Using Win XP SP2, Slimserver 6.2.1-5179 or 6.2.2-5226. Using the Browse Music folder on remote control (or softsqueeze), navigate to folder which contains a long list of "artist" folders: I would expect to be able to use the numeric keypad to jump to the right starting letter (2 -> "A", 2-2 -> "B" etc). While this seems to work at first, it pretty soon goes wrong. Example:

Browse Artists, for example, works as I'd expect:
"2" -> A.F.I
2-2 -> Bach
5 -> Jake Thackray
7-7 -> Queen ......etc

Browse Music Folder -> flac [this is a link] -> albums -> (this is my folder structure) shows me on the display

flac/albums (1 of 110)
Al Stewart

Now:

7 -> Paul McCartney (correct)
6 -> Mariah Carey (correct)
9 -> Whitesnake (correct)
2-2 -> Bananarama (correct)
3-3 -> Eagles (correct)
7 -> Paul Simon (not sure about this.. this is my second "P")
6 -> Matt Bianco (second "M")
9 -> Whitney Houston (second "W")
4 -> Genesis (correct)
7-7-7 -> R.E.M. (correct)
6 -> Men At Work (3rd "M")
3-3 -> Earth Wind and Fire (2nd "E")
4-4-4 -> Incubus (correct)
4-4-4 -> James Taylor (wrong!)
6-6 -> Nik Kershaw (correct)
2-2 -> Beatles (2nd "B")
5-5 -> Nik Kershaw (wrong)

... and so on. You can see it starts correctly, then goes for the Nth name in the list for the Nth selection of that letter, then gradually entropy starts to set in. After a few more of these it gets really random.

I should add that each of these artist folders has one or more subdirectories, one per album. I don't have many instances where there are enough albums by one artist for this test to be meaningful at the lower level, but I did try it on one where I have 5 albums and got some pretty random results right from the start.

My folder structure is:
/musiclib/flac/albums/<artist>/<album>/<tracks>

Is this still an issue in 6.5?

Thanks
Comment 4 KDF 2006-07-26 00:10:03 UTC
seems to be.
long list of folders, for example.
keep pressing 5 (on a list of 127)
I get items: 37,38,44,47,37,48,1,44, and sometimes the item doesn't even change. All but item 1 are at least in the J-L letter range.

Still an issue with 6.5? Yes, afraid so. I can't comment on whether the behaviour is exactly the same as it was, as I've not been brave enough to try 6.5 on my real library. But I just downloaded 6.5 8676 and tried it on a small test library and got similar behaviour. Starts off ok, then gradually entropy sets in...

the lookup item for a BMF list appears to be 'SLIM SCHEMA TRACK HASH 0XCDF0690'; according to Dumper. not truly helpful for sorting. What is odd is that some in the list come through as proper text.

still diggin...
Comment 7 Dan Sully 2006-07-27 23:16:37 UTC
Fixed in change 8710 - thanks kdf!
Comment 8 KDF 2006-07-27 23:16:48 UTC
possible fix committed at change 8710. please update and confirm. one issue remains from what I can see, eventually the first item iin the list will come up for any given number if you press enough times. I haven't gleened an exact pattern from it, but it is much improved.

Testing with 6.5 ... on the face of it this bug is now fixed - it is certainly a lot better than it was! However there is one lingering oddity when you come to folders beginning with "The". Simplifying slightly, I have folder names matching artists thus:

- Ronan Keating
- Santana
- Swing Out Sister
- T'Pau
- The Band
- The Strokes
- Tom Lehrer

Pressing "7" four times should take me to the first "S", i.e. Santana, but it doesn't - I get taken to The Strokes.

Pressing "8" once should go to the first "T", ie T'Pau, but instead I get Tom Lehrer

I assume its trying to be clever and ignoring "The" but is getting confused! It might be better to keep it simple in this context.

Currently running SlimServer Version: 6.5b3 - 9697 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252

I have noticed that when trying to navigate through my music folders, the P - Q - R - S sequence will work alright for the first 3, then take me to "The S.." instead of to folders starting with S. The only way to arrive at folders starting with S is to scroll - a lot- with the up or down buttons. Also, the "T" search will take me to the middle of the T folders, seemingly to the first T folder not starting with "The".

Still exists in 7.0.
Comment 12 Chris Owens 2007-10-16 09:31:12 UTC
If you don't have time to look at this, KDF, let me know. Dean suggests we push this off to a future version at this point.
Comment 13 KDF 2007-10-16 09:50:32 UTC
Chris, best to punt it for later. The only problem I saw was the top of list coming through every so often. I have no explanation for it and gave up after losing several entire evenings getting nowhere. The code just ends up chasing in loops when debugging.

Alan, I think I may have asked you this in the meeting this morning, but I forgot to make a note of the answer.

Would this be fixed by the 7.3 new schema work? Unaffected? Make the job of fixing it less of a nightmare than what KDF found? Thanks for any info/opinion.
Comment 16 Alan Young 2008-07-08 01:21:01 UTC
I guess that the new schema work would likely touch this, but I'm not sure.
Comment 17 Chris Owens 2008-07-08 14:36:23 UTC
All right. I'll assign it to QA for us to test in the future 7.3 nightlies as your work proceeds and we'll see what the behavior is, and update the bug or file new bugs as appropriate.
Comment 18 Michael Herger 2008-10-08 06:02:23 UTC
Anybody still seeing an issue here? Seems to be fine in 7.3.
Comment 19 James Richardson 2008-10-09 09:52:46 UTC
This appears to be fixed in 7.2.1 as well.

Marking as fixed, if anyone else still see's the issue, please reopen and add your details on how to reproduce.
Comment 20 James Richardson 2008-12-15 12:35:12 UTC
This bug has been fixed in the 7.3.0 release version of SqueezeCenter!

Please download the new version from http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html if you haven't already.

If you are still experiencing this problem, feel free to reopen the bug with your new comments and we'll have another look.
