Bugzilla – Bug 8271
Boom string changes in "Settings"
Last modified: 2009-09-08 09:22:57 UTC
Some more changes to Boom strings in Settings "Now Playing Information" should be: "Now Playing Info" "Headphone/Sub Out" should be: "Line Out" "Off (Go right to turn on) (*)" should be: "Alarm: On" "Power Off Brightness" should be: "While Off" "Power On Brightness" should be: "While On" "Use Ambient Sensor" should be: "Automatic" "Repeat current song" should be "Repeat song" "Screensaver when idle" should be "When idle" "Screensaver when off" should be "When off" "Screensaver when on" should be "When on" " 'Smart' Gain" should be "Smart Gain" Also Under text size, we don't have good font names. They need to be named properly. Large/Medium/Small would be good.

Maybe font names should be opened as a separate bug, as it affects all platforms. Also see bug 8143 for confusion in the terminology used for scrolling settings. It's closely related to the font names used.
re: headphone/sub out, I originally used "Analog Out" because that's what we were calling it in discussion. Then, I believe, it was changed to "headphone/sub out" because this is the label on the port (see bug 8117). Is the label now "line out" ? Font naming is a whole other barrel of monkeys. Do we care if the names are similar for other players, even though the font is metrically different (ie: narrow on Boom, wide and fixed height on SBG)?
The goal was to shorten the string just for Boom, but would calling it "line out" be confusing if the port isn't labeled as such? I think maybe it would. Dean are you okay with keeping the string as "headphone/sub out", even though its too long?
How about changing it to: Out: Subwoofer or Out: Headphone that changes when you hit the right arrow. I think we have other places where we use this kind of multiple choice setting and it would be pretty clear. Otherwise, Line Out is better. "Headphone/Sub out" is awkward at best despite it being what's printed on the unit.
change 20392 has these shorter strings, plus a couple of other ones I found. It also shows example font names that are more friendly and distinct from the names used for other players.
thanks kdf!
