Sometimes when I switch players, I end up with a home screen with no choices and no way to switch players back, requiring a hard restart.

Try the home button, that's worked for me.  I blamed network problems as the P4 was very short range in my house.  This report sounds familiar...might have a dupe somewhere?

This problem will be fixed with bug 5322.
