Bugzilla – Bug 7558
Digital outputs not working properly
Last modified: 2008-07-15 14:31:44 UTC
I have been trying to work with a customer in playing high resolution files through the Transporter's digital output to his Deqx DAC. Here are the results that the customer has reported to me: 1. WMA 96/24 shows 30.5 kHz sample rate in the transporter and my deqx takes the digital output. 2. FLAC 96/24 shows 96 kHz sample rate in the transporter and my deqx doesn't take the digital output. 3. Analog output from the transporter works in both the above cases. 4. This behavior confirmed with both the release firmware v.36 and beta v.40.
I suppose I can look at this with the digilyzer once I find it. Otherwise this might be one for Sean.
(In reply to comment #0) I have had a chance to think about this and my comments are below. > 1. WMA 96/24 shows 30.5 kHz sample rate in the transporter and my deqx takes > the digital output. This is most likely the result of bug 6920 and bug 4774. Bug 6920 is about WMA properties not reported properly by SqueezeCenter. Bug 4774 is about the tool we use for playing WMA not supporting 24/96 files without changing them to 16/48 on the fly. > 2. FLAC 96/24 shows 96 kHz sample rate in the transporter and my deqx doesn't > take the digital output. 24/96 FLAC is output as 24/96 however I believe the deqx dac does not support 96/24 digital input. When playing WMA 24/96 it worked because the deqx was actually receiving 16/48. Resolving as works for me. If the deqx does turn out to support 24/96 digital input please reopen and add additional comments.
Hi Steven, The DEQX spec says that it supports up to 96/24. Here is what I have received from DEQX yahoo group: "I do also have the Transporter and listen with great pleasure to the FLAC 96kHz/24 bit, using aes/ebu input on the DEQX... It is working very well. (Apart from sometimes a nasty click when switching from a 44,1kHz file to FLAC High res.)" I have tried v.40 beta and FLAC 88.2/24 via digital SPDIF but the result is the same. I can hear onle a click as the guy from DEQX yahoo group has mentioned but no music. I don't know is it the transporter or DEQX. Please advise. Thanks, - Alex
Alex, which model DEQX do you have? Is it possible it needs a firmware update? Did you try with both IEC-958 (S/PDIF) and AES/EBU encoding? I was also curious which connections you have tried such as optical, coax, BNC, or XLR. I would also recommend sticking with SqueezeCenter 7 and FW 36 for now and be sure to do a factory reset and reprogram the xilinx. Directions can be found here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?PlayerFirmware
Alex, did you find any additional information about your DEQX?
Steven, Thanks for asking. 1) I have got mail from one guy from DEQX forum. Apparently he has the same configuration/setup: the transporter and DEQX with the same versions of firmware on both ends. Here is what we both have: The transporter: SqueezeCenter 7.0 firmware v.36 DEQX: firmware v.63 I used the same FLAC file for my testing for apple to apple comparison. 2) I could not get it to work through both digital RCA S/PDIF and XLR AES/EBU. 3) Now actually I can not getting the transporter working at all, not even through analog (XLR or RCA), not for 96/24 or even 44/16. VU meters show that there is a signal somwhere inside. 4) I checked my DEQX with my CD player. It works fine. 5) About 3 months ago I had same dead output and also top half of the left display didn't work. I brought it to your office and they replaced the display. They said they didn't do anything with the output but it started to work. 6) It looks like I'm going to bring the transporter to you guys so we would have a chance to test the output in person :-) I'm wondering if you have the test case to verify hi-rez digital output. I hope this information is good enough for the case. Thanks, - Alex
Alex, One last thing you can try before you contact support for service is to reprogram the xilinx chip. This chip can sometimes get confused after switching between firmware versions. You may want to do a factory reset as well after reprogramming the xilinx. Instructions on how to do this can be found here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?PlayerFirmware
Hi Steven, You were right. Xilinx reprogramming and reset factory settings fixed the basic problem. I have analog out and digital 44/16 output. Still there is no luck with Hi-rez digital output. All as I described in the previous mail. Thanks, - Alex
Hi Steven, I have got some more infor from DEQX yahoo group: "The sample rates are visible in the I/O manager (DEQX). eg. Squeezebox 48K reclocked CD digital out from Meridian player 88.2 PCM input from SACD player 96K digitised analog signals 96K Any change from above to 48K is clearly audible too. Some players take the SACD stream and convert it to PCM. This can be intercepted and the signal then output as digital. There's a company in Switzerland who sell complete mods. Many small manufacturers have done this as an exercise too. Also Dr Oerlich sells a part kit for cheap Pioneer players." Please let me know if you need more info. Thanks, - Alex
Hi Steve, One more mail from DEQX people who has transporter: "I played the Gimell test tracks, and looked for you at the DEQX I/O manager. The results: 16/44,1 playing, I read; dig OK 44100 Hz 24/44,1 dig OK 44100 Hz 24/48 dig OK 48000 Hz 24/88,2 dig OK 44100 Hz (!!!!) 24/96 dig OK 96000 Hz To make sure the sample rate of the Gimell 24/88,1 I tried another 24/88,2 track, with the same result: dig OK 44100 Hz" OK, now I believe I have enough evidences that DEQX and transporter should talk trhough hi-rez digital. However I don't know how to proceed since it could be something wrong with either my DEQX or the transporter. Please advise. Thanks, - ALex
Sean, any thoughts on this one? Thanks!
Hi, I have a quick question. Is the 7.1 for WMA 24/96 or FLAC 24/96 as well? Thanks, - Alex
Alex, You need to run FW v.40 or later (v.42 is currently the latest) to get proper 88.2 support. Based on the information given here, there's no indication of a firmware bug, so I am closing this for now. I suspect you have a hardware issue but I don't know whether it's the TP, the cable, or the DAC. I would recommend using the internal test tones in TP's firmware setup menu to test all the sample rates. That is the simplest way to verify your system's ability to play all of them. You can reopen this bug if you find evidence of a software problem.
Alexander Please retest with 7.1-21761 & Transporter FW 46. Let us know if you still have any issues.
