look at fixing this now.
This bug is fixed in squeezebox2/3 firmware 60. You will be notified again when it is made part of a nightly release.

oh... should have read that remark of Richard better. Just downloaded the nightly only to find out it still contained version 59
Squeezebox firmware 60 has now been released into test.
I apologize; I've been slow in adding this notification to some of the bugs. Please ignore it if you've already tried the new firmware. This bug fix is now available in the nightly Slimserver release. The release is available from: http://www.slimdevices.com/dev_nightly.html If you prefer to wait for the next official release, you will be notified when it occurs. You'll need to install the new version of Slimserver, and then force your Squeezebox to upgrade its firmware by holding down the 'Brightness' button on the remote control until the firmware upgrade process begins. If you are still experiencing this problem after upgrading your affected players to the new firmware, please reopen the bug.
