Description Kevin Pearsall 2004-04-05 16:07:08 UTC
customer requested feature...

Another query from a customer regarding iTunes music sharing:
- Do you have any plans to add DAAP (iTunes) support? Native in the client, or server-side proxy (I
guess either would do)? SlimServer is great as it is, but this would add even more flexibility.

Wow--it's GNUified:
http://www.deleet.de/projekte/daap/daapd/
http://www.deleet.de/projekte/daap/daapd/FAQ

Works along with mDNSProxyResponderPosix or an mDNS program called howl.

These guys also have a DAAP wiki:
http://www.deleet.de/projekte/daap/

Looks like all of this stuff is based on libopendaap which seems to not be GNU,
however, it does seem to have a very friendly license. For more information on
libopendaap:
http://crazney.net/programs/itunes/

Sounds like it can be used for a daap client or server...

Moving bugs that won't be immediately fixed in 6.1 release. Please review and update if this is an error
or if this bug has already been fixed. Thanks.

Since Kevin (above) requests either client or server I thought I would chime in and be more specific. I see Slimserver acting as a DAAP server as being very useful. Being able to use any DAAP client (iTunes, Rhythmbox, etc) makes it easier for me to treat my Linux-based Slimserver as the definitive source for my music info. This would enhance my Squeezebox3 in the process.

Client would also be cool too if you are doing it but really I am trying to use Slimserver more, not less.

Just voted for this bug because I also would like these two features:
 - the slimserver should share its files via daap/zeroconf.
 - But it would be awsome if the Squeeze box (or indirectly via the slimserver) could access
   to music shared by rhythmbox/Itunes/mt-daap.

Can we hope something like that in the future ?

I'm currently running multiple media servers on my system: SqueezeCenter for my SB2, Firefly DAAP server as a transcoding server (for FLAC to WAV) for iTunes and Airport Express (and hopefully someday for AppleTV), and a UPnP server for my Nokia N958GB, Nokia N770, Popcorn Hour A-110 media player, and hopefully someday for my Sonos setup (using something similar to this http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=18020 ).

It would be really nice to have a single server that supports all these protocols, and since SqueezeCenter is by far the best one out there, it would be nice if all this functionality could be rolled into it. It looks like Andy is thinking of adding UPnP functionality via a plugin (see https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5091 ), so if this feature gets added as well, then we'd have one server to rule them all :)

Dean doesn't work here any more :)

Unassigned bugs cannot have a priority.
