Description k24281 2010-01-11 13:53:36 UTC
The scanner ignores any files and files in folders that are containing special charachters (e.g. é, ß etc.)

As a result some 10% of my media files are not free :-(

Details of my system configuration:

* iTunes (Version: 9.0.2.25) running on Windows PC
* Squeezebox Server (Version: 7.4.1 - r28947 @ Tue Oct 20 08:02:44 PDT 2009)
  running on Synology Disk Station DS-110j
* Squeezebox Serverstatus states:
  OS: DiskStation (DSM Package Management) - DE - utf8
* Mediafiles are stored on Synology Disk Station (Firmware-Version DSM 2.2-0959)

If you are interested in me as a beta tester with this configuration please let me know.

Many thanks.

please attach a scanner.log file to this bug. Does it only happen with files imported from iTunes or with any folder you're trying to scan (disable iTunes to be sure)?

iTunes Music Library.xml
Comment 4 k24281 2010-01-12 12:17:48 UTC
Attached you find my scanner.log and my iTunes Music Library.xml after a fresh iTunes installation. The library consists of 55 titles. One of them has a special character in its filename (Test_ä.mp3).

Its index in the library is 129:

<key>129</key>
<dict>
<key>Track ID</key><integer>129</integer>
<key>Name</key><string>Testtitle with special character in filename</string>
...
<key>Location</key><string>file://localhost//Servus/Musik/Test/Test_%C3%A4/Test_%C3%A4.mp3</string>

In scanner.log you find

[10-01-12 20:53:37.4543] Slim::Plugin::iTunes::Importer::handleTrack (335) File not found: //Servus/Musik/Test/Test_ä/Test_ä.mp3

and

[10-01-12 20:53:56.2333] Slim::Plugin::iTunes::Importer::handleCharElement (602) NOT pushing 129 on to list, it's missing (or disabled).

The resulting array size is 54 (meaning that 1 of the 55 files is missing).

Scanner Logfile without iTunes enabled

If SC only scans the media folders (iTunes is disabled) the files with special characters aren't ignored - everything works well obviously.

Unfortunately we have a long history of issues importing iTunes files on Linux server. It's fine on most, but not all of them.

Would the files show up if you added the music folder too?

For the playlist scanning see also eg. bug 4578.
Comment 7 k24281 2010-01-28 08:11:35 UTC
Hi Michael,

NO, the files don't show up if I ADD the music folder.

If I add the music folder and disable iTunes media scan then the files show up. But this isn't the way I want to use SC.

Michael, I'm going to assign this to you although Andy is of course the scanner wizard. Please feel free to push back or bring it up in the bug meeting if you like.

I can't reproduce the case where enabling both a music folder and iTunes integration would make tracks disappear. If they're fine with the music folder alone, they don't vanish by enabling iTunes. Is this really what you're seeing?
Comment 10 k24281 2010-02-04 13:59:32 UTC
Hi Michael,

yes you're right. I tried it out again and in fact I can see the files if I add the music folder. Sorry for my mistake.

But unfortunately this seems to bring some other unwanted side effect, so it's still no acceptable solution for me.

What side effects?

Could you please tell me what side-effect you're seeing when using the music folder and iTunes integration?
Comment 14 Michael Herger 2010-02-10 06:38:09 UTC
This is a dupe of bug 4578: some text files containing file paths from Windows systems fail to parse on Linux systems (playlists, iTunes XML file etc.)

Since I rescanned the iTunes library with the music folder added I'm observing that there is some disorder in the content of my music library. Actually I'm not shure if this really has to do with having added the music folder:

1.) If one album consists of 2 CDs iTunes shows it as one album and plays the 2 CDs one after another. In SC I see AlbumName (Disk 1 von 2) and AlbumName (Disk 2 von 2).

2.) At one album (2 CDs) I find 10 (!) album entries with identical title.

Any hints about this?
