Description vagskal 2009-01-19 11:07:36 UTC
A change of language in the SC web UI temporarily stops the playback of music.

Also a rescan temporarily stops the playback of music (but I thought there was a bug report for that one already although I cannot find it at the moment).

QA to investigate language selector bug

Rescanning covered under bug 7232

Can you explain the "temporarily' part of your bug report?

What is the source of your audio playback when you did the language change?
What device were you streaming too?

Sorry for being incomplete and not finding Bug# 7232.

By temporarily I mean that the playback is stopped (often in the middle of a song) for some seconds, 10-15 maybe.

I play FLAC and MP3 files (not internet streams), but I cannot remember if it was FLAC or MP3 that was playing at the time - I can test with both if you want me to.

I was at the time playing the files, stored on the same PC as SC is running on, to my SB3 (FW 123) hardwired to the router (no wireless connection was involved in the playback and the player was not at the time synced to any other player). If you want me to I can test with my SBR and Boom, both using wireless connection.

After reading bug# 7232 which seems to concern only a wipe and rescan, I just wanted the point out that what I meant by "rescan" is only a scan for new or changed music. The interruption in playback occurs at the end of the scan (in connection with some of the database cleaning/optimizing operations). The interruption is of longer duration than in connection with the language switch, over one minute as far as I can recall.

The conditions when this occurs are the same as stated in Comment# 2.

(I can understand if there must be an interruption if the whole database, including the track playing, is rebuilt and I seldom do this since it takes some 4+ hours. But I do not think that a scan for new or changed music should stop playback, at least not unless the track playing has been changed, which has not been the case when the playback has stopped for me during a scan for new or changed music.)

We are now planning to make a 7.3.3 release. Please review your bugs (all marked open against 7.3.3) to see if they can be fixed in the next few weeks, or if they should be retargeted for 7.4 or future.

Thanks!

Is this really a hassle for you? It would need a lot of database work to fix this, or a rearchitecture.

I just want to understand why you change your language :)

Thanks for any info!

The immediate reason for the change of language I needed to do can be found in this fix : https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10114#c8

Otherwise, I have only occasionally changed language to be able to see the correct terminology when reporting a bug or commenting something in the forums.

So the answer would be: No, it is no real hassle that playback is temporarily stopped when changing language.

What is a hassle, however, is that a rescan (not a wipe and rescan, just a scan for new or changed music) will also temporarily stop playback. I frequently add new music or correct tags with a subsequent rescan.

We're surprised that you're seeing rescanning stop playback on a system that seems to be relatively powerful.

How long is the stop you're seeing?

While rescanning the stop of playback is well over a minute (several minutes even). The stop occurs when on some of the last database cleaning operations. The playback continues then automatically from where it stopped.

I am now on version 7.3.3 - 25911 @ Sat Apr 11 04:07:38 PDT 2009 and the issue persists.

Hi,

I just did a playlists only scan, although I do not have any playlists with music files, and I wanted to let you know that even this limited rescan stopped the playback of music.

Andy, I guess that this is fixed with the combination of my changes to add idleStreams calls and the removal of changes to DB table collation order upon language change.
Comment 11 vagskal 2009-10-02 00:19:34 UTC
I upgraded to 7.4.1 - r28693 and did this test again.

"I just did a playlists only scan, although I do not have any playlists with
music files, and I wanted to let you know that even this limited rescan stopped
the playback of music."

The result was the same.

With 7.4.2 r29220 a change of language in SBS still stopped playback (compare as to the reason for changing language https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13600#c56).

Playback also stops like before when doing a scan for new or changed music.
Comment 13 vagskal 2010-01-04 11:23:37 UTC
Just wanted to let you know that this rather recent bug https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15116 requires me to change language in SBS from Swedish to English to get muso to be able to import new information from SBS and to, thereafter, switch back from English to Swedish in SBS (to get inter alia correct sorting for "Swedish" characters). The inconvenience of having SBS stop playback also upon a change of language (and not only on a scan for new music) is thus graver for me than before.

Unassigned bugs cannot have a priority.
