Description Dan Evans 2006-04-13 15:20:56 UTC
User is getting consistent errors during installation, during startup, and whenever he tries to run Slimserver manually. Please ticket #959.

The nature of the errors is usually a "panic" error, for instance:

"Panic: Can't create C:\DOCUME~1\[username]\LOCAL~1\Temp\pdk-____\[lots of letters and numbers]\perl58.dll

 * Had user clean out his Temp folders, uninstall Slimserver, reinstall and he gets same error.

 * From user:

On Apr 11, 2006, at 4:49 PM, [user] wrote:
Ok,
A. Uninstall Zone Alarm Security Suite.
B. SS was already uninstalled.
C. Downloaded and installed 6.2.1
D. Installing had the same problem. Panic: Could not create.....Perl58....
E. Completed install after clicking ok on the popup.
F. Each time I tried to open SS the same popup Panic.
G. Installed patch from yesterday. No joy.
H. Reboot. No joy

I. Just for good measure I uninstalled 6.2.1 and tried everything with 6.2.2 No joy.

 * Also from user:

On Apr 11, 2006, at 3:56 PM, [user] wrote:
1. Under my login (with full administrator privileges) A. Uninstall
SlimServer B. Download the latest SS update from your website.
C. Installed this version 6.2.2 dated the 11th.
D. There was no problem with the install.
E. I started SS and all I get is the little balloon that says
starting SlimServer.
F. I rebooted the machine. During boot up I get the same
(SlimServer encountered a problem and must close. Debug or send
report.
G. I tried to start SS again. No joy.
H. I installed the patch you sent me yesterday. It installed.
I. I rebooted the machine per your instructions. Same popup during
boot.
J. I tried SS again. It still would not start and I get the old
Panic popup.

K. I uninstalled SS and restarted the machine.
L. I logged on this time as the ADMINISTRATOR M. I repeated items A
thought J with the same results.

 * Then, on April 13, I spoke to Scot... walked him through:
 1. walked through running slim.exe in a command window. he got a panic error.
 2. rebooted system into Safe mode. Uninstalled Slimserver and reinstalled. There was a panic error during installation.
 3. rebooted into normal mode. During Startup 2 errors popped up: a general error on slim.exe, as well as a panic error on perl58.dll

See ticket #959 for contact information.

Looking at that screenshot, this guy has a lot going on on that machine. Could it be a permissions issue or out of disk space?

One thing that I've seen before to try... There's a maximum path name on Windows. Have him move the installer to the root of his C: drive and install from there.

Moving this to Chris to try to reproduce.... Need to narrow this one down a bit.

Comment 3 Marc Auslander 2006-04-14 09:55:00 UTC
Forgive (and ignore as you please) gratuituous advice.

(I assume you've asked the user to run a chkdsk to make sure his file system is ok).

If I were trying to shoot this, I'd try to create the perl58.dll file by hand in the place its supposed to go.

I'd use the actual perl58.dll bits - where ever they come from.

Possible causes are: space, permissions, antivirus software, antispyware software.

An unlikely possibility is some sort of infection of the machine - but I don't know why a rootkit would care about this path.

Comment 5 Chris Owens 2006-04-14 15:03:49 UTC
a quick and easy test might be just to try creating a hello.txt file in that C:\DOCUME~1\[username]\LOCAL~1\Temp\ directory. Make sure you can actually put some text in there and it's not just a 0 byte file.

Basically the purpose to do it by hand is to see if you get a more meaningful error message than might be percolating back through the layers of the installer.

I've also attached the perl58.dll to the bug so you can try Marc's advice with ease, if you like.
Comment 6 Dan Evans 2006-04-18 14:22:03 UTC
I was actually able to recreate the bug on a Windows 2000 system. The system is currently in the hands of QA for review.
Comment 7 Chris Owens 2006-04-18 16:44:24 UTC
Dan brought in the system having the problem... but now it's not having the problem. I even tried crazy things like installing software from an account that didn't have permission to install the software.

I will keep working at it.
Comment 8 Chris Owens 2006-04-24 12:18:27 UTC
Haven't been able to reproduce yet.

Dan do you have a copy of Win2K you use with that system? If I get it working it might as well be with the Win2K license you intend to use for the long term. :)

A new case of this error. (tmid 4513) User sent in two screenshots, which I chopped into three smaller ones.

1. shows the error when he tried to install. he reinstalled and it did not have the error
2. shows the path to the setup executable
3. shows the error when he tries to run Slimserver

Daniel, is this user up and running? Did he give up? I wasn't ever able to reproduce this problem. Should I come up with some more thigns to try?

Actually, he upgraded to 6.3.0 and now he's up and running.

Comment 16 Chris Owens 2006-06-12 16:45:08 UTC
Well, that's disturbing, because the installer hasn't substantially changed for 6.3.

I suspect it's like a 1 in x chance kinda thing, that the install fails.
I think the only solution we've honestly found is: uninstall and reinstall

Dan, did this guy ever get it installed?
Comment 21 Chris Owens 2006-09-08 11:10:35 UTC
Kevin notes this occurs more often if c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temp\ is cluttered.

I should test this with win32::guitest

I haven't seen this error message in quite a while, is anyone still noticing this? Dan are support customers mentioning this panic error message?
Comment 23 Dan Evans 2007-06-08 10:20:20 UTC
Nobody has seen this here in a while. Mark as WorksForMe ?
