Description sand 2007-11-10 01:16:25 UTC
I think that the SlimServer web interface should alert me if it finds something wrong with a file during scan.
Now, I just see a message that it is scanning, when in fact the process has stopped/is stuck. This is not very user-friendly.

It should return with an error code/message if it does not accept the file or can not access it or some other error occurrs (not hang).

After some googling, I found out that I had to use the command line interface to start & stop the scan, to find out which file it was (one out of 5000..).
This is quite a difficult process, with a high learning-curve, for someone who like me is not too familiar with Linux.

I hope a status message, or even better to show the scanning process (listing the processed files), in the web-logpage would be possible to implement..

Features like these will attract more non-Linux-persons!

which version of Slimserver/Squeezecenter are you using? SqueezeCenter 7.0a1 currently has a progress ui for scanning, which would show incomplete if something failed along the way.

Actually, I think this should be a bug report and not a feature report, since the scanning never completes.

My setup:

Squeezebox 3
QNAP TS-109
Seagate ES 500GB
SlimServer Version: 6.5.4 - 12568 - Debian - EN - utf8
Server IP address: 192.168.1.4
Perl Version: 5.8.8 arm-linux-gnu-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.41

Can you reproduce this issue with the latest 7.0 nightly build?

Hi Michael,

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I'm not sure there is a 7.0 build for the QNAP?

But there are several posts in the forum from people that have ran into this issue, maybe one of them can test or have already tested..
Here are just two of the threads on the subject:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36168
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39328

I hope You can make a fix for version 6 also.. I'm not sure the QNAP will have enough power to run the new version 7..(?)

/Simon

Let's add a list of unscannable files to the scan status page in server settings for 7.1

Nice, but what about when the scan seems to run forever?
It would be nice with a time out so it could move on to the next track instead of hanging.
As it is now, it would not log the offending file, since the scanner process gets stuck while processing it (v6.5.4).
Comment 7 Chris Owens 2008-06-04 10:56:44 UTC
Apparently there is another bug about processing and handling scanner log data and errors. I need to review that bug and try to figure out the correct behavior.
Comment 8 Chris Owens 2008-06-19 09:15:59 UTC
I can't find this alleged bug about finding the scanner log. Michael I think this should be assigned to you, and I'm not sure why it wasn't earlier.
Comment 9 Michael Herger 2008-07-24 03:52:24 UTC
Chris - it's bug 6369 (linked in the depency list). This very likely won't happen in 7.2.
Comment 10 Michael Herger 2009-04-08 08:34:56 UTC
change 25880 - display message in progress information if scan fails (web UI, CLI -> to be integrated with control panels/prefpane).

A list of problematic files can be found in the scanner.log file (linked from the same page in the web UI)
