Basic layout of edit in place favortes

It would be great if we could get rid of the separate Favorites page and have all the favorites functions on the main home page in the web UI. This would include:

- Create a new favorite (see the + icon)
- Create a new folder (see the + folder icon)
- Fold/expand folders (see triangle)
- Edit favorites that are editable, i.e. remote URLs (see pencil icon)
- Delete favorites (see trash icon)

Attached are some rough sketches.

Brian: What do you think?

I'd still vote against hierarchical browsing of Favorites only. Either we do it for all menus, or none. Just doesn't make sense as we don't have tree navigation anywhere.
Comment 5 Blackketter Dean 2008-06-18 09:11:18 UTC
I don't think that this is reasonable, the hierarchy can be arbitrarily deep and would be nearly impossible to implement.

The vast majority of folks will have only one level of Favorites, and even if they do create folders, they are unlikely to be more than one or two levels deep.

I'm mostly concerned with getting the favorites management set up for direct, in-place editing. The hierarchical bits are just a side part that we need to support.

I agree with Dean here, I've heard complaining about having to navigate into a favorite to edit it and this solution seems reasonable to me. I realize we should keep some consistency, but favorites seem to be somewhat of a special case

I like Dean's ideas. It's not very intuitive in it's current form.

What will clicking on the favorite name do? If it also opens the edit form, then there's no need for the pencil/edit icon. If it opens a separate 'info' window, then editing in that window should also be possible.

Don't forget the 0-9 hotkey numbering, which also needs to be editable in the web ui.

As I think of this... If I fix in-place editing for the Favorites (in their own mode - I've never fully implemented this for the Default skin due to the pretty awkward template), it should be pretty straight forward adding this to the main menu..

I'll have to rework the template quite a bit.

Good point, jj.

Right now, clicking on the title takes you to the info page for that favorite.

It might make sense to allow the editing of the title, url and hot key numbering on that page rather than in place. Just click on the title and edit there.

Dean, I'm sorry, but I have to disagree a lot with you in our Favorite issue... While I do agree that showing favorites details is a bit useless, I doubt edit should be the default action. How often do you edit a Favorite? How often do you play it? I never change them (rather remove and add another one). But some of them I play every day. The default action for the bar should rather be play than edit.

I'm sorry, this is not going to happen for 7.2

The resolution for this will occur with 8.0 release...

This whole thing is getting redesigned after 8.0.

Please re-evaluate based on new mysb interface...
