Description Ross Levine 2006-10-13 18:33:26 UTC
SlimServer version 6.5.1 - 10311

Apple lossless files play fine, but there is an audible pop / snap / click between tracks. You can hear it when you skip tracks, easy to reproduce.
Comment 1 Ross Levine 2006-10-13 18:34:24 UTC
*** Bug 4367 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Comment 2 Ross Levine 2006-10-13 18:36:06 UTC
I left this out, this is only noticable on a Squeezebox 1.
Comment 3 Chris Owens 2006-10-16 15:49:24 UTC
Would you try one more thing, Ross? Change the File Types page so that ALAC files get streamed as MP3 to an SB3 and see if the same thing happens there, or if this is something specific to the SB1 firmware.
Comment 4 KDF 2006-10-16 16:00:50 UTC
also see bug 4370 which involves slimp3 and alac->mp3 conversion
Comment 5 Ross Levine 2006-10-16 18:16:28 UTC
Note: Enabled Apple Lossless -> Wav, it still clicks.

Enabled Apple Lossless -> mp3, no more click!

Thanks Chris!
Comment 6 Chris Owens 2006-10-25 14:14:38 UTC
wait, what did that prove? :)

Is this still an issue for one of your users, Ross?
Comment 7 Ross Levine 2006-10-25 14:24:51 UTC
I believe this just isolates the issue to the Alac decoder, no? When avoiding the Alac decoder and transcoding to MP3 no more click...
Comment 8 Chris Owens 2006-10-25 14:40:09 UTC
Did you change the decoder options from alac to mov123 as well as setting it to stream via mp3? That would seem to narrow it down to alac (b0rken) vs mov123 (working). But mp3 streaming working with no pop doesn't seem to me to prove anything. Sorry, I'm just trying to remember what we were doing with this. Please let me know if I'm on crack.
Comment 9 Ross Levine 2006-10-25 15:54:29 UTC
I can't find the customer :( I close the ticket when it was identified to be a bug. I tried searching Ticket Maestro, but it appears the search function is problematic. I'll open a ticket with Dan about it.

Is anyone out there having this problem?
Comment 10 Scott Bennett 2006-10-27 13:16:25 UTC
Yes, I am having this problem! Mildly annoying. Let me know if I can do anything to help diagnose it. Happens at the beginning of every Apple Lossless track.

(SS 6.5.0, XP, SB1)
Comment 11 Ross Levine 2006-10-27 13:40:56 UTC
Sorry about that Scott!

In server settings -> file types, try unchecking all the Apple Lossless / Apple AAC except for this one:

Apple AAC, Lossless or Movie File	MP3	mov123/lame

Do you still hear a click?
Comment 12 Scott Bennett 2006-10-27 14:09:44 UTC
If I do that, nothing plays at all. However, if I deselect all but:

Apple Lossless	MP3	alac/lame

then tracks play with no clicks.
Comment 13 Chris Owens 2006-11-02 15:50:09 UTC
Well that makes it sound like mov123 might be the culprit! I don't see that there's any other open bugs that sound similar to this one.

Scott, is leaving that file type setting on "Apple Lossless MP3 alac/lame" an okay workaround for you? Or are there other consequences of that that I'm forgetting?
Comment 14 Scott Bennett 2006-11-02 16:56:38 UTC
Not quite- sorry if I wasn't clear. I can't get the mov123 decoder to work at all. Tracks just don't play. I just moved the server to a Mac and can't get it to work there either. In summary, alac / mp3 produces no clicks, alac / wav does.

Correct, mov123 isn't working. But lame is! Is this an acceptable work around for you Scott? Everything still working OK?
Comment 16 Scott Bennett 2006-11-08 21:28:12 UTC
So is this an issue with the ALAC decoder, and we're waiting for those guys to fix it? Can I somehow switch back to the mov123 decoder? LAME isn't really an option for me, because I want to keep everything lossless. I can live with the popping if I know that it's going to be fixed eventually. Otherwise I'll just get a new SB3 I guess. :)
Comment 17 Chris Owens 2006-11-09 12:36:32 UTC
Okay, I have to summarize this for my own mental health, so bear with me.

1) Playing ALAC files on an SB1 causes a pop at the beginning of the track.

2) Setting the 'File Types' page to decode ALAC files using alac and stream as mp3 plays with a pop.

3) Trying to set the 'File Types' page to decode ALAC files using mov123 and stream as mp3 results in an error trying to play "Problem: can't open file for" which is the error that appears when Slimserver doesn't know how to decode a file.

Dan, should I be able to set alac files to still decode using mov123 instead of alac? I feel like I'm probably missing something here.
Comment 18 Harry McQuillen 2006-11-25 11:53:47 UTC
I am having the same problem but on Mac OS X 10.4.8. SB1, Apple Lossless. I do not want to listen to my music as mp3, otherwise I would have encoded as such!
Comment 19 mc 2006-11-30 18:17:09 UTC
Has this problem been fixed?
I am at 6.3.1 but don't want to upgrade unless the AAC files play with the AIFF decoder.
Thanks,
Mark
Comment 20 Chris Owens 2006-12-01 11:03:51 UTC
This problem has NOT yet been fixed, I'm afraid. Please bear with us!
Comment 21 mc 2006-12-01 11:06:34 UTC
OK. Thanks for the reply. Will wait. Meanwhile 6.3.1 is working great.
Comment 22 Kristian Walsh 2006-12-18 10:05:01 UTC
I was also experiencing this problem: it looks like the Squeezebox (mine is also a v1) is playing the WAV header data by mistake.

As a quick workaround, change your convert.conf entry

from:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
alc wav * *
        [alac] $FILE$
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

to:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
alc wav * *
        [alac] -r $FILE$
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This tells alac not to attach a WAV header to its output stream; it also removes the popping.

My Config:

Server: Slimserver 6.5.1, on Mac OS X 10.3.9, on G4 450 MHz
Network: Cat-5 via switch
Player: Squeezebox v1, wired-network-only version
Comment 23 Scott Bennett 2006-12-19 09:17:27 UTC
This workaround also works for me. Thanks Kristian.
Comment 24 Chris Owens 2006-12-19 10:38:44 UTC
Dan does this seem like a production-quality fix?
Comment 25 Dan Sully 2006-12-20 22:05:50 UTC
Yes. It's been commited for 6.5.1
Comment 26 Chris Owens 2008-03-07 09:04:06 UTC
This bug is being closed since it was resolved for a version which is now released! Please download the new version of SqueezeCenter (formerly SlimServer) at http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html

If you are still seeing this bug, please re-open it and we will consider it for a future release.

Squeezecenter 7.0

Getting audible pops / clicks / skips at beginning of FLAC tracks going to Transporter through ethernet cable. Some files also stop after a few seconds with display says "rebuffering" but song doesn't continue.
Comment 28 John Keeling 2008-07-31 16:27:51 UTC
This needs to be re-opened.
A new Squeezebox user discovered the problem recently and blamed MusicIP archived analysis - http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=324187&postcount=342.
This was taken up in the MusicIP forums -
http://forums.musicip.com/index.php?showtopic=3649 where the MusicIP people came to this conclusion "We have analyzed these songs to verify that our meta-data is embedded and then played them in iTunes, QuickTime, and MusicIP Mixer 1.9b6 and have not been able to reproduce the audio glitch mentioned. Additional I have riped and downloaded several ALAC tracks with no luck in reproducing this glitch. Verifying that the audio stream was not corrupted by our tags.

Additionaly we have loaded our Squeezebox with these files and have verifed that there is a poping noise that does occur in between the decoding. This appears to be an issue with the Squeezebox and needs to be further addressed with them."

An attempt to attach the .m4a file to this bug report was rejected, but I can email the offending track if needed.
Comment 29 Ross Levine 2008-07-31 16:33:54 UTC
John please email me the file and we'll take a look. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

.m4a file

.m4a file that will make a noise at the end before replaying if repeat is on on SqueezeCentre 7.1.0 and earlier.
1. Make sure that the settings on the player for Repeat are set to Repeat Playlist.
2. Play this track. Noise will occur at end of play before it starts again.
Comment 31 John Keeling 2008-07-31 22:14:59 UTC
Ross Levine,
I managed to get the file up as an attachment, if it is unplayable I can email it to you. Just ask.
The only other settings that I can think of that you will want to know are :
SqueezeCentre/Settings/Advanced/File Types :
File Format : Apple Lossless FLAC ALAC/FLAC in the drop down box

The noise was discussed in this thread http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40131. I am not the only one that has come across it, nor the only one that has decided to re-rip all music to get away from it. If you read the thread to page 3 you will see that it has been reported.

sample ALAC file that has been archived in MusicIP with pop/click at end
Comment 33 Chris Owens 2008-08-04 11:42:03 UTC
Removed Dan Sully as assignee.

Note if there's rebuffering involved, the root cause is typically a poor network connection. The usual solutions, including repositioning your router antennas or your Squeezebox should be considered.

Ross to continue to look at this for a 7.3 fix.
Comment 34 John Keeling 2008-08-04 14:51:37 UTC
Chris Owens commented "Note if there's rebuffering involved, the root cause is typically a poor network connection."
I have two SB3s (and associated Win XP SP3server computers) set up in two different houses and can demonstrate the noise problem on both systems. Neither system has ever demonstrated re-buffering problems which I understand primarily manifest themselves by stuttering and displaying a rebuffering message on the SB3. I also doubt whether the MusicIP people would have poor network connections between their SB3 and their server. However, later today I will connect my SB3 via ethernet cable, replay a track that produces the noise and report back.
Comment 35 John Keeling 2008-08-04 17:11:38 UTC
I connected my SB3 via ethernet, disconnected its power, reconnected power, changed setup to use ethernet. Played Walking in the Air - noise at the end of track just before the repeat starts. Same as wireless.
Comment 36 John Keeling 2008-10-03 15:44:58 UTC
In converting some of these .m4a files to FLAC with dbPoweramp (in an attempt to avoid the noise at the end of the track) dbPoweramp Music Converter reported errors. Pursuing the errors with the authors of dbPoweramp, Spoon, I received this advice "The file was corrupted, there are 8 samples missing from the end."

Maybe these missing samples are causing the SC player to make the noise.
Comment 37 Stefan 2008-11-05 10:45:18 UTC
I hear the click between tracks when I force the SC to stream native WAV in an attempt to hear real CD quality (lossless wav files). I dont want to have SC downsample to FLAC (That way, there are no clicks though).
Please assign the problem to a bug you think is the right one.

Wired network, SC 7.2.1 on SSODS 3.15

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Apache Rose Peacock (1.4112e+06 bps) from Blood Sugar Sex Magik (ripped using windows media player)

SC Settings, File Types:
WAV	FLAC	Disabled
	MP3	Disabled
	WAV	Native ->1411 kbps (CBR) -> klicks between Tracks

versus

WAV	FLAC	Disabled
	MP3	Disabled
	WAV	Native ->1411 kbps converted to 705.6 kbps (ABR) -> klicks between tracks

What would be a setup to hear real unconverted CD Quality (or even higher Bit Rate)?
Comment 38 Ross Levine 2008-11-13 11:32:21 UTC
I believe the SSODS forum might be a better place to get help with SSODS.
