Bugzilla – Bug 8319
cannot set WPA / WEP keys
Last modified: 2009-09-08 09:19:26 UTC
I've been using Boom via ethernet (bridged through another device), mostly with the CAT "boomcat" SN service and yesterday tried to set up the Boom WiFi. It displays nearby SSIDs, but I cannot establish connections to APs that require encryption. If I select a "g" AP I see a screen with "Enter your WPA password:" on the top line and nothing on the second line, not a single pixel lit. If I spin the knob to try to make something happen on the second line, Boom resets after a few seconds. If I select a "b" AP I am asked to choose 64 or 128 bit. Then I see a screen with "Enter your WEP key:" on the top line and a row of asterisks on the second line (shorter if I choose 64-bit), none of them highlighted, and no obvious "cursor". If I spin the knob to try to make something happen on the second line, Boom resets after a few seconds.
I can't reproduce this here with my Boom on FW 9. QA folk: we need to reproduce this asap. Peter: Can you add the info about your router and its configuration here. If we can't reproduce this here, we'll probably want to swap that unit out, Peter. -dean
is the wifi card in this device a separate card as well? Soem other cards have causes reboots if they came unseated during shipping.
The "g" AP is a Linksys WRT54GS running DD-WRT firmware (v23 final?), in g-only mode, encryption required. It works fine with my SB2, SB3, and SBC units. If you want more details, I can get those in 8 hours or so. The "b" AP is running stock firmware. I think it's a Netgear MR814 (I can verify that later). It's only there for occasional use by b-only devices, to allow the "g" AP to run in g-only mode; I used a Squeezebox 1G with it years ago but my Linksys "g" router has been my primary since I bought my SB2. Loose card: I'm happy to get out my torx drivers & look if that sounds like it might be the issue. The package did seem pretty well protected with bubble wrap when UP delivered it, and I didn't notice any signs of damage or abuse. If Boom uses the same cards as Slim-badged SB3s, I could try swapping cards, too. The Boom does report the same SSIDs that I recall seeing with my laptop -- and it displays more SSIDs when I move it to a "better" location, so it's somewhat functional. Is there a factory reset procedure I could try? Current settings -> info shows 0% wireless strength for what that's worth -- I figured that the strength indicator might not really work unless the Boom were associated with an AP.
Probably dupe of bug 4120. I have seen similar behaviour where boom would restart if I tried to change a WEP key. A factory reset usually helps. According to Felix this isn't boom only.
A factory reset allowed me to configure WPA for my "g" router. Once set, I held the Left arrow to try again, selected the "b" SSID, and saw the same problem I reported earlier. When I returned to setup and chose my "g" AP's SSID again, it reconnected to my "g" network just fine. Is this a dupe of 4120? It certainly sounds similar, but the description of 4120 makes it sound like Chris was able to enter a key when switching encryption methods. Here, I seem to have a "read-only" key screen. Plus I'm hesitant to mark this as a dupe of 4120 since 4120 is a public bug. :-) Reducing severity to Major -- this is a big roadblock, but one that only requires helpful info from the support folks; it's not bricked. I think I checked the Quick Start guide and it didn't have info on performing a factory reset; perhaps it should? Thanks.
