Bugzilla – Bug 9896
Line-In Behavior with Boom Powered Down
Last modified: 2010-05-07 23:41:21 UTC
Trying to use the Boom as my normal PC speakers. I have Line-In set to always on, and volume set to 100 in the Boom Settings (SC 7.2.1). When the Boom is powered off, the PC speakers continue to play through the device -- which I think is the intended behavior. But if I play anything through SqueezeCenter and subsequently power off the Boom, the PC speakers stop working. I can reset the behavior by 1) clearing the playlist; 2) removing and re-inserting the plug in the Line In connector; 3) clearing the playlist again (because Line In became the only item on it when I reconnected). At this point, PC speakers play with the Boom on or off. It's not clear to me how it's supposed to work, but it would be great (from my perspective) if the speakers were always active for Line In, even when the Boom is powered down.
Verified. Power Cycle boom and Line-In no longer functions with out plug detection taking place. I.E. unplug - replug line in.
Felix to investigate, it's possible that this behavior is due to the speaker hiss when off issue.
Changing target to next release
Related to this issue, if Line-In is already active and the server is restarted, plugging in the line-in jack again adds a new line-in item to the playlist. In this case, 1 of 2 makes no sense.
Punting to next release
I believe this is fixed in 7.4 with fw 50. Please reopen this bug, if you still can reproduce.

Hmm, I don't understand, why would you want line-in to produce sound if you power your Boom off? Isn't powering off meant to stop the sound? Am I missing something here?
BTW: Always on means the internal speakers stay on even if something is plugged into the headphone out, but only if Boom is actually turned on.
Per the first comment in this bug report, to use the Boom as an alternative to a separate set of computer speakers then having line in active even when the Boom is "off" is desirable i.e. you are using your computer and want to hear the sounds from it but you don't want to listen to anything else on the Boom.
Ok, I see, thanks for clarifications, reopening and retargeting.
