Bugzilla – Bug 11309
7.3 servers cache knowledge of Fab4s and confuse them with empty firmware update screens.
Last modified: 2009-09-08 09:27:34 UTC
got stuck in infinite loop of software update "1 of 0" - device advanced to this screen after tried to connect to old version of SC factory reset failed to return device to a state where this infinite loop could be avoided
Which factory reset? I've noticed that the factory reset from the menu and the press-hold of the little button seem to do different things. The button seems to *really* do a factory reset.
This is the issue you looked at yesterday, right Ben?
I worked with Ben on this one. The initial problem as I understand it is that fab4 attempts to connect to 7.3 at all. When fab4 does this fab4 gets in this stuck firmware update state since no firmware is actually available from 7.3. Doing a factory reset on fab4 at this point does not prevent the 7.3 server that is still running on the network to forget the player and results in fab4 being pulled to that server once fab4 is back on the same network and thus being back at the stuck firmware update screen. So the solution for Matthew was to turn off his 7.3 server or connect to a different network and associate his fab4 with a 7.4 server or SqueezeNetwork. So I guess the real bug here is that fab4 should only show and connect to SC 7.4 or higher.
(In reply to comment #3) > So I guess the real bug here is that fab4 should only show and connect to SC > 7.4 or higher. I don't understand why the same sort of server verification that was done with Boom hasn't also been implemented on Fab4. Insist on the server version being >= 7.4 and display a message that the server needs to be upgraded, and never connect to any < 7.4 server. But one other thing that also needs to be looked at is the stickiness of the Fab4 in connecting to the same server that it was previously connected to. SB2/3 are excellent at this and never automatically connect to a different server, even if the last one they were connected to is shut down and there are other SC servers on the network. The same behavior should be implemented on Fab4.
