Bugzilla – Bug 16691
Napster "Failed to Parse" error
Last modified: 2011-01-13 06:45:02 UTC
Multiple reports that Napster is providing this error message. Example customer is running Windows Home Server, with Squeezebox Server, other customers report same symptoms using MySB.com See forum thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82994&highlight=Napster
I also get this bug. Coincidently, I also use WHS, but the problem is entirely reproducible connected to mysb.com I am based in the UK.
*** This bug has been confirmed by popular vote. ***
In addition to the "Failed to parse" errors, we also get a slew of "timed out waiting for data" messages, leading to skipped tracks in the playlist.
I am having both the "Failed to parse" and timeout errors on my new Squeezebox Touch. I have increased the timeout setting on my server which seems to reduce the occurrences a small amount. However, on weekends particularly, Napster becomes all but unplayable.

I forgot to mention that I am connecting from the US (California) and on what has been a very reliable high speed ISP for all other services.
Same for me: On weekends (mostly in the evening) napster is unusable: Skipping most of the tracks and even the menus are sometimes not being shown on first attempt.
Napster is completely unusable on my Squeezebox Boom. I've increase the timeout as people have recommended, but it still skips tracks, times out, "fails to parse" etc. It worked fine for my 30 day trial back in Oct/Nov but now that I've signed up, it's not working. I don't know if that points to a problem with authentication, or if Napster is just getting busier.
This bug is driving me up the wall, and sadly makes Napster unusable a lot of the time. Especially bad at weekends. However if use Napster site direct there is no streaming problem. SB Server: Version: 7.5.1 - r30836 @ Tue Jun 1 05:56:14 PDT 2010 Player Model: Squeezebox Classic Firmware: 130 Thanks
Could everybody please try to increase the buffer size of their players? It defaults to 3s, and some users have reported great improvements in reliability when this value was set to 15s or more. In mysb.com: Players/Network/Buffer. SBS: Settings/Advanced/Network/Buffer.
(In reply to comment #9) > Could everybody please try to increase the buffer size of their players? It > defaults to 3s, and some users have reported great improvements in reliability > when this value was set to 15s or more. > In mysb.com: Players/Network/Buffer. > SBS: Settings/Advanced/Network/Buffer. Michael, Isn't the player buffer more to do with avoiding stuttering/breaks during a track? This isn't one of the symptoms that I've experienced. It's more that the menu structure times out, and albums stop playing - i.e. it doesn't move onto the next track. Or albums don't start at all. I've increased the timeout setting in Squeezeserver/advanced/network to 15s having seen comments in other posts and this has helped but it's still incredibly sluggish.
> Isn't the player buffer more to do with avoiding stuttering/breaks during a > track? Yes, you're right: on mysb.com this won't help the menu loading, as this is managed by mysb.com. I'll see whether we can increase the timeout there. On SBS this value is being used for all kinds of timeouts accessing internet resources. > setting in Squeezeserver/advanced/network to 15s having seen comments in other > posts and this has helped but it's still incredibly sluggish. Sure, if their servers are responding slowly, then changing this value can't help it. But it will tell SBS not to give up waiting too quickly. Instead of returning you an error message quickly, it will wait a bit longer, trying to get the full menu.
(In reply to comment #11) > Yes, you're right: on mysb.com this won't help the menu loading, as this is > managed by mysb.com. I'll see whether we can increase the timeout there. > On SBS this value is being used for all kinds of timeouts accessing internet > resources. I guess I'm pretty hazy as to whether I'm using mysb.com or SBS for this... I wasn't able to enter my Napster credentials into SBS (there's a bug where it replaces your login name with your password and then fails to authenticate), so had to type it through mysb.com instead. But now SBS shows me as logged in, so I'm confused! I'll update the various timeouts and see how things go.
I'll update my timeout to 15s and see how we go. But aren't we papering over the cracks here? None of our other internet facing services are suffering this problem. As already mentioned, accessing Napster natively via it's web interface is also OK. By the way, I have my radio station buffer set at 5s. Is that OK in conjunction with the 15s timeout?
(In reply to comment #9) > SBS: Settings/Advanced/Network/Buffer. In SBS 7.1 there is "Settings/Advanced/Network/Radio Station Buffer Seconds". I presume this is the setting you are talking about? There is no general network buffer that I can see. What about "Radio Station Timeout"? Intuitively that would seem to be the more relevant setting as the problem is a failure to connect to the stream at all rather than stuttering once connected. At the moment I have that set to the default 5 seconds. I will increase this to 10 seconds and let you know if it makes a difference. My main symptom is if I choose an album on Napster it will load up the playlist but fail to play the first track, and occassionally the second, but does connect to the third. After that has finished playing it will fail to connect to the next one or two tracks before connecting to another track further down the list. From time to time I get a total failure where nothing connects at all. As pointed out by others, using the Napster web interface I get no problems at all.
For what it's worth, here is the (non)response I got from Napster "customer support": Thanks for contacting Napster Customer Support. Unfortunately we would not be able to trouble shoot the errors you are receiving through your Squeezebox device. We would only be able to trouble shoot issues on the Napster software or the Napster application for the iPhone or Android phone. Please contact Squeezebox for further assistance in this matter. Thanks for using Napster! Will E. The Napster Team
No joy with the increased buffer (15s) and radio station timeout (10s) I am afraid. Possibly slightly fewer failure to connect errors but the music is unplayable because of rebuffering every 10 seconds of music. This is at 7:00 - 8:00pm in the UK through SBS on three different albums, none current so cannot be over-demand for particular tracks. No problems with BBC iPlayer or other radio stations I have tried. Hope you find a solution soon. I have resorted to using Spotify and DS Bridge from my laptop.
Another vote. I concur with all comments here. I've increased timeout too but with little or no improvement that I can see. I can also report that last weekend the problem manifested itself as multiple and continuous "audio stream failed, skipping to next track" messages, rather than the usual "timed out waiting for data" messages. 2 months and counting - I eagerly look forward to this being resolved.
The problem is on the Napster side, with the older API that we are using. We need to finish our migration to the new API.
Andy Ref the napster developer website their most recent api update was 9 months ago and you seem to be telling us that Logitech has not yet migrated? Can you advise when this might be closed off and for future changes should users be concerned about the amount of time Logitech has taken to react to this update?
> Ref the napster developer website their most recent api update was 9 months ago > and you seem to be telling us that Logitech has not yet migrated? I started migrating to the new Napster API several months ago. Until we hit the spots in their latest API which have not been implemented yet. And their latest API (though we received new documentation a few weeks ago) is still incomplete. Eg. no way to browse your playlists. We didn't want to release a feature limited "new" version of the service integration.
> We didn't want to release a feature limited "new" version of the service integration. That said I'm working on filling as many holes as possible right now. We eventually might have no choice about releasing an incomplete new version or not.
Only for your information. I have tested this NapsterProblem with my Noxon and also with a lent Sonos System. This Problem exists on all other Systems!! At the Peak Times at Weekend it is impossible to use the paid Napster Music Flatrate. I am sure that this is not an Logitech, Sonos or Noxon Problem. Napsters Bandwith is the Problem !!! They are using different Gateways for the Napster Desktop Software which are having the needed Bandwith. So it looks like that Napster has no Problem. I`ve already cancelled my account until Napster solves this Bandwith Problems. Regards AxelB
It's Saturday afternoon, and (surprise!) Napster is completely unusable on my Squeezebox. I have the timeout and radio buffer settings all to maximum, but it's not helping. With regard to some of the previous posts, yes, I've had this problem on other devices. However, my guess is that they, too, are using the "old" API that Michael mentioned. One reason I bought my Squeezebox was because I found Napster unplayable on my Samsung Blu-Ray player which has a Napster applet. It became clear to me that Samsung had little incentive to fix the problem as the Napster applet wasn't really core to the device, and it was unclear whether Napster or Samsung was responsible for the actual code of the applet. My hope was/is that the Squeezebox people will actually work to fix this with Napster as playing music from online services like Napster is one of the things Squeezeboxes are supposed to be all about. Anyway, I am frustrated. Limited functionality (while not great) is definitely an improvement over something that doesn't work at all....
Does the latest release Version: 7.5.2 - r31632 @ Mon Dec 13 13:06:02 PST 2010 provide a fix for this, does anyone know? or improvements? Thanks Nick
> Does the latest release > Version: 7.5.2 - r31632 @ Mon Dec 13 13:06:02 PST 2010 > provide a fix for this, does anyone know? Unfortunately no. We'll have to update mysb.com which hopefully will happen really early next year. Did anybody try test.mysqueezebox.com?
This has been an ongoing problem for quite some time. It has made Napster unusable. I have cancelled my membership until it's been resolved. Like other people, I also get a loads of "timed out waiting for data" messages, leading to skipped tracks in the playlist.
Just to add to the original error, I'm now not even able to connect to Napster: "There was an error loading the remote feed for Napster: (504 Gateway Time-out)" Assume its just a symptom of the underlying problem identified here and an even busier internet today. Happy Christmas. And looking forward to the new year fix...
having the same problem here (504 gateway timeout). Have reinstalled latest version of ReadyNAS Duo operating system, have reinstalled latest version of squeezebox server, problem persists: on SB touch and on SB radio. Sometimes it can find a track or 2, but then at least 90% of the tracks are skipped due to timeout problems. Santa brought the new SB Radio, but we do not "frohlocken" due to these Napster problems... Stefan
Also experiencing this problem on both Windows Home Media Server and my main home Windows server.....increased the network buffer which seems to limit the impact of the bug but it's still there intermittently. As others have commented this is one of the major uses that I have for both SB and Napster....it's a real pain if they don't work well together.
This has been a problem for me for over a year. I've actually replaced my Duet 3 times. Good to have found some like minded individuals who are unfortunately suffering from the same ridiculous Napster/Squeezebox issues!! Come on and get it sorted!!!
I'm experiencing the same issue. napster was a huge selling point for me of having this radio. Please fix soon!
> Did anybody try test.mysqueezebox.com? How does one do that?
This is what Michael told in the forum in order to switch to test.mysqueezebox.com: in Windows run "telnet yournas 9090", where you replace "yournas" with your server's address. In the black, empty window you get, type "pref use_sn_test 1" and press enter. Then shut down and restart your SBS. Additionally you'll have to create/check your mysb.com account on http://test.mysqueezebox.com But please be aware that there are several bugs. After a short time of testing i experienced: - Being not able to add new albums to my napster library - My napster library only contained about 10% of the albums my original napster library consists of - I didn't get any album covers, but "covers" while browsing artists?! - some other minor things BUT: It's lightning fast and has some new napster features in it...

Hi there. I'm a bit of a techno amateur and can't seem to follow Michael's instructions. I'm on Windows 7 but I'm not sure how/where to run "telnet yournas 9090". Perhaps you could help me? Many thanks

So does that mean that will not need to update our squeezebox server software on our NAS, just waiting for an update of mysb.com? Thanks Stefan
> Did anybody try test.mysqueezebox.com? Wow - what an improvement! Looking forward to this being rolled into the full mysb.com release.
Hi: Unfortunately, switching to test.mysqueezebox.com (using the procedure described above) does not help in my case. Napster does respond quickly to my queries and I can see the new features that were mentioned above, but the tracks fail to play. In most cases, when I try to launch a track, Napster tells me that that track is only available for download but that I can hear the first 30 seconds. Then the system repeatedly attempts to start playing these 30 seconds but keeps timing out. No luck! Could the difference be due to the fact I am in Canada? -- Pierre

I am configuring that with a laptop with Windows XP. This is what I have done: 1. On my laptop I have opened the DOS prompt window to get a command line. I am doing this with the shortcut Windows key + "R". You can also find that under Start - Ausführen (German Windows, "Ausführen" should be something like "Run" on english versions). 2. I am getting a DOS box where I type the following command: telnet 192.168.2.205 9090 You should swap the IP 192.168.2.205 to the IP where your squeezebox server is running (actually the IP address of the NAS server you're using). 3. I am getting a black window where I typ the following: pref use_sn_test 1 and press Enter. I was not able to see what I was typing, but obviously the system accepted it. 4. I am closing down the black window (by mouse click top right) 5. I am entering the adminitration page of my NAS server to shut down the squeezebox streaming service. Afterwards I am restarting it again. 6. I am running http://test.mysqueezebox.com in a regular browser, create a new account there (with mail address + password as in the live environment). I also add / install Napster within that page. 7. I am starting my Logitech squeezebox radio, menu item "my applications" (or similar? in German it's: "Meine Anwendungen"), then start Napster and enjoy the speed :) I you need further assistance, please let me know. Regards Stefan
thanks thant fix works for me. I am just wondering how we turn off using the test site when the new release is officially 'released' also when will that be?
(In reply to comment #42) > thanks thant fix works for me. > > I am just wondering how we turn off using the test site when the new release is > officially 'released' also when will that be? I guess this could be done by using the 0 instead of the 1 in this string: pref use_sn_test 1 Stefan
Yes, in order to switch back to mysqueezebox.com just use pref use_sn_test 0 within the procedure described.
Hi Stefan Thank you very much for taking the time out to explain that to me! Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for my system. Back to the drawing board I think! All the best Jerry

We'll have to update mysb.com which hopefully will happen > really early next year. > > Did anybody try test.mysqueezebox.com? Michael, I've tried test.mysqueezebox.com over the past 24 hours or so. I am running a local SBS, and set it to use the test.mysb.com as per your instructions in the forum. Napster is now working for me, though with a few significant limitations (see below). But the menus are reasonably responsive and tracks load pretty fast. 1. The biggest limitation is that in "My Napster", each of the browse lists (Artists, Albums, Playlists, Tracks) appears to be limited to 50 entries. Get to the 50th entry and then it loops around (if using wheel on Boom or Radio). 2. Great to see the new API has an "Albums" browse at all. But the albums appear to be defined as unique Album / Artist elements. So a compilation album is listed as a separate album however many times there are different artists or artist combinations on it, up to the total number of tracks. In my case my 2 or 3 "A Very Special Christmas" compilations end up using the entire 50 album (current) limit. Napster's own website appears to handle compilations in the same unhelpful way, so maybe there's nothing you can do about it at this time. The other stuff in the menus seems to be working okay (Top 100s, New Releases, Napster Radio, etc). Thanks for your work on this. -K
Michael Please could you give some advise on this. I am running sb server on windows 6 and can't seem to implement the test site as per you suggestions. Your help is much appreciated. Jerry
(In reply to comment #45) > Hi Stefan > > Thank you very much for taking the time out to explain that to me! > Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for my system. > > Back to the drawing board I think! > > All the best > > Jerry Hmm, that result, combined with your earlier remark in comment #30 that this has been a problem for you for over a year (to the point where you actually replaced your Duets) suggests to me that you are encountering a different problem. Either way you won't get your particular problem solved until either (a) you can connect to test.mysb.com or (b) the fix to the API gets pushed out in 2011. Were you able to use test.mysb.com successfully for non-Napster streams?
I'm also having problems with test.mysqueezebox.com Have been trying it off and on today. I can navigate into my Napster account and pull up my playlists, but when I try to play them I continually get errors like this (from my SBS server log): [10-12-29 15:19:38.9973] Slim::Player::Song::open (465) Warning: stream failed to open [napster://22035231.wma]. I have about 10 playlists at the moment, none of them will play. Oddly, I *can* play Napster's "Radio" stations and their other premade lists. Just cannot play anything that I actually want to listen to. These failed streams in Napster happen within 5 seconds of attempting to start a track, even though my server settings have radio timeout set to 60 seconds and radio buffer is set to 15 seconds. I have no problems playing Pandora streams using the test setup.
Customers are experiencing 504 Bad Gateway errors with Napster.
I really would like to roll out our test Napster code to production, missing features is better than not working at all. Unfortunately I'd be facing the wrath of the QA team if I did that...

(In reply to comment #51) > I really would like to roll out our test Napster code to production, missing > features is better than not working at all. FYI I have reconfigured my server as per the instructions to load the test.mysqueezebox. Created a new user account and added my Napster app. All fine on the web server end and can access Napster. However on my Squeezebox Classic, when I tried to connect to mysqueezebox.com, it asked for an email address. Entered this but it timed out. However, the box is connected to test.mysqueezebox as it shows in the 'Players' tab. In this state however, I am unable to use the Squeezebox Classic via the remote to do anything on it. The screen just goes blank. It wont allow me to disconnect and get back to my home server to access my music. Have to release it from the web interface Player setting options. Nick

Despite an error 500 Internal Server Error, it has now added my account and I'm seeing the test.squeezebox web site. Can anyone remind me whether this has any impact on the Napster bug! I've forgotten.
Is there any way to use test.mysqueezebox.com without setting up a local squeezebox server first? I have already setup ssh access to the squeezebox radio.
I've pushed out the beta Napster v2 code to production, this should take care of most of the issues. Some features may be missing, hopefully Napster will implement those soon and we'll fill in the holes.
I'd also ask anyone who manually switched to the test network to please move back to production. We don't worry about breaking things in test and you will very likely experience problems from time to time.
I'm having the same problems that I had with the test version. Now I'm having them on the "production" side. In more detail, this is what I'm seeing: I have several albums saved to personal playlists. If I try to play any of my playlists, I get continual errors that look like this: [10-12-30 17:19:38.9973] Slim::Player::Song::open (465) Warning: stream failed to open [napster://22035231.wma] Odd thing is, if I "search" for those same albums and attempt to play them from the search results page, I have no problems. Everything goes along fine. Any idea why my saved playlists won't play? Is anyone else having a similar problem? While I sort of work around the problem by searching for music from my playlists from within my Squeezebox web interface, it's a pain as I've saved a bunch of music to these playlists....
Well now my workaround isn't working either. When I play an album after searching for one, it plays only a few tracks from the album. It skips all the others saying that it can't resolve these napster://whatever links. The Napster app on my blu-ray player is playing these fine right now. So Napster appears to still be broken for me. I can't play my playlists (it skips all the tracks saying it cannot resolve the napster://whatever links) and with albums that I find through the search function, only a few of the tracks are playing, the others give this cannot resolve error. I get these errors when I am connected to my Squeezebox server on my Windows 7 PC and when I connect directly to mysqueezebox.com. Rather frustrated right now....
Please try again, it may have been a cache issue.
(In reply to comment #61) > Please try again, it may have been a cache issue. Nope. Still won't work. I'm trying playlists with music I have not attempted to play, just to make sure I'm not pulling up anything that might be cached. Still, when I try to play one of these new playlists, I get a cannot resolve napster://anumber.wma error on the server log. My Touch player gives a slightly different error on its screen saying "Problem: Can't connect to server for: napster://anumber.wma" I get a similar error from my Boom. Also, as I mentioned, I get the same errors sporadically when I try to play an album that I have not previously played. It will play a track or two, then error several, then play a track, etc. To check for internet connectivity problems, I have tried all other forms of streaming music (Pandora, internet radio stations, Live365, Last.fm). All play without a hitch. Also, my blu-ray player which is attached to the same home network is playing Napster fine (which is a bit strange since usually its the blu-ray player that is all buggy and won't play Napster). My internet connectivity is generally extremely reliable anyway so I'm really unconvinced that it's the ISP that's the problem. Oh, and I got these exact same errors yesterday when I was using the test squeezebox setting on my home server. And, like I said, identical problems when I am connected to either my home Squeezebox server or to mysqueezebox.com
I just received the following email from Napster. Is there some other problem going on?! Dear Peter, We are aware that a number of our customers have been experiencing difficulties accessing Napster through Sonos and Logitech devices during this holiday season. These recent issues are below the standard of quality and reliability that we expect for our service, and we are working diligently with our partners to solve these issues as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we apologize for the inconvenience and want to thank you for your continued patience by adding a free month of service to your subscription. No action is needed for you to take advantage of this complimentary extension, it will take effect automatically. We appreciate your continued patience while we make the necessary changes, and are looking forward to providing an improved service experience as soon as possible for our customers using Napster through Sonos and Logitech devices. Thank you for your understanding, and as always, thanks for listening. - Your friends at Napster
(In reply to comment #63) > I just received the following email from Napster. Is there some other problem > going on?! No, it's the same one. Why do you think otherwise?
I appreciate the sentiment in wanting to get this one closed off quickly, but I'm afraid Napster is still very broken for me. In fact it's even worse than before. I'll get one or two tracks to play in an album, and the remainder get skipped.
Agreed - I'm not sure why bug 16691 has been closed unless my experiences are unique. In no way or form can I describe the released "fix" as an improvement. If anything Napster is now even worse than it was (wouldn’t have believed that could be possible) with a plethora of errors: The old favourite “timed out waiting for data” is still around but a lot less regularly The new favourite is “Audio stream failed – skipping to next track” – continuously and incessantly “connect timed out” is another new error And lastly “502 bad gateway” is yet another frequently reported error And my Napster library has shrunk to the first 50 artists With persistence (a lot more required than before the “fix” was implemented), tracks can still be played by repeating the command to play. For me a great disappointment. Any comment or advice?
Decided yesterday that enough is enough and got rid of the Squeezebox Duet and Radio. To be honest, I've not had any real decent performance from either of them since day one. Have paid the extra and opted for a Sonos system using Spotify. Music quality and delivery speed leagues ahead of what I've had to endure from Logitech/Napster crap. I'll never knowingly buy anything from Logitech again. Customer service experience is next to useless too!! They'd better just get it sorted or they'll lose more customers - that's just how it works Logitech!! Anyway guys good luck and all your sakes I hope this ridiculous problem is sorted for you - I have a feeling it'll be some time!!
To be honest, I've been considering doing the same. However I dread trying to get my investment in my Squeezeboxes back. THIS BUG IS NOT FIXED. There are several people on this thread for whom the "fix" has broken Napster completely (including myself). A fix may be in placed but it is not fixed. I can't play all napster tracks. Some will play but others will only go until about the six second mark and restart. Definitely not fixed
Another voice added to those who believe the bug is not fixed, or at best, is replaced by a fix with issues. Like others have commented, I can access the Napster app but trying to listen to an album has not been possible for the past few days. The system will play the first few tracks (generally 4 tracks, all the way through) often with timing gaps between tracks and then tends to stop paying, moving the 'now playing' track to be the final track of the album. I also have an issue with the 'my library' since the 'fix'. Most of the items in my pre-fix library have disappeared. I really want to continue using the Napster/Logitech system and have previously recommended the system to family and friends. I'm currently finding to difficult to justify to myself why I should continue with it, let alone encourage others to start investing in it.
Yeah you guys are right, it's better but not great. We'll definitely keep working on it with Napster.
(In reply to comment #71) > Yeah you guys are right, it's better but not great. We'll definitely keep > working on it with Napster. Thank you!
Andy I for one cannot agree. It's NOT better - the Napster interface is now worse than before the "fix". Please see my comments in earlier response. I think it's time Logitech and Napster made a firm commitment to it's client base - how much longer should we expect to wait to have this resolved?
Thanks Andy.
@Andy: Hopefully you meant it like a joke. Yes it's better than getting only a "504 error", but everything else is only an alpha version and far away from a beta and lightyears from a production version! Don't you think that issues like the mentioned above and again below aren't elementary for a service like Napster? - "my library" using squeezeboxes just contains 10% of my library! How should i use Napster without getting access to my full library? - I'm not able to add albums to the "my library" using the squeezeboxes anymore (there is simple no menu entry for it). Don't you think that is an elementary thing using services like Napster? For me it's like logitech wants me to choose between pest and cholera. So which one would you call "better" to choose?
I completely agree with you, but you should understand most of those problems are on the Napster side. If they don't provide a way to get data for a certain menu, there isn't much we can do.
I've opened a couple of new bugs to track issues with the new implementation: > - "my library" using squeezeboxes just contains 10% of my library! How should i > use Napster without getting access to my full library? https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16758 > - I'm not able to add albums to the "my library" using the squeezeboxes anymore > (there is simple no menu entry for it). https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16759 If there are more issues, please add separate bugs for these. Thanks!
@Andy: Logitech seems to me big enough in order to know how to exert pressure on other companies in order to satisfy their own customers ;-) @Michael: Once again thanks for opening these bugs! But the statement of Andy gives not much hope that Napster will ever work as known in the past. This would mean for us european Napster users that we will have to leave the squeezebox universe, because there is no alternative...
A few other issues, some I believe were already mentioned but I don't think if there is a 'bug' for them 1. Unable to play some songs from "My Playlists". Example, I have a Shinedown song that when I play from a playlist, does nothing but display the Napster symbol. I can search this song out and play within Napster itself 2. Unable to play an entire album. A few songs in the app will just skip to the end. 3. It also seems that some songs just don't play. For example, if I in the general Napster catalog to Jimmy Eat World and the album Static Prevails and try and play Rockstar, it doesn't work.
I would ditto Dan from comment 79. The biggest problems I'm having are: 1. Unable to play anything in My Playlists. Just get Napster server errors. 2. If I search for and play an album, the first few tracks play, but after that it skips the rest of the album giving similar server errors. Peter
As an example of the search and play an album issue, I tried this: Search for "Korngold violin" In the search results I get back, the first album is the one I want to hear (James Ehnes playing the Korngold, Barber and Walten violin concertos). So, I ask it to play the Ehnes album. Then, the player skips the first track, plays the second track (the second movement of the Korngold), then skips until the sixth track (third movement of the Barber) which it plays.
Oh, and I should mention *all* the tracks of that James Ehnes album play when I use either my Samsung blu-ray player's Napster app or my web browser....

For example, if I in the > general Napster catalog to Jimmy Eat World and the album Static Prevails and > try and play Rockstar, it doesn't work. Pleasde remember that I also mentioned that I had an issue which is much more severe than all the other ones that have been mentioned thus far. When I try to use Napster on test.squeezebox.com, the menus appear more or less OK but I can get almost nothing to play. Most tracks appear to me with the mention: [Track is available for download only. Playing 30s preview.] And when I try to play those previews they don't work anyway: the player keeps trying for a while then skips to the next track. I have no issues using Napster through the Napster application. When I use the normal (nontest) squeezebox.com server, I have the same issues as most other people. At least I does work occasionally. Not so for me with the test server. Could I be experiencing that different behavior because I am located in Canada? Could you please try to look into my problem? Thanks in advance, -- Pierre
I have the same error on my Sqeezebox Touch when I try to play my own playlists. [10-12-29 15:19:38.9973] Slim::Player::Song::open (465) Warning: stream failed to open [napster://22035231.wma]. What I noticed is that wehn I search the song in Naspter again and add to the Playlist, suddenly both Songs works fine. I use the sqeezeserver on the Touch and this is the most servere problem that I have. Sometimes I get the error message that napster is down for maintainance, when trying to play a searched song.
(In reply to comment #57) > I've pushed out the beta Napster v2 code to production, this should take care > of most of the issues. Hi Andy: Sorry: I had missed that message of yours, so I had not realized that Napster v2 was now on the official Squeezebox.com server. For me, this makes Napster even more useless than before. As I mentioned in previous messages, in that new version almost all Napster tracks are now appearing to me with the mention "Only available for download" and refuse to play. I only have that problem when I use Napster through squeezebox applications: everything is OK when I use the Napster application directly. Thanks in advance for looking into that problem quickly. Cheers, -- Pierre Isabelle, Wakefield, QC, Canada
I've rolled out some playback fixes, can everyone please retry things that were failing?
Just to avoid misunderstandings: Only playback fixes, no fixes for menus etc.? Regarding playback issues: While receiving your message my sb classic showed a timeout error, but music playback continued without any gap.
Fixed a few more things: Non-streamable 30s previews work correctly now Napster Radio fixed What issues are there with the menus? Other than that they are different?
(In reply to comment #88) > What issues are there with the menus? Other than that they are different? One big problem is that the "My Napster" sub-menus (Artists, Albums, Tracks, etc) only show the first 50 entries. This is especially a problem on album browsing with compilations, since Napster appears to consider each unique album/artist combination to be a separate album. So it lists a single compilation album as 10-20 different albums of the same name. Gets you up to 50 pretty fast. And of course, the limit of 50 shouldn't be there anyway.
Hi Andy Stuff seems to be playing, which is great. Menus: there is no way to add and remove stuff to/from your library - that needs reinstating. Also, the 50 browse limit as already mentioned, means i dont currently have my full library available. There also seems to be a very high proportion of artwork missing at the moment. Relatedto recent issues??
> Menus: there is no way to add and remove stuff to/from your library - that > needs reinstating. > > Also, the 50 browse limit as already mentioned, means i dont currently have my > full library available. Please see comment #77: these are now handled in their own bug reports.
Within the last 5 minutes: Two times a track suddenly stopped, then was skipped and the next track began to play
I'm considering this fixed for real now.
(In reply to comment #93) > I'm considering this fixed for real now. Andy, can you have people use it for a few days before considering it closed? I for one am working and can't do any testing out.
I just wrote about playback problems... so, how do you come to the conclusion that it is fixed?
I marked it fixed because everything I have tested is working well. If you have problems, please provide a specific album/track title. Just saying "I had a track stop playing" is not helpful.
Hi Andy, I believe Comment 81 provided an example. In addition, I'm sure many people can't do much at work. I don't see the rush in closing the bug immediately. Why not leave it open a couple of days and let people continue using the application and see what happens? It doesn't appear that outside of you, people are testing the code to make sure it works before production. Typically that happens from what I've seen.
Fixed means the person it's assigned to believes the problem is fixed. If not, it will get reopened.
FYI I have a number of tracks coming from previously configured Napster playlist that are only playing 30s. ie The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver [Track is available for download only. Playing 30s preview.] This and all other tracks on the album by Elbow The Seldom Seen Kid. Ditto Belle and Sebastian - album 'If you're feeling sinister'. I deleted the B&S tracks and then added them again direct from SBS and they were all OK. Not sure if this is the bug you were discussing earlier or Napster changing the rights or something. Regards Nick
@Andy: Regarding my comment "track skipped": I would have given you the specific title/album if the issue would have been specific to a decent title/album. Second time i tried to play the album the skipping happened on a different track. I would love to give you more info, but i do not know how. Most issues usually arise while using the squeezeboxes for a longer time than on typical test scenarios. So please give you and us some more time to test it in order to avoid frustration. Thanks in advance!
It's hard to be specific about album and tracks as it seems to be totally random. One time an album will play seamlessly the next tracks will skip. When the skipped tracks are reselected they then play ok. Other times tracks will start for a few seconds then pause for a moment then start playing again. There's no consistency. It's definitely improved because something is better than nothing which was the case before but it's still far from fixed.

Napster clips are now playing OK on my squeezebox. This is clearly a progress. But why is squeezenetwork systematically preventing me from playing more than a 30 sec clip of any Napster track? I paid my Napster subscription OK and I do not have that problem when I use the Napster application. Please help me! -- Pierre
Well, 30s previews play if a particular track is blocked from being streamed in your country.
Hi Andy, So far so good. Just tried playing music from "My Playlists", and it's actually playing now. Before it skipped all these with server errors. I'll let you know if things run into trouble as I play some more.... Peter
All right. I seem to be having success playing my playlists. I'm well into my second playlist and have not yet had a track skipped. Before, I couldn't play my playlists at all (it would skip all tracks). When I played albums before, it would play a few tracks, then skip a bunch. So far no skipped tracks. Admittedly, I haven't played much yet, but so far this is very good. Ok, here's something perhaps a bit picky. One thing I like to do while listening to music on Squeezebox is to prepare new playlists from my PC on Napster's site. Then, play them. However, it appears that the Squeezebox interface loads and caches the list of playlists. I have added and removed some playlists while listening this afternoon, however the changes are not being reflected on my Squeezebox. I have no idea how often the Squeezebox server reloads the list of playlists, etc., or if there is a way to make it do so. Any idea how that mechanism works? Is there a way to force a reload of playlists? As I said, this a bit picky. I am thrilled that I am so far playing Napster at all....
I've disabled caching of the library menus, so that should help with that problem I think.
the latest update is a marked improvement...I can now view my full library and can stream tracks....great job...
Again, thanks, Andy! I'm playing Napster great now. The playlist list seems to still get cached, but I can work around that.
(In reply to comment #103) > Well, 30s previews play if a particular track is blocked from being streamed in > your country. Hi Andy: Thanks for your response, but clearly the problem is NOT what you are pointing out here. When I use the Napster native interface, all tracks are fully available for streaming. I have yet to see a single track that comes with the message "available for download only". But when I try to access Napster through the Squeezebox interface, virtually ALL tracks suddenly become available for download only. Thus, there is definitely something wrong with the Logitech/Squeezebox interface to Napster. I hope you will be able to fix that very soon. Thanks for your attention. -- Pierre
Pierre: Can you give me some specific examples of albums/tracks that are having this problem?
(In reply to comment #110) > Pierre: Can you give me some specific examples of albums/tracks that are having > this problem? Hi again: Yes, it is easy to provide examples. Suppose I navigate to "napster > Top 100's > Albums", then system displays a bunch of albums. When I click on one of them, in most cases I am getting the "failed analysis" message. However, in a few cases, such as the second album ("Doo-Wops & the Hooligans by Bruno Mars") I am rather getting the problem I was reporting to you: the list of tracks is displayed but all track titles are annotated with the mention "Track is available for download only" and will only play for the first 30 seconds. The same album plays without any restriction in my Napster application. Second example. In Napster search I type "Stacey Kent". Then I click on the first picture in the result (Stacey Kent as sole artist). Then the system displays a bunch of pictures/options. In the first 4 choices, the artwork is missing. The fifth choice has the artwork OK, that of the album entitled "Collection III". I click on that album and then I see all the individual tracks. Each track has the mention "Track is available for download only" and will only play for a max of 30 seconds. The same happens with practically every album I try to listen to. Again: I have no such problem with the Napster standard client. Thanks again, -- Pierre
(In reply to comment #113) Sorry for the duplicates: not so sure what went wrong. --- Pierre
Everything is much better for me. I do have issues where an album is missing and track listing are incomplete. For example, searching for Jimmy Eat World, the list of albums is missing "Stay On My Side Tonight" which is available in Napster. In addition, if I select Tracks, it only provides a listing of 10 tracks when there are many, many more in Napster. The actual playing of playlists, songs, albums seems is much better though
Actually, I believe both the track and album listings are limited to 10 items each. I saw this also fro Pink Floyd as well
Yesterday I very nearly joined the ranks of happy and elated SBS / Napster users after experiencing an almost fault free few hours of music streaming. However today 6th Jan the service is almost unusable again with continuous errors: • Connect timed out – resource temporarily unavailable • Connect timed out • Audio stream failed – skipping to next track. Constantly and persistently Also many artists have disappeared from my Napster library and support for adding artists to my library appears to have disappeared. Lastly, searches list a partial result of only 10 artists or albums. Not a happy bunny.
Napster appears to be having problems today. I am currently unable to even pull up their web page in a browser. I suspect the repeated timeouts I'm getting when attempting to play them right now is their issue (which sucks as I've had pretty bad customer support experiences with them)....
(In reply to comment #114) > (In reply to comment #113) > > Sorry for the duplicates: not so sure what went wrong. > > --- Pierre Hi Andy: I know that you are very busy, but please consider that your recent changes to the Squeezenetwork Napster interface made things far worse for me: Napster has become completely unusable, here. All tracks have suddenly become "for download only" as a result of some change you made. This is an issue with Squeezenetwork, not with Napster. Please see my previous messages for detailed examples of the problems I am experiencing now. Hope you can do something about that quickly, now. Thanks for your attention, - Pierre

The "Doo-Wops & the Hooligans by Bruno Mars" album played just fine on my SB. Well, after 4 tracks went all the way through without interruption I stopped the test. On the Stacey Kent "Collection III" there are 5 tracks out of 13 that are marked for 30 second sample only. I played two of those not marked sample-only and they played fine. Btw, the missing artwork is probably because those aren't SK's albums, but rather they are "Tracks", "Related Artists" and "Create 'Stacey Kent' Mix". Not sure what album art you would want for that. This is in the US. Could it be the streaming rights are different in CA? -K
Also, I just checked on the Napster web application, and it shows the exact same 5 tracks on "Collection III" as being 30 second samples only.
(In reply to comment #121) > Also, I just checked on the Napster web application, and it shows the exact > same 5 tracks on "Collection III" as being 30 second samples only. Ken: This is definitely a Squeezenetwork issue, not a Napster issue because all tracks are available and play perfectly in the Napster native application while almost no tracks are available through my Squeezebox interface. -- Pierre
(In reply to comment #122) > This is definitely a Squeezenetwork issue, not a Napster issue because all > tracks are available and play perfectly in the Napster native application while > almost no tracks are available through my Squeezebox interface. May I suggest that you are not the only user who matters? Those 5 tracks are _not_ available for me. mysb.com is showing me the exact same thing that napster.com is showing. So it's more subtle than "definitely a SN issue, not a Napster issue". As noted previously, differences in licensing between US and CA may have something to do with it.
(In reply to comment #98) > Fixed means the person it's assigned to believes the problem is fixed. If not, > it will get reopened. Hi Andy, Thanks for your efforts on this, but I'm afraid I have to add my voice to those saying that this is still not fixed. I still often can't get through an album/playlist without tracks skipping or playback stopping altogether. Tonight's frustrations was: I wanted to listen to Ash - A-Z vol 1. I search for Ash and it only shows the first 10 "albums", which doesn't include the one I wanted. So I opt to listen to A-Z vol 2 instead. It tries the first track, fails, tries the second, again fails, and then hangs there. This is repeatable on my system. Napster on-line shows all of the albums and plays fine. Also tonight, Billy Cyro - Only Revolutions stopped mid album (half way through Many of Horror). I also got two "Failed to parse" errors tonight although I'm afraid I can't remember what I was trying to listen to.
Agreed with Chris nowhere near being fixed - heaps of "audio stream failed-skipping to next track" messages. Napster is stll basically unusable.
I must agree as well. Although at times, things seem to run smoothly; I will suddenly start getting skipped tracks after apparent timeouts. I wonder if this, again, is an issue on Napster's side. I see very similar (but more frequent) behavior using the Napster app on my blu-ray player. Clearly, the interface they provide to web browsers is much more reliable. It's very frustrating that Napster advertises on their site that they plan on Logitech, Sonos, and various blu-ray devices, but their support for these seems lacking.
Hi Ken: > May I suggest that you are not the only user who matters? Those 5 tracks are > _not_ available for me. mysb.com is showing me the exact same thing that > napster.com is showing. So it's more subtle than "definitely a SN issue, not a > Napster issue". As noted previously, differences in licensing between US and CA > may have something to do with it. Not sure how I managed to convey that I did not care about other members from our community. Perhaps it is a result of my imperfect command of English? Please be assured that I do care about our community. I simply wanted to report a very severe problem that I happen to have over and above all those that have been reported by other people. As I understand it, I am the first user to report that problem, I would be surprised if I was alone in experiencing it. I am using the qualification "severe problem" because for me ALMOST ALL Naspster tracks are currently available "for download only". In my response to Andy, I just picked two random examples for the sake of concreteness. In the case of Stacey Kent, all tracks from Collection III are affected, not just five of them. And this is no different from any other Stacey Kent album: there is no a single track from her that I can stream. And in turn, this no different from most other artists: I am having a hard time finding any Napster track at all that I can stream for more than 30 seconds. I agree that that this situation may be linked to the fact that I am in Canada. The reason I am saying this is not a Napster issue is that I do not have that problem at all in the Napster native application: all tracks are perfectly streamable for me there, including all 13 tracks from Stacey Kent's Collection III album. Have a nice day, -- Pierre
Pierre, je n'ai pas dit que vous étiez insensible. Plutôt que vous n'étiez pas approcher le bug très analytique. Looking at Michael H's recent comments on bug 16758 (https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16758) it appears that country-specificity on the Napster end (different web apps, potentially different APIs) may be a major source of the problems. And, for example, why you and I see completely different things from _both_ the Napster site and the SB app. Courage, -K
Would some Canadian user mind to share his Napster credentials with me? We unfortunately only got US accounts to test with. Having a CA account would greatly help us understand the issue. Thanks in advance!
(In reply to comment #129) > Would some Canadian user mind to share his Napster credentials with me? We > unfortunately only got US accounts to test with. Having a CA account would > greatly help us understand the issue. Thanks in advance! Hello Michael: Yes, I can do that. Please e-mail me privately: Pierre.Isabelle@nrc.ca -- Pierre p.s. as of this morning it looks as if Napster's behavior has changed slightly. Specifically, many of the individual tracks are no longer explicitly marked as "For download only". However those tracks do not appear to play any better than before. Most often they refuse to start: the system tries to load them for 3-5 seconds and then gives up. And when the tracks manage to start, they only play for the first 30 seconds. Random example: Stacey Kent's first listed track under the "Tracks" item (namely, "The Gentle Rain"). I just managed to start it but it only played the first 30 seconds. On the other hand, when I clicked on Stacey's album "Breakfast on the Morning Train" the system reported an "Analysis failure"; and when I clicked on her album "In love again", individual tracks were as before marked as "For download only".
(In reply to comment #130) I'm in the US and noticed the issue with the tracks starting for a few seconds and not playing. I was playing "Bleed American" by Jimmy Eat World. A couple of tracks started and about 5 seconds in moved on. Also, I still have the issue with only the first 10 tracks and albums appearing under and artists profile. There is no way to get to additional tracks or albums without specifically searching for them > (In reply to comment #129) > > Would some Canadian user mind to share his Napster credentials with me?
