If I play a whole album on my SB2, after the album is finished, the screen saver does not engage. Instead, the display goes back to the first track and sits there at enhanced brightness.

This is due to the screensaver being blocked while showing now playing.  The design is to prevent a 'now playing' screensaver from being called repeatedly.  bug 4351 covers an enhancement to allow the screensaver type to change from playing to idle screensaver when playback mode changes from playing to idle.
