Description Mickey Gee 2009-08-28 15:25:30 UTC
When playing a track on a battery-only unit, it will turn itself off without much warning when the battery low condition is encountered.

With firmware 7307, the Please Charge Me screen is shown for approximately 12 seconds and then the auto shutoff occurs.

It would be preferable if some warning was given much earlier to allow the user to plug it into the wall for uninterrupted music.

Suggest the following sequence:

1. 10 minutes beforehand, the battery icon on the Now Playing or other screen displays a out-of-battery-charge state as an initial warning.
2. 1 minute beforehand, the Please Charge Me screen is displayed.
3. After 1 minute, the auto turn off process initiates.

Richard and Caleb, does Mickey's proposal sound reasonable?
Comment 2 Ross Levine 2009-08-31 18:15:32 UTC
Richard is there any variable power supply testing I can do to help here?
Comment 3 Ben Klaas 2009-09-05 06:33:30 UTC
initially assigning to Richard, but I could probably be on the hook for the UI level work for this.

With r7426, Baby will shut itself off without any warning. It will be playing a track and then suddenly the screen will go blank and music stops playing.

I can then power on the unit, and it will stay on for a little bit and then repeat the above. The battery icon at the bottom of the screen shows perhaps one-quarter filled. Maybe that icon should blink as a battery warning?

Bug #13761
Extended low battery warning to one minute.
Comment 6 Richard Titmuss 2009-09-07 05:46:20 UTC
I've extended the please charge me warning screen to 1 minute (from 30 seconds). It should work as Mickey suggests anyway (I'm not sure when the low battery state is shown, probably more than 10 minutes before hand).

This needs to be tested, and if it does not work then it's probably Calebs to fix.
Comment 7 Mickey Gee 2009-09-07 22:43:30 UTC
With r7438, there's no warning screen at all. The music is playing and it simply cuts off suddenly -- the screen blanks and there's a slight "thump" when it happens.

The battery icon on the bottom bar shows one-quarter full.

Sorry, no change to symptoms listed in Comment 7. PVT2 Baby with firmware r7576.

I've seen the Charge Me screen on some build recently. It was displayed for 45 seconds (it happened twice so I timed it the second time) before the display blanked suddenly.

Fixed 13761. Fixed shutoff logic so that it will display 'please charge me' before shutting down.
