Description Ben Klaas 2009-08-06 14:02:08 UTC
this will need to be addressed before release of 7.4

the new jive skin is extremely hard to see when viewed at an angle (e.g., when sitting in a cradle on a desk).

especially:
RGB 179 text (artist album on NP screen)
Selected item asset when using dark wallpaper

I don't think this is an issue at all when viewing on the desktop, but just got a build going on a controller today, and it's a problem.

Ben- Are you using the encore (teal) wallpaper? We are going to darken this wallpaper towards the top to provide more contrast.
Comment 2 Ben Klaas 2009-08-10 11:23:52 UTC
Noah, you need to get the new 7.4 jive firmware going on a controller, you'll immediately see the issue.

Yes, I'm using teal encore, but I think this is a more general problem with contrast in the new jive skin when viewed on the device.
Comment 3 ndijulio 2009-08-14 12:16:04 UTC
As seen with other devices this is more of a viewing angle (Hardware issue) than a contrast issue.

Ben- Is this filing primarily in response to the Now Playing screen?

Related: the selected item on a context menu is particularly difficult to see, at any viewing angle, since the cm background is black
Comment 5 Ben Klaas 2009-08-20 14:56:10 UTC
Noah and I discussed this and we both feel that it's not a P1 showstopper but will need to be addressed soon after 7.4.

Tom, on CM's I'm using the wrong selection box asset. It will be better once I point to the correct assets.
Comment 6 Ben Klaas 2009-08-26 07:53:46 UTC
this is an administrative shuffle on priority fields to help make better judgment on the top end of the priority list. P4->P5, P3->P4, and P2->P3.
Comment 7 Dan Evans 2009-09-08 10:34:47 UTC
I have not seen this yet, but I'm hearing that testers are complaining about this on the forums. I'll look for myself shortly.

If it's as obvious as it sounds, and as detrimental, I'd say this needs to be a P1 or P2. Not a P3. We can't ship firmware that will cause users to perceive their product as "broken".
Comment 8 ndijulio 2009-09-08 10:39:45 UTC
Daniel, Are you referring to the NP artist/album text font color or:

"Related: the selected item on a context menu is particularly difficult to see,
at any viewing angle, since the cm background is black."

Please clarify. If you are referring to the latter please open a separate bug against the context menu.

Things to keep in mind regarding addressing this issue as a P1:

Controller and Baby share graphical assets. What's being described here is a direct result of the new Baby skin, ergo the new Controller skin.

Decoupling Controller and Baby assets (and therefore creating a whole second set of assets) will not be able to be done by the burned-in deadline for Baby and 7.4 release. I also think it's a bad idea.

The other option is reworking the single set of assets for both skins to alleviate the viewing angle issue on controller. The tradeoff here is that baby's UI design will suffer. This is also likely not accomplishable by the deadline for Baby/7.4.

The upshot is that P1 = gates release. If this bug is made a P1 it would strongly put our release date in jeopardy.

Controller when viewed in the hand is not a problem. It's a problem with a downward viewing angle, e.g. sitting in a cradle and viewing while sitting at a desk.

Please assess the bug with the associated ramifications.

Dan, if you assess and feel it is a P1, the assignee after that should be Pat.

Okay, I got two Jives side by side to compare-- one with 7.3 and one with 7.4 and played the exact same album on both... honestly I can't tell the difference.

Unless I'm missing something I don't think this needs a priority change. Sorry for the noise before seeing in a RL comparison.

Dan, my main reason for bringing this to your attention is because I wanted the support team to be aware of it so they can try to separate HW failures from this issue and avoid unnecessary returns. I still think that would be a good idea, but I also agree that this is not a P1.

I'm convinced the controller screen has got a lot duller with 7.4. The screens on both my controllers now look very plain indeed.

For photo evidence see:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=465361

It'd be good it the brightnesss could be turned up *a lot* and the artwork rendering bug (a bug somewhere near here) could be addressed too.

It's almost embarrassing to post this as a bug as it's so basic and obvious.

Not clear what the directive is on this? Is this a hardware issue or a change that needs to be considered to the GUI (boost contrast on supporting text)?

Several changes have been made to the skin since this bug was filed. Most notably the wallpaper will no longer appear behind the titlebar alpha overlay. This alone should inc. the contrast dramatically.

Before I comment, what rev is this change?
Comment 16 ndijulio 2009-10-22 18:34:04 UTC
Not sure. It could be in the queue...

Ben, can you commit?
