Bugzilla – Bug 3391
upgrading slimserver often causes problems
Last modified: 2009-09-08 09:14:25 UTC
problems including: - playlists coming up empty - server crashing on startup - database being incomplete in almost all cases the workaround is to remove the slimserver.pref and slimserversql.db file and start over with new ones. the support team will start gathering 'before' and 'after' samples of this removal process and attach them to the bug.
bug 3386 can probably be considered on facet of this one. If you can find a willing test subject, --d_server --d_info --d_sql log might shed more detail on the case given in bug 3386
Chris: can you get with Kevin on this and make sure that we've got all the information we need and all the bugs filed to make sure that the 6.2.2 to 6.3 transition is smoother? Also, kevin told me in person just now that many of these issues are related to iTunes.
Engineering: We need to know what information to gather. I already mentioned what I thought would be pertinent, but perhaps I am mistaken. I filed a separate bug, 3402, for the iTunes related issues.
separate issue, bug 3402, filed regarding the iTunes integration bit.
(TMID 3258) on Linux RPM, on installing 6.2.2 his playlists don't show up anymore. from the user, "Since that time, when I enter playlists into the server they work fine for 2-3 hours then they simply disappear. Also, my server has crashed a couple of times since I upgraded but generally it stays up. This was never a problem with the beta or with 6.2.1." Attaching his slimserver.conf files (the old one and then a new one)
Created attachment 1230 [details] user's original conf file andthe new one created
(TMID 3374) user upgraded to 6.2.2. from user, "I recently upgraded to 6.2.2 and ever since the upgrade (went through without a hitch) whenever I access the SlimServer via the web interface, the Squeezebox v3 hangs (shows as if playing a song, but no audio). As long as I don't use the web interface it seems OK when I stick to the remote." user deleted prefs and db files and rescanned library, and now it works fine. user's old and new files are available as an attachment.
Created attachment 1232 [details] prefs and db, old and new
Just had a phone in, upgraded to 6.2.2 from 6.2.1, when he did that everything worked except the random mix function. After he hits random mix it only plays the first song.
TMID 3560, upgraded to 6.2.2, wouldn't run. Copied .pef and .db files, downgraded to 6.2.1 and now it works! Attached to ticket are NEW and OLD .db and .pref files.
I have added these items to my test procedure for the 6.3 release. If it goes better this time, I'll close this bug.
I have updated my test procedures. However, I am going to leave this bug open and targeted at 6.5 to remind me to look for additional problems with the 6.3 launch.
*** Bug 3519 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Ross notes that shifting back and forth between versions of Slimserver often causes problems, perhaps because of changes to the formats of the pref file and db. I should care about how future changes might cause this kind of problem.
Subject: Re: upgrading slimserver often causes problems We should make sure that upgrading/downgrading between 6.2.2, 6.3 & 6.5 are working before we ship, at a minimum.
What's the status here? This is our only 'blocking' bug for 6.5 Thanks
The status is it's a difficult bug to mark 'closed' due to the fact that it's so broad. Nonetheless, due to the work and testing that's gone in so far, I'm going to mark it 'fixed' at this time, and Kevin or whoever else gets irritated after the 6.5 release can inevitably reopen it.
