Bugzilla – Bug 4329
Firmware Upgrade uses power off brightness setting
Last modified: 2013-05-17 18:32:46 UTC
It appears that the message that a firmware upgrade is required and you should press and hold brightness uses the power on brightness setting (or possibly is always bright). But the actual upgrade progress screen uses the power off setting, and if you leave you power off setting very low, its hard to see. IMHO, both the request and the progress should be a full brightness, and not depend on the display settings.
again, another important bug to fix prior to a big release, just like: https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4856 taking care of these prior to release might save you all a lot of headaches.
This seems to have gotten lost. I just wasted some time on the latest firmware update trying to figure out what was broken. What was broken was that the SB3 was telling me to hold brightness to start the update, and with the screen dimmed I couldn't read the small print. (The screen is normally dimly showing a clock in large print).
i think i now have mine set to automatically update, which i did b/c i don't trust my original remote at all, i damn near have to crush the brightness button to get it to work. i wonder if the SBC can authorize an update for the SBs if one isn't using auto-update?
So what happens if power off brightness is set to 0? Does the user never see the message regarding 'press and hold brightness'?
Haven't tested that, but I assume so.
If that's true then this sounds like a bug, not an enhancement request.
this line takes care of brightness 0. otherwise, the update progress uses the brightness of the current state. off state if your player is off.
I don't necessarily get to all of my squeezeboxes in a timely manner (I have an SB Classic at an office I get to once a month or so). On my return today, I noticed that an update was waiting, and the message has burnt into the display. So forcing full brightness or some other level as some here have suggested is maybe not the best solution either. Perhaps as soon as the SB receives an IR command it can resume a brighter display, but I don't think it should stay bright all the time when waiting on an update. I will look into the auto-accept updates option.

Changing product to SB3, as that is the focus of this bug. SC now warns you on screen when a firmware upgrade is pending for an IP3K player. Felix: could we look into some type of 'screen saver' for the IP3K products when a pending firmware upgrade notice is displayed so we don't get burn in as mentioned in this bug?
James: Firmware doesn't know what's displayed on the screen while connected to SC or SN, so it doesn't know when a firmware upgrade is pending. That information (and a screen dimming) needs to come from SC or SN.
Again when I returned to my other office after being away from it for three weeks, the 7.4.x upgrade was waiting. I can now clearly read "Please press and hold BRIGHTNESS to begin" in the volume bar when adjusting the volume on my SB3. The rest of the time the VFD just looks patchy due to uneven burn-in. Is there anything short of unplugging the device that I can do to work around this in the meantime? Would it be possible to have a setting (on all devices even) to automatically just install updates? I come home to seeing my Controllers waiting for updates all the time as well, and personally would prefer if they Just Went w/o my interaction.
I see Mike Walsh refers to an automatic update function already being in there, but I don't see where that is applied?
i set my SB2 to auto-apply fw updates. i forget where the setting is, but it exists. i don't know what client you are talking about, and i also don't know if a similar setting exists for the SBC, but if it does, i'd like to set that as well.
Thanks for the help, Mike. I am trying to apply this to an SB3 which I assume should be rather similar to an SB2. I can't seem to find the "advanced" menu in settings any more, but I'm also slammed with work so haven't had a chance to dig around much.
sb2 and sb3 are essentially the same. i set mine via the supplied sb2 remote/VFD, the setting is in there somewhere. i don't know if u can also set it via SN or SBS, maybe? what i would do is call the support line, and tell them you KNOW the setting exists, but you can't find it. they should be able to talk you thru it.
turn the sb3 off hold the left arrow key until you pop into the setup menu scroll down to the settings entry go into the menu and one of the entries is the auto update setting set it to yes - then back out and reconnect to your server.
Thanks Marc, I'd forgotten about the "hold left" hidden menu.
