Description Blackketter Dean 2008-08-26 14:39:36 UTC
Phil Meyer noted:

-------------------
I was a bit confused over the brightness modes. Is this correct:

While Off - when the power is "Off".
While On - when the power is "On".
Idle - When the power is "On", and a screensaver has kicked in.

If so, "Idle" should be called something else (eg. "Screensaver" brightness) - it's confusing, especially for seasoned SC users, as I thought it was "power on, nothing playing".

Also, does that mean any screensaver - i.e. the same brightness mode will be applied for Idle screensaver and Playing screensaver? I guess it only applies to screensavers "when playing" and "when stopped", because "screensaver when off" is covered by "While Off" brightness mode? I find it more confusing than it used to be with "Power Of", "Idle" and "Playing" brightness levels.
-------------------

I propose the following names for the brightness modes:

Powered Off Brightness
Powered On Brightness
Screensaver Brightness

Dean - this is kind of a dupe of bug 6933. We have tons of descriptions which are inaccurate. While we can change this one quickly, I really think somebody should go through all settings pages and verify our strings. This person should imho be a. native EN speaker and b. no developper. (just to make sure it's not me ;-))
Comment 2 Blackketter Dean 2008-08-26 20:02:05 UTC
Agreed, we need to look at everything, but let's not wait to make improvements. Please make this change and we'll open new bugs for other strings.

Comment 3 Michael Herger 2008-08-26 20:12:51 UTC
That's the exact reason why I didn't close this as a dupe.
Comment 4 Michael Herger 2008-09-03 09:05:20 UTC
Your proposed wording isn't consistent with the screensavers, which can be configured for all three of these modes. What about:

While active
While pausing
When powered off
Comment 5 Michael Herger 2008-10-02 09:46:46 UTC
Dean - any opinion? We should probably start planning a translation pass for 7.3
Comment 6 Blackketter Dean 2008-10-19 11:04:02 UTC
Hm, how about:

Active Brightness
Idle Brightness
Powered Off Brightness
Comment 7 Michael Herger 2008-10-19 11:53:15 UTC
Fine with me.
Comment 8 Michael Herger 2008-10-20 02:39:24 UTC
Oops, spoke too soon: what you propose is what we already had. At some point we added shorter versions of the string to be used on Boom. What you're complaining about is the short version. What you propose is the long version we already had... I can rip out the short version in favour of having the long version on Boom too if you want.

Or we use what I proposed in comment #4 - it would still fit in better than the long versions.
Comment 9 Blackketter Dean 2008-10-22 16:07:17 UTC
The original comment was pointing out that While On wasn't technically right. So how about "While Active" instead of "While On"
Comment 10 Michael Herger 2008-10-23 00:14:42 UTC
change 23662 - change wording to While Active/Idle/While Off
Comment 11 James Richardson 2008-12-15 12:06:35 UTC
This bug has been fixed in the 7.3.0 release version of SqueezeCenter!

Please download the new version from http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html if you haven't already.

If you are still experiencing this problem, feel free to reopen the bug with your new comments and we'll have another look.
