See also bug 8159 specifically comment #14. Using these steps Controller winds up in the Blue Icon Of Doom situation. Tom points out that simply browsing to music - artists causes Controller to reconnect to the source, successfully. I was able to reproduce this as Tom describes, when browsing to artists Controller displays "connecting to [source]" and it succeeds, icon goes white. Controller should do this as soon as it connects to the network to avoid BIOD confusion. 

Thanks Tom. I guess this means I need to get back to trying to reproduce 'the other' BIOD.

This is still reproducible with r3160.

Richard checked in a fix for this bug in 7.3 r3188, and I've both reviewed the code as IMO correct and verified that fix in practice.

This bug has been fixed in the 7.3.0 release version of SqueezeCenter!
