Description Dan Evans 2009-03-24 11:48:22 UTC
It is tricky to figure out which item is selected when I'm using the remote to scroll up and down in Setup. I can see it if I look closely, but a couple feet further away and it's difficult.

this observed using r4875

This is what I'm saying in bug 11187.

I recently noticed that the problem has a lot to due with the limited viewing angle of the screen. Even with my eye just 48" from the screen, if I'm a little too low, all I can see is the upper part of the highlight, which looks like little more than a bright line. Using a gradient is a poor choice for selection highlighting given the screen's limited viewing angle.

Dan- is this still an issue?
Comment 5 Jim McAtee 2009-07-15 16:02:32 UTC
Nothing has been changed, so..... Yes (?)
Comment 6 Dan Evans 2009-07-15 16:19:16 UTC
I'd have to agree: it's still ambiguous.

The worst case is when you have a list of items and you have the top item selected. The gradient from grey to black starts at the top of the item and it doesn't really read as a selection-- it could just be the background.

It's slightly better if the selected item is in the middle or bottom of the screen, but not by much.

Are you experiencing this on any other wallpapers besides Harmony and Sonata?

Comparison 3 diff. treatments

General Notes - We can modulate the following:

1. Selection bar - lighten color of gradient or add contrast by adding divider line

2. Text - change size or color to add emphasis

3. Background wallpaper - lighten wallpaper to inc. contrast with selection bar
Comment 9 Jim McAtee 2009-07-15 18:42:51 UTC
Of the three examples depicted in the attachment:

1. I see no difference.
2. Could be worse than the original.
3. Not likely to make any practical difference.

Can't you just lose the 3D treatment? If you must have 3D, can the top and bottom of the background be uniformly shaded? Lighting from above and below, but equally so.

Matt/Dean -can we prioritize this with respect to our current deadlines? If we are going to make any changes we need to do so yesterday:) A simple conversation could resolve everyone's complaints.

I was browsing wallpapers today from 10 feet away, and there are several of them that just look solid black or gray at that distance. I did find that navigation was a lot better using a lighter wallpaper, but I agree it needs to be improved a LOT for dark backgrounds. Also, whatever the little icons are on the right of what is selected--they are too small and indistinguishable.

Moving to the product SqueezePlay because this bug appears to apply to any player based on that application code. Feel free to move it back if it's specific to the original product.

This is MUCH more of an issue on fab4, and actually has a lot more to do with the viewing angle (a hardware issue) than the specific treatment here.

There are other constraints involved here too that haven't been discussed - for example, every type of wallpaper has to be supported here, from white to black, and everything else in between. So simply reversing the color scheme here, or simply removing the 3-D background, isn't feasible.

Retargeting for 8.0 since is is much less of an issue on non-fab4 Squeezeplay interfaces.
Comment 15 Jim McAtee 2009-08-10 14:52:10 UTC
I recently noticed that it's _much_ better now on Fab4 in the 10' interface. The 3D/shading is now uniform on the top and bottom, so it's less likely to be confused. Viewing angle is definitely a big factor, but it's much more of a factor for transparent shadings like this. The current highlighting is very good when viewed from near the ideal viewing angle, but some other type of treatment, maybe be less susceptible to viewing angle.

Something that may help would be to put a one or two pixel solid color line at the top and bottom of the highlight area. Something subtle, maybe even the teal color. Then, if you can't see the gradient background very well, you'll see the two thin lines and know that anything within the boundary is the selected item.

The menu selection box has been updated and check'd in to SVN. We have made the following adjustments:

1. Decreased the transparency of the "bar"

2. Added a white rule line to the bottom of the bar to further define the edge on dark backgrounds

3. Revised the gradient to off-white >black >off black creating the net effect is the bar appear lit from above and below.

The majority of the issue is due to a Hardware viewing angle constraint that cannot be fixed. Moving to resolved. If the issue persists please feel free to reopen.
