I can't find a similar report so here goes:-

I first noticed this problem when I upgraded to the 6.5 release. It's still there on the 7 beta (I'm currently running the version from 26th October).

When two Squeezeboxes are synchronised random song play duplicates lots of tracks, I've attached 2 text files to illustrate this. 'Sync Tracks.txt' shows the MP3 tracks played for an approximate 12 hour period on synchronised Squeezeboxes. 'Unsync tracks.txt' shows the MP3 tracks played for a later 12 hour period when the Squeezebox was unsynchronised. The only difference in set-up is that for the second of the files I had unsynchronised the Squeezeboxes, everything else is the same.

You can see that the tracks played when the Squeezeboxes were synchronised shows many, many duplicates - files are played 4 times or more. Conversely, AFAICS, the track list for a similar period when the Squeezebox was unsynchronised shows not duplicate plays at all. Both files have been sorted in MP3 name order to make it easier to see the duplicate plays.

My primary use of Squeezeboxes is, and always has been, to play random songs on 2 synchronised Squeezeboxes (a v2 and a v3) so this is quite a show stopper for me and what drove me away from 6.5 to try the 7 beta release. Unfortunately, the new release is no better in this respect although, for the first time ever, audio synchronisation seems just about perfect.

Unsync'd Track List

List of tracks played over a 12 hour period when the Squeezeboxes was not synchronised (this is the only set-up changed from the former list)

Oh, one thing I didn't mention was the size of the library from which these tracks were played. Squeezecentre reports there are '1505 albums with 14077 songs by 1542 artists.'

Changed summary to make sarcasm more clear :). Andy says he'll have a look.

I cannot reproduce this. Tried random song play with 2 synced players, and it worked fine. Assigning back to QA to try to reproduce.

Any other info you have would be helpful, and make sure to remove any 3rd party plugins that might be interfering.

What did you use to generate those lists of tracks? What values do you have set for 'upcoming songs' and 'recently played songs'?

Kevin, the fix to bug 5210 may have some influence on this. When that bug hits, then the track-start-event reporting gets mixed up (pretty much lost, I think), and I guess that this would stop the Last.fm reporting (although I have not checked this). If the bug hits, then the playlist will run out after N tracks at which point I think that it will get restarted and the bug cleared.

But in any case, I cannot find anything that would cause random play to be less random when synced but perhaps chosen from a smaller set if running into bug 5210.

Hi Andy. I could hear the repetition in what was being played but the only way I could 'prove' it was happening was to download the list of tracks logged on to LastFM.

I have Random Mix set to show 25 upcoming and 5 recently played. Thinking about it I have no idea why I have it set that high so I've just dropped the upcoming to 5 as well. Choosing from a small subset of tracks is a good description of what I think I could hear happening.

I've assumed the fix to bug 5210 is in the latest nightly as I don't know how to check so I'll download/install and re-test. Thanks.

OK I would also suggest disabling/removing SlimScrobbler to be sure that isn't doing something to interfere.

I've been running the 11th October release for nearly 24 hours and this problem seems to be resolved (and teh good news i that it doesn't seem to matter whether I scrobble or not). Just FYI (and I don't see this as a problem) I note that if random song play plays a track by a particular artist it will quite often play a different track by the same artists a few tracks. Thanks for fixing this, my Squeezeboxes are now synchronised again which creates a much better musical ambience in our house :). Kevin

I see this is still open so it's probably worth me confirming that since I installed the 11th Nov and later releases I've not been experiencing the repeated play of a small number of tracks and the sequence of play seems, well, random. Thank you. Kevin
