Description Nicolas 2011-09-06 11:16:06 UTC
SB server should behave like almost any other software and provide a "browse
folders only" mode without any kind of scan (may be 99% of customer's problems)
nor database creation or query.

Most information for usual search are present in file names, and the search field of Windows 7 explorer usually allow to find almost immediatly any music file without using database nor using tags.

We should be able to select files with Windows explorer and play them immediatly.

This is how most popular music software behave.
It would be a useful workaround for customers having too big scanning problems.

I specifically created two different bugs, because it deals with different issues and asks for different things.
This was explained in the thread I mentionned.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90147

I edited the title of the bug.
This one is about Windows 7.
It is about selecting files with Windows 7 explorer, not related with TinySBS, where Windows 7 explorer is obviously not available.
(There is no problem if browse folder mode asked for TinySBS is also available with SBS, but it is a different request)

Did you decide to fix both bugs at the same time in the very near future, or should I reopen this one ?

You want to be able to play tracks directly from Explorer? This doesn't require any work on the server side, but an extension to the explorer (which I think had been done before).

I want to be able to choose tracks with Windows Explorer (multiple-selection is better).
Web interface should have an "Open file" button somewhere, without having to install plugins or whatever.

Play directly from the explorer could be a plus, but if so, this should be included in standard installation, and customers should be asked if they want to activate this feature when they install SBS.

It should be possible to select tracks not located in the "music folder" of SBS.

Actually we should be able to start with an empty database, end selected files at will.

Actually the sensible and desirable behavior is the one you can find with MediaMonkey for example.

When you start the software the first time, you can choose folders to scan.
But you can skip this step.
You can add selected files at will.
You can add selected folders at will.

Have a look at the file menu and database maintenance in MediaMonkey

In comparison, with SBS, you are stuck with an initial and mandatory scan of one folder (or several folders with LMS, but problems are similar).
This is far too restrictive and this is why so many people are stuck with scanning problems.

If I have 100 files in a folder, I should be able to select only a few ones and forget about the others.

Actually we should be able to

- start with an empty database.
- add folders (recursively) if we want
- add specific files (selected with the Windows Explorer) if we want
