Description Mike Walsh 2008-10-09 13:11:38 UTC
it was discussed in this thread:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53406

but essentially, its very irritating for SC to always think it knows best.

what if i want to change TWO options that would trigger a rescan?

what i propose is being able to opt out of automatic rescans all together, and instead be presented with a status line on the settings or home page that says:

"a clear and rescan of your library is required for changes in options to take effect."

and so that leaves it up to the user to do it, when they want to, after adjusting all the options they want to.

also, if a user changes such an option, then changes their mind and goes back to the original setting prior to a rescan, the "nag" reminder should go away. it would be irritating if it didn't if the user changed their mind and didn't want to rescan. (of course, if they change two options or more, and go back to the original setting on all but one of them, the nag should still remain).

i understand slim wants to be "automatic for the people" but it has to understand that a lot of the people find that confusing and disorienting, while others plain don't like it. all i am arguing for here is the OPTION to NOT be automatic.

thx.

Better yet, design the new schema so that it requires no rescan, no matter the setting change. At worst, it might recalculate or repopulate some database fields, which should take no more than a few seconds on a slow machine.

yes, obviously that would be best, but if the new schema WON'T allow that then this bug stands as is.

its not really part of this bug, but one of my big beefs with SC is the total lack of delineation between "scanner options" (ie. pre scanning) and "library options" (ie. post scanning).

it gets even more confused when u try to figure out which options really NEED to be pre scanning ones, and which ones don't.

Squeezebox Server should behave like other popular music library softwares.
Automatic scan may be interesting when it works fine.
But a lot of users do not really need it, or simply don't want it.
We should be able to disable automatic rescan, even at SBS startup.

Most problematic situation is when the music folder is located on an external usb hdd, and when this hdd is disconnected.

Even with TinySBS, we should be able to scan manually the library (ideally with a normal PC), and prevent any automatic rescan while TinySBS is used.
