Description PlBee 2006-10-14 01:44:05 UTC
with the new firmware (64) there is a click at the beginning of every new playing (Apple lossless file)
Comment 1 KDF 2006-10-14 10:31:30 UTC
fw 64 on a SliMP3?

See bug 4312, and Bug 4366. Please do try to search known bugs as it really helps when reports are similar, that the comments be made on the existing bug to expand it's scope if needed, rather than divide focus. thanks.
Comment 2 PlBee 2006-10-14 11:01:55 UTC
other bug reports talk of quite long (few ms) white noise on some mp3
i refer to cliks on every (i didn't checked my 10000 files) apple lossless file
Comment 3 KDF 2006-10-14 11:31:04 UTC
4366 is specifically about clicks in ALAC in windows XP, Squeezebox1
this simply shows a case for slimp3(not fw 64) and osx. In this case, it would indicate a bug in transcoding alac to mp3, which is the common output format between SB1 and Slimp3. Most likely stray header data getting into the audio stream.

please confirm that this is slimp3, as your initial comment about fw64 is a contradiction.

Comment 4 PlBee 2006-10-16 05:27:41 UTC
sorry for not checking this
this is not a slimp3 bug but a server or firmware error
which gives a click on every new selected file (apple lossless)
when you press play for a new file, not between files of a selection (transition is smooth)
Comment 5 KDF 2006-10-16 08:46:21 UTC
Please try the next 6.5.1 nightly build, as andy just put in a fix for mp3 framing, which may help (apple lossless is transcoded to mp3 for slimp3 players).
Comment 6 PlBee 2006-10-16 12:21:39 UTC
just tried 6.5.1
no effect !
clicks are still there on lossless (and not on mp3 neither on AIFF)
Comment 7 Chris Owens 2006-10-16 16:00:51 UTC
What kind of device are you using as your player? Thanks.
Comment 8 PlBee 2006-10-17 02:07:38 UTC
i have 2 squeezebox 2 - the same effect is audible on the two of them

Subject: Re: click at beginning of new playing

please enlighten my mind ..
do you mean to say that you transcode apple lossless to mp3 when
played on a squeezebox ?

It is not the default setting for the Squeezebox2 and 3, but it is possible to set Slimserver to transcode Apple Lossless to MP3 by going to the Slimserver -> Server options -> file types page. What stream types do you have checked for the Apple Lossless file type on that page?

Since the original SliMP3 can only play MP3 streams, transcoding Apple Lossless to MP3 is required.

required or possible ?

i have just checked file type : apple lossless -> stream : wav
for being sure it wouldn't convert to mp3 and stream in an uncompressed format

but i must say that these options are quite obscure

if all the stream option are checked for the apple lossless, how will it be streamed ?
Comment 12 Chris Owens 2006-10-25 14:25:48 UTC
The reason is the player firmware (the code running on the Squeezebox) cannot decode the Apple Lossless format. So, Slimserver has to transcode (or "translate") the music into a format the Squeezebox can play.

The SliMP3 is even more basic. It only understands MP3, so Slimserver is required to transcode Apple Lossless tracks to MP3. For Squeezebox 1, 2, and 3, you can select how you wish to transcode the content. Most users select a lossless format, such as FLAC or AIFF, so that as much fidelity is maintained as possible.

Slimserver's stream type selection is in the order listed. So, in the case of Apple Lossless, the options are FLAC, MP3, and WAV. If you have all three options checked, Slimserver will transcode the file to FLAC for streaming to the player.

If only one option is checked, Slimserver will transcode to that format. I just want to make sure that you don't only have MP3 checked!

Thanks for any info!

Comment 13 PlBee 2006-11-24 01:16:45 UTC
i downloaded a nightly build of slimserver (6.5.1)
but the bug is stll there,
i noticed that the mp3 bug on certain mp3 files, were gone, but the click at the beginning of apple lossless files is still there
any clue of resolving this soon ?
Comment 14 Chris Owens 2007-05-23 15:27:04 UTC
Steven, could you have a quick look with a SliMP3 and try playing AAC files and see if you see this symptom?
Comment 15 Chris Owens 2007-05-23 16:25:27 UTC
Belay that order! The original reporter emailed me to say he's no longer experiencing this issue in the 6.5.2 release!
Comment 16 Spies Steven 2007-05-23 16:37:40 UTC
I'm glad since I was not able to reproduce :)

However I do notice the exaggerated gap for AAC files that has been reported in bug 5038 & bug 4662.

Closing resolved bugs - if you feel this bug still exists please first re-test
with the latest SW/FW version. If you are able to reproduce then feel free to
reopen and attach new logs / steps to reproduce.
