Bugzilla – Bug 9688
Button needed to access "advanced settings" in the SC setup wizard
Last modified: 2010-07-27 05:17:46 UTC
it was discussed in this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53406 essentially what is being requested here is that at some point during the setup wizard, a button be presented that would allow a user to set some advanced options prior to the wizard completing setup. this is common in MANY programs. the fact that slim seemingly doesn't want to do it is mystifying. i am not saying the button should be where the "back, next, cancel" buttons are. feel free to "hide it" in the upper left of the dialogue, or give it a weird appearance, or whatever. personally if i wanted noobs to avoid it, i would give it a title of: "options for advanced users only" and have the static dialog say somethin to the effect of "if you don't know what you're doing, keep out. enter at your own risk." the ability to be able to set more options at the time of setup would be very greatly appreciated by SC users who DID know what they are doing, and i don't think a noobs mind would melt or their SC crash just b/c they would have this option at setup time when they will have the SAME options available to them post setup. i hope slim reconsiders its position on this. thx.
Why in the world would anyone need this? How extensive do you make this 'advanced setup' within the installer? No matter what you do, there will be dozens of settings that you don't cover. Those are all covered in the web interface's server settings. Very few users should be doing clean installs of the program so often that this would be of benefit to anyone. If they are doing a lot of them, then they're doing something wrong.
jim, did you read the thread? the idea is that you could set the options the way you want them PRIOR to the first initial automatic scan post setup, (since slim doesn't want to allow opting out of the initial scan). this bug is linked to bug 9687 if you reread the first couple of posts in the thread i think you'll see where this is coming from. your point on which options to include is well taken, but i think many would be obvious, and the community could comment on any missing or un-needed. you seemingly understood this from your post. instead of arguing over defaults, (i don't group multidisc sets), why not allow users to set it their way at setup? http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=347263&postcount=9
I just think implementing such an thing in the setup wizard would be a complete and utter waste of time. Good luck with it, though.
well, how do you explain your comments in the thread then? whats so wrong with it? many programs allow you to configure them in the setup wizard... word, excel etc... so do lots of non MS programs. you seemingly agree with being able to optout of auto scans, or change the mulidisc setting, whats the beef with doing so during setup optionally?
