invaluable in keeping all of the computers/browsers in sync.  As it is, they are too subject to random removals and cleanups.

The effect of using a cookie is that it becomes an individual user setting instead of a server-wide setting.  I think that it should probably remain an individual setting since it's a user interface customization.

But when user profiles are implemented (8.0, maybe?) I would hope that most or all of the cookie based web ui settings go away in favor of server side user profile options.  For exactly the reason stated - so that a user can move between machines and not have to configure all the little cookie based interface options all over again.
