When pausing the player from the remote, the fade in/out appears to stutter or
bounce ie it's no longer a smooth fade.  This seems to have been introduced
recently - see my comment in Bug 2314

I'm guessing that this is a side effect of my recent change to restore the volume level at the end of the 
pause fade out, so that when paused the volume control on the remote would function properly.  Which 
kind of player is audible on?

a fix has been committed for tonight's nightly build, both 6.2.1 and 6.5. 
Please give it a try and see if your issues are addressed and reopen the bug if
there are still problems.  Thanks!

The problem seems to be fixed on my system.
Mac os x, 10.4.3, imac 800mhz, sb1 wired.
