Error during Install

See attached images, during an install of 7.1 or 7.2 I get the following error messages in Windows Vista (SP1).

Installing 7.0.1 does not generate these errors.

> Error during Install

This is neither an error, nor an error message. But it's a warning telling the user that there's a connectivity issue. It's a feature. That's what all the changes were for.

The issue here seems to be that despite my efforts this is too confusing. Maybe changing from Warning to Information would already help?...
Comment 2 Dennis Mutsaers 2008-06-27 23:58:35 UTC
I think showing which ports to open in the warning message would be a big help. Or showing the results of the test, tell which ports are open/closed.

I've opened the ports in the firewall manually (vista) but I still get the warning. I do ignore this warning, because all devices do work without problems.

Dan how does this message look to you? Should it be clearer? Is it okay?
Comment 4 Michael Herger 2008-06-30 10:06:45 UTC
Please provide EN translations for my placeholders :-)
Comment 5 Dan Evans 2008-06-30 13:48:05 UTC
May I suggest:

"We've detected a problem.

One or more of the ports required by SqueezeCenter to communicate over your network is blocked. SqueezeCenter uses ports 3483 UDP, 3483 TCP, and 9000 TCP. The most common cause for this is security software on your system, specifically a Firewall.

For more information, please go to www.logitech.com/support and search for articles on your specific security software or on firewalls in general."

Dan - thanks for the feedback. Will try to implement this.

Would you (anyone) mind taking a look at all firewall detection related strings as found here:

http://svn.slimdevices.com/7.1/trunk/platforms/win32/installer/strings.iss?r1=20587&r2=HEAD

Would be great - thanks!

I just got the firewall message installing on XP with the 4 July nightly build. I hadn't recieved it on any prior installs. As near as I can tell the message is false - no needed ports are blocked. All functions of SC, controller, and players apear to be working fine.

Something in the blocked port detection must be broken. I am running Norton/Symantic AV and firewall. Installing on Windows XP sp3.

Since this one is about the message I thought that I'd add this to it, however, since it isn't about the cosmetic issue of the actual text perhaps it should be split off to it own? Just let me know.

What version have you been installing last? The code has not been changed for a while now.

What exact error message did you get? I wonder whether the firewall is blocking access to the port the installer is opening, but not the one squeezecenter.exe is opening.

Just the message that some port was blocked and a list of port numbers, blaming the firewall, etc. It looks like the message discussed here. It looked more like the suggested change than the print screen attachment.

The last version was the one from last Sunday. I didn't get the error message then. I generally install every Saturday morning US Central time.

As an aside, if the install is checking a bunch of port numbers it might be nice to specifically state which exact ones are blocked... Although, listing all of them is better than nothing.

And again, as near as I can tell none of the mentioned ports are blocked and SC operates normally in all ways. Norton Symantic AV and firewall - current version. Windows XP sp3, fully updated with all Windows updates.

Did not get the message installing nightly version 21816. Did get it installing a version earlier this week (let me know if you need the exact version).

please review strings as found in comment #6
Comment 14 Dan Evans 2008-07-30 08:59:25 UTC
This should not be assigned to me. Assigning to QA.

Dan - I still think you're closer to the customer than any of us. You know best what they stumble across. Would be great if you could help us on this subject. Thanks!

Moving to 7.3, waiting for input on message boxes
Comment 17 Chris Owens 2008-11-17 09:46:52 UTC
If Dan doesn't want to review these strings I'm happy to. The only problem I found was this string:

en.CiscoVPNStatefulInspection=If you encounter connectivity issues with SqueezeCenter,%n please make sure "Stateful Firewall (Always On)" is turned off

It's not clear to me where this 'Stateful Firewall' setting is located. Is it in a VPN control panel? In our prefs file?

The other strings look great. Let's run with them.

As usual, Michael, no special effort is needed to get these translated for the 7.3 release if those strings have already been sent.
Comment 18 Michael Herger 2008-11-17 23:51:47 UTC
Yes, that setting is in the VPN's menu. Change 23950 changed it to

"If you encounter connectivity issues with SqueezeCenter,%n please make sure "Stateful Firewall (Always On)" is turned off in the VPN software".

Feel free to reopen this bug if you still think the wording needs to be changed.
Comment 19 James Richardson 2008-12-15 12:05:08 UTC
This bug has been fixed in the 7.3.0 release version of SqueezeCenter!

Please download the new version from http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html if you haven't already.

If you are still experiencing this problem, feel free to reopen the bug with your new comments and we'll have another look.
