Description Julius Dauz 2008-08-08 12:54:49 UTC
A customer reported that he has been having issues with WOL over his homeplug network.

I have emailed the customer regarding additional network information.

It could be that the homeplug is reporting the wrong MAC address (it's own) instead of the one from the PC running SC to SBR in which case WOL would fail.

We have decided _not_ to support cases where a wireless bridge or homeplug is involved which reports the incorrect MAC address. See bug 7594, comments #3 and #4.

So, if it works when SBR is connected directly to the network, i.e. without homeplug, this bug will most likely be a 'won't fix'.

Wireshark log
Comment 5 Christian 2008-08-15 07:15:20 UTC
Hello,

Here's an update to the previous information regarding the HomePlug model.

I actually moved the whole set-up on the same switch. Test did fail as well.

So I did document the test sequence and also record a Wireshark log.
It does include the WOL that was manually generated from another laptop and which worked fine.

Would really appreciate if you could review this and give some views & directions why WOL is still not working with 7.1 on my minimal set-up.

And as I still keep in mind my target set-up - I am wondering if the HomePlug model actually is one of those that may have been reported to tweak the MAC@ as well. This would help me setting expectations.

Looking forward to some news - best regards - Christian.

Christian, am I correct you are trying to invoke WOL from the Controller and not from the Receiver? What happens if you press the button on the Receiver when your PC is suspended?
Comment 7 Christian 2008-08-19 13:45:29 UTC
Yes - you're correct. I have only tried with the Controller.
I just pressed the (yellowish) front button on the Receiver : nothing
I pressed longer - it started to blink slowly (red) : still no WOL on the server's laptop...
Should I run a wireshark trace as well (need to move a computer to do that)?
Comment 8 Felix Mueller 2008-08-19 13:50:32 UTC
Sorry, I forgot. The Receiver only sends a WOL packet when the LED is blue. I guess you need to wake your Controller to get to that state though. And you don't need to press long, a short press should do it. (If you get to the red slow/fast blinking you pressed to long.)
Comment 9 Christian 2008-08-19 14:02:15 UTC
Well - I switched the Controller on. Light quickly changes to green then blue on Receiver. Controller says "Connecting to Squeezebox" and circling...

I pressed the blue led several times - still no reaction either.
I then moved the Controller out of its circling search to home menu.
I then pressed the blue led on controller again.
No apparent WOL seems to be sent - laptop is not waking and still in suspend mode...

Hmm, what firmware version does your Receiver have?

PDF file outlining test sequence and firmware versions
Comment 12 Christian 2008-08-20 00:56:37 UTC
All firmwares are described in the Test Sequence report I filed. It used to be a word document and there was a type mismatch (am a bit new to this bugzilla interface - apologies)- so I am uploading it again as PDF file - for your reference.

Receiver firmware is "36". Extensive firmware details are included in the PDF doc as well. I have been assuming that by installing SqueezeCenter 7.1 it would update all other firmwares accordingly as well... but maybe this is not the case?
Comment 13 Felix Mueller 2008-08-20 09:06:02 UTC
Thank you for the additional information.

It is now at least clear why WOL from your SBR doesn't work. SBR firmware version 36 which is included in SC 7.1 does not yet include the WOL feature. It has been implemented in later SBR firmware which will be included in SC 7.2. Sorry for the confusion.

Now, WOL from SBC currently only works if SBC is connected directly to an access point. If, like in your situation, SBC is connected via SBR to the network, the WOL feature from SBC is not working yet. We are looking into fixing that in a future SBC and/or SBR firmware release.

In the mean time you could either use your access point or wait for SC 7.2 and then use SBRs WOL feature.
Comment 14 Felix Mueller 2008-10-17 04:10:42 UTC
It is most likely that the homeplugs in question do not report the correct mac address (see comment #1) and therefore WOL doesn't work and currently we have no plans to support WOL in such a setup.

As for Duet in bridged mode WOL not working from SBC, there is already another bug 9644 open for that so I am going close this bug as a won't fix.
