Bugzilla – Bug 1999
MP3 playback seems to work only for 44.1 kzh sample rate
Last modified: 2005-08-20 10:17:52 UTC
It appears that if an MP3 file is recorded with a sample rate other than 44.1 KHz (I am not referring to mp3 file bitrate here, but the sample rate of the raw PCM (WAV) file before conversion to MP3), it will not play correctly. For example, the podcasts at http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/downloads/podcast/podcast.xml are recorded at 22.05 kHz (and 32 kbps). When playing them, my squeezebox display indicates the mp3 file is playing, but there is no sound.
if you are using a squeezebox, or squeezebox2? Do you get anything on analogue outs?
It is a squeezebox (not 2). Yes, I tried it, and the analog outputs work fine. So it looks like the issue is that my Sony STR-DE675 is not capable of understanding a non 44.1 kHZ PCM S/PDIF data stream (does that seem correct to you?). Would it be possible to have a feature added to Slim Server that up samples non 44.1 kHz (or at least 44.1/(2**n) for n = 1,2,...,some_reasonable_number) mp3 (and possibly other formats, ideally all supported formats) files to 44.1 kHz before sending it to the Squeezebox? For now, I'm fine using the analog outputs. Thanks for locating the issue/solution.
this is a known issue, and complex. fyi, SB2 resamples internally to avoid this kind of problem. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 624 ***
