Dean to suggest specifics. Pressing each of the 3 options gives a nice description, but it would be nice if there was slightly more information on this screen to clarify. For instance, it could be confusing to some the difference between "Use Pin Method" and "Enter Wireless Password".

Maybe they should read "Use WPS-Pin Method" and "Enter wireless encryption key".

The help screen does have a nice writeup, but that three-choice screen is a little intimidating, as Bobbykin pointed out.
Comment 2 James Richardson 2009-07-07 21:55:30 UTC
Changing target to next major milestone (since MPQ & MP have been reached already)
Comment 3 Blackketter Dean 2009-07-22 09:17:59 UTC
Moving to the product SqueezePlay because this bug appears to apply to any player based on that application code. Feel free to move it back if it's specific to the single original product.

Ross, any suggestions? It's a small screen, and explaining this is pretty complex.

All I can think of is the text that currently sits in the help screen:

"This network uses Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). Please consult the router manufacturer's instructions for connecting via WPS, or select "Enter WPA/WPS Password" to bypass WPS and enter a regular password."

Well there's always the suggestions I opened this bug with. :-)

When you attempt to connect to a router that features WPS, squeezeOS displays the "Choose WPS Login Method" screen, there is room for 5 lines after the header, and we're currently using 3, so there is more space. Because the 3 options are so brief and all traditional connection means are buried behind a not completely clear 3rd option, I see room for confusion.

Header: This access point features Wifi Protected Setup
Header2?: Choose the security connection method for your network
Option1: WPS push button configuration method to connect
Option2: WPS PIN method
Option3: Wireless encryption key (WEP or WPA)

As far as exact wording I had hoped your research would yield what terminology is preferable, I'll just go over the few points I've made that I think are significant.

1. We have space on this screen for more information, lets elaborate a little for clarity's sake. Lets clarify that the first 2 options are WPS, and the 3rd is not.
2. Say more than "Enter Wireless Password" for the 3rd option. "(WEP or WPA)" will probably help users who don't know what WPS is but are just looking for where to enter their WEP key is etc.
3. I think "push button configuration" is less confusing than "push button/PBC"

this is an administrative shuffle on priority fields to help make better judgment on the top end of the priority list. P4->P5, P3->P4, and P2->P3.

I like most of these suggestions quite a bit (though, Ross, the space we have isn't as much as you think - these strings have to be localized into really verbose languages like German and Russian, and some of our screens are smaller than others :-).

Let's do this:

Title: "Connect Using WPS"

Supporting text:

"This access point features Wifi Protected Setup (WPS). Please choose how you wish to connect:"

Options:

"WPS push button configuration method"
"WPS PIN method"
"Wireless encryption key (WEP or WPA)"

There is also a help screen available here with more information IIRC.

Not sure who to assign this to? Ben, please re-assingn in case I'm mistaken...

Only in English, and only on certain devices. This has to translate to languages like German and still work on our smallest screens.

Sounds great to me Sparky! Dan, sound good to you?
Comment 9 Dan Evans 2009-08-31 15:42:39 UTC
Much improved. Sounds good.

This fix was specifically asked for by Bobbykin both last month and in today's CXR meeting; it should have made it into 7.4. Retargeting as a P1 for 7.4.1.
Comment 11 James Richardson 2009-09-25 13:39:58 UTC
WPS is an 8.0 feature, not a 7.4 feature AFAIK
Comment 12 Ben Klaas 2009-09-29 11:50:48 UTC
Weldon- just double-checking. Note that two of these strings are now longer (- represents old string, + represents new string). These are very long even in EN on controller. Can you confirm these are what you want?

Also note these are only EN changes and all langs will not be translated until likely after 7.4.1

- EN Choose WPS Login Method
+ EN Connect Using WPS

- EN Use Push Button/PBC Method
+ EN WPS push button configuration method

- EN Use PIN Method
+ EN WPS PIN method

- EN Enter Wireless Password
+ EN Wireless encryption key (WEP or WPA)

- EN This network uses Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). Please consult the router manufacturer's instructions for connecting via WPS, or select "Enter WPA/WPS Password" to bypass WPS and enter a regular password.

Ben has a good point, more thinking needs to be done on this...
Comment 14 Ross Levine 2009-10-05 18:21:44 UTC
Too verbose then? Weldon come by sometime lets bounce a few ideas on how to cut the fat and still convey these options clearly.

Moving Matt Weldon bugs
Comment 16 Felix Mueller 2010-02-03 01:09:59 UTC
Note 1: In the past we also discussed the idea of removing the WPS pin option. Removing this kind of confusing option (the WPS pin needs to be entered into the wireless router and not into our device.) probably would make life easier for many customers. Also WPS pin only is mandatory if we want to do the official WPS certification.

Note 2: SB Controller also is WPS capable but WPS is currently disabled. See bug 13719.
Comment 17 Walker LaRon 2010-02-18 14:33:36 UTC
Hello All,

I have been testing FAB4 with WPS, and it seems to be more stable than before. I feel that from a customers perspective, we should remove the WPS PIN option from the menu, as I believe that this may confuse most customers. This option is NOT set by default in most routers, however the Push button method is on by default, or invoked when the button is pushed on the router.

Also, using this method even if configured properly in the router requires extra steps that can make customer experience bad. (e.g. here is the PIN, go Log into your router, find the WPS settings in the router, and enter the PIN there, etc..)

Thanks,

LaRon
Comment 18 Chris Owens 2010-02-22 09:45:15 UTC
Felix to remove the option. Note this will have to be reinstated if we ever want to get Wifi Logo certification.
