Description Jim McAtee 2007-11-04 16:56:15 UTC
The current description is only really valid for the server side of things. On the player side, it doesn't make much sense. Among other things, you can't define new format strings here, so the entire explanation is wrong. I would suggets explaining three things:

1. The formats shown will be available in the remote interface. To add an additional format for selection at the player, select one from the drop-down and save the settings.

2. The selected format is the format that is currently used in the player display.

3. To define new formats to the selection, go to Server Settings > Interface > Title Format.

(This pref is both awkward to explain and awkward to do, as you can only add one at a time here. I'm not sure why you don't just make all of them selectable at the player. I can't imagine people changing these very often from the remote ui, so whether there are 3 or 15 choices at the player should make little difference. It would simplify this pref a lot, and make it much easier to understand.)

please add your comments to bug 4956. This is already open for reviewing the title format options ui.
Comment 2 Jim McAtee 2007-11-04 19:47:57 UTC
OK. Even if the UI doesn't change, the descriptions need to be different.
Comment 3 Brian Dils 2007-11-06 13:52:34 UTC
I can't see the description so some reason, can someone copy/paste?
Comment 4 Jim McAtee 2007-11-06 14:02:45 UTC
It doesn' appear in popup window if you run your mouse pointer over the magnifying glass?

These are the formats available for selection both in the
web interface and on players. To remove a format, clear
the text box, to enter a new format, place it in the empty
one. Available data elements are: CT (content type),
TITLE, GENRE, TRACKNUM (tracknumber as an int), FS (file
size), ARTIST, COMPOSER, CONDUCTOR, BAND, ALBUM,
COMMENT, YEAR, SECS (total seconds), DURATION
(minutes and seconds), VBR_SCALE (vbr/cbr), BITRATE,
TAGSIZE, VOLUME (volume name), PATH, FILE, EXT (file
extension), LONGDATE (current date, long), SHORTDATE
(current date, short), CURRTIME(current time). Elements
can be separated by anything (or nothing). The separators
are only used if the data elements are present.
The Current selection is the format that will be used on the
web pages.

Brian, can your review?

Brian: please comment.

Sorry it took me so long to get to this one...

I think improving the UI would actually do more for the usability of this setting than changing the description. What about showing examples of each format instead of the cryptic "FILE.EXT". I think the user will be able to figure out what makes each one different.

And why would the user need to remove or change one of the formats? I can't ever see a time when a format should be deleted. If the user sees a format that is ALMOST right, they can just create a new format that is similar instead of editing a format that they might want to switch back to in the future. So we should just allow them to add and not delete or edit formats. We should have an "add new" at the bottom, at which point we can explain what their options are. Almost like a "format builder" or wizard...

I'll try to put together a mockup of this soon...

Like KDF points out, the discussion of what should be done with title formats is at bug 4956. This one just notes that with the way it operates now, the description text on the player settings' side is wrong.

Brian what's the status of this? If it hasn't been translated yet, it's not going to make it into 7.0.1. Thanks for any info.
Comment 10 Brian Dils 2008-04-14 11:13:26 UTC
I don't think its anything that's going to be ready for 7.0.1. Mike and I have been talking about this feature and whether we should redesign it or think about removing it. We're having a SqueezeCenter UI meeting tomorrow and I'll bring this up...
Comment 11 Jim McAtee 2008-05-03 12:52:27 UTC
While a new interface is (or isn't) designed for doing title formats, at least fix the descriptive information shown for the player settings to avoid confusion.
Comment 12 Chris Owens 2008-06-23 09:43:26 UTC
Updating the message would be part of bug 6933
Comment 13 Blackketter Dean 2008-08-04 12:48:43 UTC
Ping brian.
Comment 14 Blackketter Dean 2008-08-06 12:10:24 UTC
We missed the window on this for 7.2. Brian: can you take a look soon? Let's not slip this again.
Comment 15 Brian Dils 2008-08-06 18:46:23 UTC
Why can't all formats be available at once? Why does the user have to choose 5 out of 10 to be available?
Comment 16 Jim McAtee 2008-08-07 13:28:36 UTC
(In reply to comment #15)
> Why can't all formats be available at once?

That's discussed a little in bug 4956. I don't understand it either. The idea that a user would be frequently changing title formats using the remote interface seems a little crazy, so I don't see any value in being able to define the selections available.

> Why does the user have to choose 5 out of 10 to be available?

It's not limited to just five. You can add as many as you like (one at a time). Select something for the blank item, press Apply, repeat.
Comment 17 Weldon Matt 2009-07-29 16:21:15 UTC
This is getting totally redesigned in 8.1
Comment 18 Chris Owens 2010-02-02 15:08:26 UTC
Matt Weldon doesn't work for us any more.
Comment 19 Alan Young 2011-11-06 23:25:07 UTC
Unassigned bugs cannot have a priority.
Comment 20 Jim McAtee 2013-09-29 18:35:24 UTC
Can we fix this message, now that there aren't ten different ideas about how this is going to fix itself?

Suggest something simple:

Select a title format to be displayed on this player. Formats can be edited in the Interface settings.
