Description Trevor F. 2010-05-13 12:49:10 UTC
This is a bug report to condense reports that the Alarm feature of the Squeezebox Radio is not working. I will be referring customers to this bug report to add their own reports as nessicarry. This is in response to the growing number of Alarm concerns since 7.5.0

Below is a list of Incident Reports with Alarm concerns.

Trevor - please note that we (devs) don't have access to the incident reports. Listing the IDs doesn't help.

OTOH the good news is that most of these issues might be duplicates of others we've been busy fixing recently. You should see an improvement with the upcoming 7.5.1 and related mysb.com changes.

The radio does not hold the alarm feature, It does not snooze, it turns off and on randomly even before the set time has expired. The customer set the alarm for 1 minute and the radio randomly checked itself into the time display and he had to reset it while on call.

He set the Alarm back on for 1 min and the radio turned itself automatically although the set alarm function did get executed after that 1 minute time.

The radio alarm does not snooze, When performed a Factory reset works for a week's time and then the problems surface again.

The Radio is in the current FW of 7.5.0

Is it reasonable to close this report now, given the set of Alarm fixes included in 7.5.1?
Comment 7 trinkner 2010-09-14 14:34:24 UTC
I use a Squeezebox Radio 7.5.1 with the latest update. Although the alarm does seem to go off at the correct time, it turns off the radio stream after just a few seconds of playback. The alarm should trigger the station to stream for an indefinite time, to allow the user to listen to the stream while waking up, like a standard clock radio.

The radio does trigger the correct stream, at the right time, but then turns off after about 10 seconds.

I have only one alarm configured in my radio's setup. It's configured to repeat M, T, W, R, F. It's set to wake at 5:00 AM to a radio station in My Favorites. I have "repeat all alarms" checked to on. The alarm is enabled.

Perhaps the alarm algorithm sounds the alarm, and then turns off the stream in preparation to await another alarm?

I'd suggest:

1. If the alarm is a stream, leave it playing until the user turns it off or the track finishes (if it's single tune, not a streamed station).

2. If a second alarm triggers while a first alarm is playing, shift to the second alarm which should interrupt the previously triggered stream.

3. Ideal (but requires a UI change, too): give the user a configurable option to set the duration of the alarm (e.g,. 1 hour, 30 minutes, 15 minutes, etc.)

I hope that helps,

Richard

Just an addition for previous comment: I rely entirely on mysqueezebox.com to stream radio stations, Rhapsody, etc. I do not use Squeezebox software on my home computer. The streamed station I set for my alarm is streaming via My Favorites, on squeezebox.com (I presume... or perhaps the radio contacts the station directly over the Internet... but it's not through my home computer's software).
Comment 9 trinkner 2010-10-14 10:33:19 UTC
Not sure if anybody is reading this thread... the alarm issues were definitely not fixed in 7.5.1, and so far have not been fixed in the beta versions of 7.6 that I have tried, including up to 31421.

Key Problem: Although alarm does sound at proper time for me (5:00 am), it often stops playing after a brief while, requiring me to turn the station again. The device does not enter standby; it just stops playing.

I have occasionally gotten the alarm to work properly and to continue playing its stream as I would expect after it triggers. I can't seem to reproduce the behavior.

One clue might be that I have the alarm set as a MTuWThF alarm. On Monday it triggered correctly and continued playing until I turned it off. On Tu, W, and Th, it triggered correctly, but then ceased playing.

Here it the text from the support call incidents listed in comment 2 I think most of these are behaviors that have already been improved

Incident # 100520-002312

i HAVE TWO QUESTIONS:
- whwn the alarm clock starts at 06h20 am it seems aborting. The source of the sounds is internet radio, one of my favourites. Meaning it started but the sound is very low (despite my setting) and a few seconds later, it stopped with messaoge cannot connect. But this message is wrong as I the box was already connected. No other sound, so it is not safe as i may not hear it. What could be the problem . I swith on right away the raduio , it works.

Second question: is there a way to stop the alarm clock withoiut using the on/.off button. I did not find any inormation about that. So every time i push the button off and it disable my alram clock, despite the setting I have done by day. If i do not do another setting after, putting the alarm 1 to on, it will not ring.

Many thanks in advance for your investigation and help.

I have no problem of connection when i use the radion alon, so the alarm should work properly.

Cordially.

Richard

Hi randy,

I am still in the process of researching this issue, it appears to be a bug, but of a nature I have yet to identify. In the mean time I'd like you to make sure the time zone settings in your Account on Mysqueezebox.com matches what it should be.

Also make sure the alarm settings on Mysqueezebox.com match what you have set on the Radio.

You may also wish to reinstall the firmware, by going to Settings -> Advanced -> Software Update and asking it to reinstall the same firmware again.

Please update me if none of these options resolve the issue, and I will see if I can get more information from the Engineers about this possible bug.

Escalated - known bug?

Hi randy

I've been authorized by our Quality Assurance team to offer you our beta software, which may or may not fix our Alarm issues. Some of the fixes have not yet been worked into our servers at http://mysqueezebox.com however as soon as we have thoroughly tested the fixes they will be released.

The beta server software is located at http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.5

You will need to at least temporarily install this server software, and connect your Squeezebox to your computer, to have it update the Firmware. To connect to your computer, use the My Music option on the Home screen and choose to connect to the Server software on your computer.

Just try again anytime...when you called I was driving and could not take the call. I did get the message and my problem continues. The radio's still shut off "sometimes" after a few seconds of first turning them on and I gave up on the alarm but will try it again this weekend. I have 5 sq radio's and my inlaws have 3. They are still complaining about the alarm coming on with this anoying alarm and not the alarm sound they selected. I sell these radio's in the store I work at and had one come back with it
shutting off as well. I hope you will replace mine and my inlaws so we can get radio's that we can rely on and this will give me and my co-works a little more confidence in selling your radio's.

Dear Randy,

Thank you for your response. The fact that, that many radios are having an issue points away from a hardware issue. Would it be possible to get the MAC addresses from the Radio's in question? I may be able to check from our servers to see if there are issues from our side.

The MAC address is located on a sticker on the bottom of the Radio.

Closing bug for now. Support tickets list out-of-date firmware versions and some have been fixed.

There are open alarm issues with open bugs that are being addressed. Please either add onto those bugs or, if your problem hasn't been reported, create a new one for a specific issue. Open separate bugs for each issue.
