There must recently have been a change to the code for the non graphical displays (SB1/SliMP3) which 
broke umlauts & cie. Please have a look at the screenshot. It's taken from the "Now playing" screen and 
_should_ display the following:

Gestoppt - Es l�uft gerade...
(#1 - 620/2167) M O S T L Y ...

Sometimes the same string does display correctly, sometimes it does not. Eg. in the Shoutcast plugin, 
there's the group "Popul�re Streams" ("most popular"). It's correctly displayed in the genre list, but not in 
the streams list.

The leading 0 in the small screenshot seems to be the wrapped arount last
character of the second line.
