Description Dan Evans 2007-09-26 17:42:04 UTC
Is it possible to add support for Mac aliases so that if they are found in the Music Folder the scanner will follow them to additional music?
Comment 1 KDF 2007-09-26 20:34:01 UTC
It would be tricky. I think the alias is a front end creation. Even the OSX terminal hasn't a clue what an alias is. I create an alias of a text file, the terminal will say the file is zero size and empty.

As a workaround one can use symbolic links instead of aliases. I personally use a great free utility called SymbolicLinker that allows the easy creation of symbolic links inside the Finder.
Comment 3 Spies Steven 2007-09-27 10:58:53 UTC
Ah, here is the link http://seiryu.home.comcast.net/symboliclinker.html

This is also covered in the FAQ:
http://slimdevices.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/slimdevices.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5971

but it could use being updated with the symboliclinker option.
Comment 5 Dan Evans 2008-02-08 14:25:01 UTC
This is becoming more of an issue for Support. As more and more people go buy cheap external drives and/or NAS drives, the use of symbolic links is increasing. But walking a customer through use of Terminal on a Mac is often a no go. And people are not satisfied with the FAQ answer. (neither am I.)

Michael: when time allows, can you please evaluate this?

(I have changed it from Enh to Normal, and unassigned it's milestone so it can be reassessed.)
Comment 6 Spies Steven 2008-02-08 15:42:50 UTC
Can someone at least update the FAQ with the symboliclinker and other gui options for the Mac?
Comment 7 KDF 2008-02-08 22:00:01 UTC
see here for a way to resolve aliases:
http://use.perl.org/~pudge/journal/10437

sadly, this is probably not workable as a hack to File::Next but it could perhaps offer a way to get a number of aliases in the main music folder.

change 17820 - assigning to QA for testing. Please test

- OSX 10.3/4/5
- with and without alias
- folders with aliases pointing to some sub-folder (loops)

Do I smell apples?

Steven do you have time to look at this?

Thanks.

This change seems to be working great with various alias combinations on both Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5. I was not able to test 10.3 on account of bug 7494.

It appears that this change only applies to the scanner and does not work with the browse music folder function.

Michael, can alias functionality by added to browse music folder as well?

Symbolic links still function properly in both cases.

I'd assume so. Will have to take a closer look why it doesn't already. Thanks for testing!
