Description Doug Williams 2009-08-30 07:13:44 UTC
I'm not sure what category this should be in. OS seems to be too general - seems like there should be an upgrade category or something. I made it a major because it seems like any lockup/freeze should be of some higher severity level.

I have to connect to a different player to get prompted for the firmware upgrade (see previous bug 13770). The download and install portions work fine. The "Restarting" screen comes up and the progress bar moves from the left to right and then stops (all the way to the right). I've waited over 5 minutes for it to actually reboot and it never does.

Manually hitting the restart button on the back forces the reboot and the new version appears to have installed.

Of course it still won't connect as a player to either SN or SbS and play anything (previous bug - 13770).

Please don't preset targets. Thanks.

How consistent is this Doug?
Comment 3 Doug Williams 2009-09-01 04:56:03 UTC
To the best of my knowledge I didn't preset the target. The only change I made was to "major" (as I noted in the comments). Sorry if it somehow accidently got set somehow. I wouldn't intentionally have set it to 8 in any case because I'd be kind of hoping that it may get somehow corrected sooner... :)

So far it has been 100% reproducable. 3 or 4 updates. Just happened again this morning.

A question about version and router was asked on the other bug I files and referenced here. I'm thinking it was for this bug so I'm adding the information requested here also.

I have a Netgear wnr3500 router. I also have used netgrear wn802t wireless access point.

From memory I believe that I have one of the older units, but I've forgotten how to determine that by reading the numbers on the bottom.

M/N: x-rc4

On a side note: Since my other bug that I filed also ended up with a target of 8.0 and I hadn't changed any of the kind of info. over there either I decided to test and started creating a new bug. The default for a new fab4 bug appears to be 8.0 - at least when I create a bug anyway. Please correct this so that I don't have any new bugs I file automatically, inadvertently, and/or incorrectly targeted. Thanks!

For some reason QoS on this router doesn't treat our players well, could you disable that and try to reproduce?
Comment 6 Doug Williams 2009-10-02 21:31:30 UTC
I disabled the routers QOS, the AP didn't seem to have that feature - at least I couldn't find any control for it.

It didn't have any impact - it still hung on the restart screen after forcing an upgrade from the diag/software update screen.

Note: I also disabled the WMM (multi-media) setting as well - no effect either.
Comment 7 Doug Williams 2009-10-02 21:33:48 UTC
I've also tried both wired and wireless - same problem.
Comment 8 Ross Levine 2009-10-05 12:12:19 UTC
Very odd, thanks for testing. Could you try updating firmware via SD card or USB? This should help us separate if this is hardware or a networking issue.
Comment 9 Doug Williams 2009-10-05 12:43:51 UTC
Sure. Can you run through the steps again for doing that? Can I use a firmware file that the SbS has already downloaded? Can I use one that I've already upgraded to? Mainly, I need the what files on the SD card from where type of things.
Comment 10 Ross Levine 2009-10-06 14:33:01 UTC
Well seeing as how you're able to reproduce this consistently with every firmware, than any firmware should suffice for this test.

There should be a baby firmware file ProgramData/Squeezebox/Cache/updates. Just put that file on an SD card or USB stick and put them on Touch, then you should see an option to update from the card under software update. Does that work?
Comment 11 Doug Williams 2009-10-06 14:56:07 UTC
This is about a Touch, not a baby (tough to switch gears, isn't it? :)) OK, if I can use a firmware that is already installed then that should work fine. I'll just put it in the root directory on the SD card.

I'm waiting for someone else there to wipe this Touch completely out of your databases for a different bug 13770 so that I can restart and see if I can get it to play again. I think I have to wait until that is done before I do this.

Sorry, baby, fab4, and jive firmwares will all be in that cache directory.

Let us know how it goes.
Comment 13 Doug Williams 2009-10-07 06:25:00 UTC
I didn't get a chance to try the SD card tonight - I wanted to make sure not to mess up the server wipe scenario by using the unit at the wrong time, etc. That test failed, by the way. I'll test the SD card update tonight.

Also, it is now freezing and rebooting if I hit the power off button on the screen. The reason I'm mentioning it is that with all of its causes for reboots it seems like it will be difficult to get a good feel for this one.

Could there by something physically wrong with this one?

Probably. We've got a new one coming to you, hopefully you can help us determine if it is the hardware itself. In that case we'll want the bad one back to have our new hardware QA engineer perform an autopsy.
Comment 15 Doug Williams 2009-10-09 18:33:30 UTC
New hardware works!!!

A couple of hicups on the initial plug-in but when it installed the new update it rebooted perfectly.

Thanks!!!! Really missed it this past month or so.

I guess I'll leave this call open for the QA Eng.

How do you want the old one shipped?

By the way, if he/she/they don't need to destroy it in the research process I wouldn't mind getting it back again - I do have a place where I could make use of a controller only unit... Only if you guys don't have a need for it - just hate to see it tossed aside if someone has a use for it.
Comment 16 Ross Levine 2009-10-12 15:07:04 UTC
Doug you'll get an email from myself or Dane with shipping details shortly.

Thanks Doug!
