Description jason 2009-02-08 17:34:05 UTC
When powering on (once for an alarm, once manually to play some music) the Boom just produced a fairly high pitched 'buzz' (not a pure tone). The only way to fix the problem was to pull the power and repower

Boom uses SN (v7.3.2)

Entering network setup and stepping through again removes the tone without pulling the power. Also experienced once with SB3.

Jason: is this problem reproducible or did it happen just one time?

If you can repo it, please give us the steps here, so we can investigate the issue further.

Comment 3 jason 2009-02-10 10:57:45 UTC
Sorry I don't have any way of reproducing it (yet). There are quite a few useful comments in the forum thread though http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=59866
Comment 4 Nigel Birch 2009-02-18 14:45:01 UTC
I've seen this regularly, typically when:

1. Press power to power on Boom/wake server via WoL.
2. Press preset button 5 to play Classic FM.
3. Buzzes of left speaker only.
4. Powering off with front button stops buzzing.
5. Powering on with front button starts buzzing.
6. Playing BBC Radio 1 (via Alien BBC) or a local FLAC track stops buzzing.
7. Press preset button 5 to play Classic FM now works.

It seemed to start after firmware v42 onwards (bug https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7681). I've rolled back to v41 and its been fine for a few days. At some stage I'll go forward to the latest to make sure it's some link that I'm making up.
Comment 5 James Richardson 2009-02-18 15:07:00 UTC
Felix: your thoughts on this? I have seen this only one time in QA, when the boom had been left in sleep state for 3 days, then woken to play content.

A reboot of the device cleared up the 'buzzing' sound
Comment 6 Felix Mueller 2009-02-19 00:43:42 UTC
Hmm, strange. It has not happened here, but then I am not using my Boom too often.

Do we already know if the buzzing is one of the internal test tones or something different?

Any reproducible ways that fail all the time?

If, as reported, it started with fw 42 it could be related to the fact that we now turn on/off the amplifier.

Caleb: Do you know if turning on the amplifier needs additional steps, like reconfiguring some settings in the amp? Could they be lost in some cases when turned off?
Comment 7 Nigel Birch 2009-02-21 23:41:59 UTC
Futher to comment 4, I updated to firmware v44 yesterday and this morning the Boom buzzed (same behaviour as before). Powering off also fixes it.

Waking up and playing BBC Radio 1 or local music doesn't give buzzing. ClassicFM is ASX, BBC Radio 1 is Real and local files are FLAC. I'm not sure if this media-related behaviour is a cause or effect (or not related!)...
Comment 8 Mads Andrup Pedersen 2009-03-06 06:32:59 UTC
I have also seen this bug on my Boom after switching from SC 7.3.1 to 7.3.2.

This happens when:
1. Press power to power on Boom/wake server via WoL.
2. Press preset button 3 to play P3 Radio (Danish broadcasting in .asx format)
3. Boom just buzzes
4. Powering off with front button stops buzzing.
5. Powering on with front button starts buzzing.
6. Playing a local FLAC track stops buzzing.
7. Press preset button 3 to play P3 Radio now works.

Putting the SC server to sleep and stating over with the steps, everything works normal.
Comment 9 Chris Owens 2009-03-16 09:51:19 UTC
We are now planning to make a 7.3.3 release. Please review your bugs (all marked open against 7.3.3) to see if they can be fixed in the next few weeks, or if they should be retargeted for 7.4 or future.

Thanks!
Comment 10 Felix Mueller 2009-03-26 09:34:39 UTC
I have retried the proposed steps many times but was unable to reproduce this.

Punting to next release.

Comment 12 James Richardson 2009-03-30 08:41:05 UTC
Felix: take a look at bug 11552, that has steps to reproduce the issue. I tested it here, but could not hear the buzz on my boom with r43. Maybe you can try those stops to see if you can reproduce it.
Comment 13 Mads Andrup Pedersen 2009-03-30 11:42:16 UTC
My Boom have this behavior every morning (SC 7.3.2 Boom Firmware 43). And for me it is no problem to reproduce it. I have noticed the SC server must be in suspend for a while, before wake-on-lan to show this bug. And it only happens when starting to play something in .asx format.
In my setup the SC server is put into suspend at 9:00pm, and at 3:00am it starts to do a small backup job. After finishing the backup job (At around 3:03am) it is again putted into suspend. In the morning turning on the Boom at around 7:30am, the noise is back for sure.
I have just tried the the wake-on-lan after only 1 hour and that did also reproduce the bug.

Comment 15 Ken 2009-04-20 15:59:35 UTC
[My original comments seemed to disappear when I added the attachment, so my apologies if the comments are duplicated.]

The buzz finally came back to my Boom this morning. Last night I had put my SC server in suspend and not switched the Boom over to SN, so it wasn't connected to any server overnight. This morning I pressed the power button on the remote, which woke up the server. Then I pressed the power button again to turn on the Boom, and I got the buzz. I recorded it this afternoon with the voice recorder mic on my Sansa and the sample is in the attached file.

I also managed to stop the buzz without rebooting the Boom. First I tried playing an internet radio station, but that just overlaid the buzz with a high pitched hissing sound. Then I played a track from my local library, the buzz stopped.

Other basic info:
Boom firmware: 45
SC: 7.4 (26054)
OS: Ubuntu 8.10
Boom network connection: wireless via Linksys WRT54GL
Comment 16 Ken 2009-04-23 08:34:49 UTC
Got the buzz again today, same overlaid hissing sound when I went to WAMU, but able to kill the buzzing when I switched to Radio Paradise. I'm not sure, but I think that the WAMU stream is WMA and Radio Paradise is MP3. I'll try to remember to confirm and report back.

Several of the comments above mention replicating the buzz with WMA streams. In my case though, the buzz starts as soon as I turn the Boom on, and before I'm streaming anything (and it's not set to resume playing at power on). The WMA stream only adds the hiss to the buzz.

QA to come up with reliable repro instructions (or at least show caleb)

Boom buzzing recording

I turned on my Boom this morning for some music while doing the dishes, and guess what? I don't have a good microphone at home, but this sounds like probably a square wave to me or a "pulse train" at a frequency of no more than 200 hz.

It is interesting that it sounds like my recording has a different fundamental frequency than the previous recording, but not by much.

The sound gets louder and softer with the volume buttons, and is not affected by changing the line-in level.

I'm running firmware 45.
Comment 19 Jesper Musaeus 2009-05-04 11:24:24 UTC
Hi,

I had this problem over a short period of time but haven't had it for a while, perhaps since I upgraded to 7.3.3.

But in my case it didn't sound at all like the two samples provided in the attachments. It sounded more like the sound provided in SC "Stream & birds" (sound & effect, natural sounds) just without the birds and a little more high pitched. I would call it "white noise"

When I got the noise it was exactly like described by Mads in comment #8, apart from the fact that my local files are WMA lossless.
Comment 20 Felix Mueller 2009-05-05 12:57:24 UTC
I've tried (several times) the method mentioned in comment #12 involving waking a sleeping server via WOL, but never got my SBB to buzz. SBB fw r45
Comment 21 Felix Mueller 2009-05-05 13:24:39 UTC
As mentioned by Dean I also tried rebooting the AP SBB is connected to in conjunction with waking the server SC is running on, but still no buzz. :(
Comment 22 Andy Norman 2009-05-05 15:27:37 UTC
I have also had the same buzzing on one of my Booms on a couple of occasions. I do not use WOL and my SC server never sleeps.

The Boom in question often goes unused for a couple of days at a time, with the power still connected. I _think_ the two times it happened were after it had been unused for several days, though I can't be 100% sure about that.

Like the other reports the buzzing started when I powered on to wake the Boom (_probably_ by pressing a preset button). I had to power it off to stop the buzzing.
Comment 23 Andy Norman 2009-05-05 15:29:24 UTC
I should also have said that I almost never use SN directly (the buzzing happened while using SC) and that the buzzing happened when using SC 7.3.2
Comment 24 dave p 2009-05-13 01:08:00 UTC
I got this last night.

Pressed my "4" preset on my kitchen unit and annoying buzzing sound from left speaker (kind of like a saw wave).

Had to turn off/on at wall to get rid of it.

Not having much luck with my Booms at the moment ...

firmware = 45
SN (never SC)
wireless network (O2 II Wireless Router)
Comment 25 benlen 2009-05-15 01:05:46 UTC
I think I atleast have found a reliable way of fixing the problem without pulling the power plug. By playing a MP3 song the buzzing disappear.
I usualy get the buzzing on with radio mms://straumr.nrk.no/nrk_radio_p3_h
Comment 26 James Richardson 2009-05-18 09:10:40 UTC
Fexlix thinks this may be related to turning the amplifier off, then back on. Or could be related to the ABTester, anything that reprograms the DSP.
Comment 27 Mads Andrup Pedersen 2009-05-20 23:53:48 UTC
After upgrading to SC 7.3.3 - 26488 to get rid of bug #10325 I haven't had the buzzing noise on my Boom as written in Comment #8.
Comment 28 SDi 2009-05-25 10:50:46 UTC
I have had the buzzing twice now. Both times it involved SqueezeNetwork.

Normally I am only running SC 7.3.2, but after I got the Boom I decided to get a SN account so I was able to hear my favorite local radiostations without powering up my server with SC.

First time buzz:
After I setup the SN account and connected it all worked fine, but before turning off I selected SC on Boom.
Next day I powered up SC and pressed a preset and the buzzing started. I can't exactly remember how I got rid of it, but I did not unplug power. I think I changed to SN and then back to SC, but not sure.
Next day I had not been connected to SN and no buzz.

Second time buzz:
SC was selected on Boom. Pressing a preset for favorite, but I had not powered up SC. Selected then SN, but music was extremely distorted on all presets - quite disappointing. I then powered up my SC and selected SC on Boom - buzz started.
I had to power off Boom to get rid of it.

Bug 9262 may be related to this issue, please mark as duplicate if it is
Comment 30 James 2009-06-02 19:06:41 UTC
I had the buzzing on monday, running V45, connected to squeezenetwork. To stop the buzzing I didn't have to reboot it.

The sequence of events is below:

The unit may not have been used for three days. When the alarm went off, got the buzzing from the left speaker.

Pressed the preset for the station that was supposed to be playing:
Display read 'buffering' and buffered upto 100%. No change in buzzing.

Tried to select a different station preset - the display did the 'buffering' thing to 10)% and the station started playing fine (buzz stopped).

Then, selected the original station preset - and it buffered up and and played OK.
Comment 31 Caleb Crome 2009-09-22 09:01:13 UTC
I haven't heard any complaints about this lately. I don't think this is mine anyway -- seems like a ip3k issue, not a dsp issue.
Comment 32 James Richardson 2009-09-22 14:05:10 UTC
Is anyone on this bug still able to reproduce this issue?
Comment 33 Mads Andrup Pedersen 2009-09-22 14:28:04 UTC
I haven't seen this problem since upgrading to 7.3.3 see Comment 27. But with 7.3.2 the problem occurred nearly every day. So for me the problem is solved.
Comment 34 jason 2009-09-23 04:32:24 UTC
I haven't had this issue in the last 3 months and am currently running 7.3.3
Comment 35 James Richardson 2009-09-23 14:20:45 UTC
Marking this as fixed for now. If after upgrading t 7.3.3 or 7.4 you still experience this issue, feel free to reopen the bug and add more details on how to reproduce.

We need clear instructions on how to reproduce reliability please

Please reopen the bug. I've gotten the buzzing twice in the past week on firmware 50 (SBS 7.4.2). Stopped the buzz using the same workaround as Comment #15.

This time there was no local server suspend or anything. For some reason the connection to my local SBS was dropped, so all the button lights were illuminated even though Boom was off.
Comment 38 erik 2011-07-18 03:12:34 UTC
Please reopen bug. I still get this occasionally on my Squeezebox Boom (never on my Radio). I'm running against Squeezenetworks. I have no local squeezeserver.
